Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
WAIT.... STK has offered Ross a contract?
Bad move, really bad move.
We need to move him on, with no comparable contract to stay... let the dude go and have a great career with GCS withy Luke Dunstan, and just take the compensation
Why are we offering these guys contracts at all - why do we want him remaining on our list?

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
Answering Qs with Qs. Yes annoying but its lockdown, everyone is annoying.
So who is Seb keeping out of the team that is so special. Or is ageism/bold quest for new bright unicorns the recruitment drivers in the bored off season?
Do we have better knocking down the doors; waiting in the wings, or are we rehashing Pelchen's idea that any random change is good and a sign of mystical vision, when really its not, can be just poor asset management. (Ans. can't think of anyone but possibly Gallagher has a target in mind so is a bit blasé about our Seb or is still cross about the Adelaide game and all the revenue it cost).
Don't get the level of anti Seb vibe here, are we easily bored with players? He seems an honest toiler, imperfect but even Dangerfield has absolute shockers and Buddy misses final winning set shots.
Is Seb a symbol of our frustration through no real fault of his own? Seeing so many threads on here headed up with the names of other teams players rather than a direct Saints theme might look a bit sad to other Clubs' supporters - not Carlton's of course. Or possibly Collingwood's. Their supporters seem even more insecure than us.

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
The simple fact of the matter here, and with Billings, is that they've come out of contract at the right time.
If we'd improved on 2020 and Ross & Billings had been regular Best 22, they'd be well within their rights to ask for a new contract with a pay increase, their external value would also be up. As it is, we had an average 2021 and while both players were servicable, they didn't improve, thus both their internal and external value is lower than it was 12 months ago. St Kilda is then in the perfect position to offer them what the club sees fit, well knowing they're unlikely to receive a better offer elsewhere.
End of the day, their value to St Kilda is more than their market value at the end of 2021. In an improved 2022 St Kilda side, they'll either rise to the level or provide excellent, experienced depth.

What do Seb, Dunny, Billings and Battle have in common.
They are four of the five most maligned and denigrated players on the St Kilda list.
Lonie is the 5th and likely to be de-listed.
Billings seems reluctant to sign on again.
Seb and Battle are said to be testing the waters even though Seb has a contract offer on the table and Battle has a year to run on his, while Dunny was initially offered a one year deal but mutually with the club decided to "move on".
Coincidence, or an unpleasant reality? Unpalatable for some but likely to be a factor.

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
Maligned by who? This forum!? Facebook?
Why does that matter?
Purely based on appearances, the club have treated Seb very well over his stint.
I’m sure he has been paid fairly if not better to date, don’t recall him ever being dropped… don’t recall any of his coaches ever publicly blasting him or his effort… he’s been in the leadership group, vice captain, won B&Fs etc
I don’t see any indication that he’s maligned at all.
After ten years or thereabouts he’s apparently unhappy with the contract on the table and is testing the waters which is completely his prerogative
Like I said somewhere else, the market will determine his value
If he deserves more, he’ll get it either with us or elsewhere otherwise the current offer is what they’re willing to pay him
This weird perception that somehow the opinions of all us nobodies on social media are somehow effecting the internal machinations at the club are just bizarre
How powerful do some people think they are
If Seb Ross is genuinely offended and considering leaving because someone named skeptic and another person named The Dud, don’t rate him as highly as other forumites named B.M and Saynta at a forum called Saintsational…
Then he’s an idiot
But of course he’s not, and he doesn’t. I’d be shocked if he’s ever even read this page
All of this means nothing. It’s just a hobbie for the diehards

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
Think he is important within the team structure and appears willing to adapt his role to what the side needs. Benefited from longer games this year with endurance.
Surprised that GC isn't looking at him - they lack leadership, need help for the younger guys in the inside . Freo could be another as Brayshaw gets smashed and still only young.
Gut says he and Billings will stay. Lonie gone , Battle expendable for the right price.

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
I could get the maligned bit
If he’d achieved little (like Dunstan)
But he’s been very good, at his best excellent
Even just his 2017 where he averaged 30 and made the AA squad should be respected.
But no, for some reason HE is the reason we were average - even though his performances were good, and the rest were mostly s***?!!
But hey,
If it makes you feel better, and feel as if you know better… knock yourself out
And continue to bag him!!!

A great servant of the club, he was just out of his depth playing our main mid role, in comparison with the mids, who were actually picked as AA best 22 while he was a having a purple patch.
I hope he picks up a nice little retirement package, either here or elsewhere. He won't rocket us to a premiership but he would get a game and contribute effectively. No where near the dizzy heights he was once at, but he is better now anyway.

However, consider the following:
My boss comes to me and says - we have been paying your $60.00 an hour - here is a contract for $30.00 an hour - is that showing that I am appreciated internally or part of their future plans?
Absolutely not - so I have a right to 'Test the Market'
If they come to me and say the reverse - I grab the contract before the ink is dry
Which scenario reminds you of Seb's situation?
Thanks Seb for your past performances - if the Club does not think you will be in the photo with the Cup - feel free to look elsewhere
If you do not find anywhere else - then the door is still open (atm)

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
So out of interest, is there an argument to be made that the extremely passionate support of Ross from BM and Saynta makes Seb…
Possibly the most respected and beyond reproach player St.Kilda has ever seen.
I mean… what other player on the list or in recent history has dedicated forumites frequently talk then up and buff away any criticism ever directed at them.
Rather than be considered maligned as stated based on reflections here… surely it’s equally plausible that based on the response, the club thinks that Ross is ONE THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME
Seems to me that both of these scenarios have to exist in the same universe

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
Good decision the market can be more generous than any football contract.
The market is up today by around 0.42%.
But you need to look at individual companies.
Some have much better futures than others.
Plus you need to buy the best of best when the market offers them more cheaply than it should, hold for years and sell them when the market is generous.

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
I don’t mind players getting bagged - justifiably
They’re pro athletes
But to carry on like he’s done nothing and is poor is ludicrous
He made the AA squad FFS
On any given weekend there are 5 x 18 (90) Mids running around in the AFL
There are about 16-20 Mids picked in the AA squad of 40
That means over a season he was rated in the top 15-20% of Mids in the AFL
Not bad for an average footballer
This carry on about being better off without him, and we’d be better off with Byrnes or Bytel next season. FFS Seb has 40 odd Brownlow votes, so judged in the best 3 on the ground many times
The other two have barely made the StK best players list
They may develop, but who’s to say either will ever be as good as Seb because both are a long way from it now.

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
Ok. Seb was a superstar, for 50 weeks. We got ripped off with 12 other players, several players never performed, our coach was a dud and if it wasn't for Steven, he'd probably have 5 TBA's and a couple of brownlows. We should have won a flag while he Geary, Dunstan, Hickey, Longer and Max Weller were at their peak powers. Sounds about right!saynta wrote: ↑Tue 31 Aug 2021 6:51pmThe worst comments afaiwc, were those that denigrated or downplayed his Trevor Barker medals by saying he was just playing in poor sides. f****** insulting rubbishB.M wrote: ↑Tue 31 Aug 2021 6:45pm I don’t mind players getting bagged - justifiably

Anyway BM arguing with the ignorant only brings you down to their level.

Re: Seb's manager apparently testing the market
I forgot Newnes. Another gun we wasted and underestimated.
