Re: Hayden McLean
Have you seen him play?
I watched Tom Lynch at Sandy in 2009/10
He was excellent and it was no surprise he turned out a good player.
Watched half a dozen Sandy games this year and obviously took a lot of notice of our highest DP last season
He looked out of his depth and really struggled
If you research his U18 numbers, they are not great and I’m struggling to understand what they saw in him?!
He is young, and he may well develop but early signs aren’t good
Do you find it interesting that
1/ we took basically the same type of player in the mid season draft?
2/ that play was quickly flown to Sydney without even training to be an emergency whilst Allison was not considered?
3/ that a kid playing SANFL reserves 3 months ago only stated AFL training mid season made a debut before Allison.
Allison has a long way to go

Re: Hayden McLean
Didn't Hayden play a blinder for the Swans this year - remember thinking, Swans produce good forwards like WIndies used to produce fast bowlers.
If Tim is going to be more of a swing man at each 15 minute mark and defences set up to double/triple team Max he could be just the ticket. Doubt Swans will let him go easily though.
Can't be skeptical of Matthew, slip of a boy that someone sees promise in. Might be a refreshing way to bring in talent rather that going to VFL e-bay as we have tended to do. With some TLC and new assistants lets see how Matthew develops. Debut mid 2022?

Re: Hayden McLean
Yeah, wow. Give the kid a f****** break. Be f****** terrible if someone gave him a tiny bit of encouragement.
Lucky for the kid the club does by naming him on an extended bench.

Re: Hayden McLean
I was being serious
Outside of Sal - who I don’t consider on the list
Is anyone not named??
Look, hope I’m wrong about young Allison, and I wish him well - if he turned out to be an AFL footballer, I would be happy. I hope every kid on the list makes it.
However, on what I’ve seen to this point suggests he is a mile away.
He kicks 3 on the weekend - I would be rapt to eat humble pie

Re: Hayden McLean
I have posted about this guy before - I don’t know why we didn’t recruit him as a rookie when he was training with us a few years ago - check his form at Sandy - he was 18/19 and was getting top 10 on a regular basis that year - was top 1-2 in something like 4 of the last 5 games of the year - I posted the top players each game table from that season once before - he was very good the year he played at Sandy

Re: Hayden McLean
I hope Allison does play in the last game of the season, that will give him first hand experience of how much development he needs to make it.
That will be better for him than watching, better than being told about it. Experience it.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Re: Hayden McLean
Don’t see what position McLean plays in the big league
Not good enough to be a tall forward
Not big enough to be a ruckman

Talk to John Longmire, he has a different opinion of McLean.

Re: Hayden McLean
Its a media article re McLean its not locked in stone, but the highlights Ive seen of his AFL games he looks ok! I will back our recruiters in on this one! They have generally done well of identifying kids in that age bracket and if they believe McLean is a good option Ill be confident he will go ok.
BM tall kids can change significantly between 18-24 as they fill out and gain the strength and confidence to hold their positions. Rowan Marshall is the classic example of that!

Re: Hayden McLean
They thought Paul Hunter was an option too…
Again, undersized and no attribute to make up for it.

Re: Hayden McLean
We took Marshall over McLean I’ve read....if so we did ok as other clubs were reportedly watching Marshall’s developmentsaint6709 wrote: ↑Thu 19 Aug 2021 8:48pm I have posted about this guy before - I don’t know why we didn’t recruit him as a rookie when he was training with us a few years ago - check his form at Sandy - he was 18/19 and was getting top 10 on a regular basis that year - was top 1-2 in something like 4 of the last 5 games of the year - I posted the top players each game table from that season once before - he was very good the year he played at Sandy

Re: Hayden McLean
If Horse rated him, he’d play him a bit more
And wouldn’t entertain trading him
If he does get traded to StK - I hope I’m wrong and he goes ok

Re: Hayden McLean
I don’t understand Sydney and ruckman They found Mumford at a sausage sizzle who looked the goods then traded to GWS then Nankervis went to Richmond maybe Horse like GT doesn’t rate them as important

Re: Hayden McLean
Granted Hunter was an unmitigated disaster, but he was 28 and a washed up player who had been delisted from that years wooden spoon side. T
He was a last minute grasp at finding a backup ruckman which proved a terrible decision.
Height has absolutely zero impact on the players ability to ruck - look at Ryder he is 196cms then Alabakis 211cm tall and who couldnt get a kick in a horse stable. McLean is listed at 197cm but is more of a forward/ruckman which is what we need, as Marshall/Ryder can do the majority of the rucking. Then hope Marshall can remain injury free until Heath is ready to play.

Re: Hayden McLean
Ryder can jump,
As I wrote, if you are an undersized ruckman you need athletic ability to make up for it.
As a forward he averages 0.7 goals per game
As a ruckman he average 4 hit outs per game
Ordinary numbers

Re: Hayden McLean
They have Sam Naismith (who can’t get on the paddock) who always looked better than both Mumford and Nank

Re: Hayden McLean
Gees you a hard man, how much time did you think he spent rucking. He probably just contested the F50 contests and as far as goals per game Marshall averages 0.6 this year. Looking at his VFL stats he has kicked 11 from 6 games.
When I was looking at the VFL stats I saw Matthew HAMMELMAN 197cm ex Lion 25 yo has kicked 43 goals for Aspley. You wonder why the recruiters dont look at players like him??

Re: Hayden McLean
Has anyone from Sydney actually said McLean is up for trade or is it more shite from one of the 500+ football journo's looking for something to write about.

Re: Hayden McLean
Speaking of Aspley they are bailing out of the VFL at season's end after only 1 year and going back to a Queensland Football League.

Impatient
Yes Marshall does only have 7 goals
He also averages
15ppg
19hit outs pg
2.5 clearances
2.7 tackles
5 Marks
So it’s fair to say he spends a bit of time in the ruck!
