Strange article. Richo overlooked Naughton because he wanted a midfielder so he selected Coffield who was not a midfielder. Makes perfect sense. Still it is Foxsports.

Surely this forum is not admitting Elshaug was right for once?

Richo didn’t select anyone

He wasn’t the head recruiter

Elshaugh was wrong, he chose a HBF as a mid and let Naughton go elsewhere.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Naughton is a shocking kick for goal. But a decent mark. Probably an upgrade on Bwuce.

Naughton has kicked 36 Goals 32 behinds so far in 2021 so he's almost averaging 1 goal for every 2 shots, i don't know if that's shocking but it's not great.

So Richo had nothing to do with it, despite the article?

Richo got his way BUT Elshaugh made the selection, it's like Richo didn't trust the recruiters after the McCartin selection, or he felt he knew what his team needed better than anyone else.

I don't know how the Coach/Recruiter dynamic worked at the Saints back then, as we learn more it's like they flip flopped on who had the final say draft by draft.

What about Gibcus who is 195cm CHB as first pick ?
He would be available around our pick if we pick between 7 - 10.
Others around that pick would be mids being:
Simms / Goater or Callaghan might slip.

We could always take Butler, never can have too many Butlers especially when you are getting Silver Service from the Rucks.

Serious question?
How many coaches just get handed one? Was he capable of building one? He had 6 years

His 2016 team was pretty close. All he needed to do was address a few gaps and make some minor changes to things that were clearly not working

In that off season, he did none of those things

Naughton was a backman, at the time the Saints did not need Backmen.

So close. Like a lot of experts, identifies the problem - doesn't know how to fix it but can't acknowledge that.

Richo winged it for a long time on our coin and now others are picking up the pieces.

I do remember at the time that the talk was that Coffield would start on a HBF but that they thought he would develop into a midfielder. I’m guessing that was the logic

Maybe thats the plan for him and he's been changing his training.

I can't see Coffield being a true (inside) mid. He could possibly play a similar role to Brendan Goddard. Coffield is a tentative footballer. I don't see the tenacity that I see in Byrnes and Higgins, nor do I see the vision and evasiveness of Clark. It could all be about confidence, but I worry that the die has been cast. If you don't have that drive, hunger, tenacity, and proactiveness, ultimately you'll be overtaken and replaced by someone who does.

How was our recruiting and drafting in ARs time as coach

Sometimes a coaches fate is determined by the recruiting and list management.

2013/2014 drafts sealed his fate IMO

He coached really well in 2016 and 2017 IMO

In the off season, starting with the exit interviews, there will be serious thought into what to do/where to play Coff. Looks like he is not a defender anymore, lost his arrogance in the marking contest and too tentative with a forward to worry about. He is a good kick for goal, from memory, and used to be quick. He might well model his new playing persona on Membrey and become more than handy. I'd prefer him to Wood. Love to see him get a new lease on enjoying footy rather than slowly becoming draft/trade currency. I forget what injury he suffered that started his decline, shoulder? Concussion? against Adelaide?

Are you seriously arguing that AR is not responsible for how the list is shaped over a 6 year period?

Remember how Marshall couldn’t get a game in the ruck before all of Hickey, Longer and Pierce went down.

Bruce was the ruck forward… you remember the guy that was dominated in the centre and we frequently lost momentum both in the middle and up forward when he went in there

But yeah it was just recruiting

No

The recruiting department and list manager shape the list

The coaches coach

Otherwise WTF would you have a list manager and recruiting dept?

Seriously

Why would Allen Richardson draft ANYONE?!
How many U18 games would he atten every year????

He has a voice, but at the end of the day, the decisions to draft were Tony Elshaugs

The decisions around contracts

You’re not listening… he’d have a say as to what type of trades we’d trade he. He picked which players we persevered with…
Why recruit a ruck or trade one in when he argues that Longer is the man… don’t need to prioritise skilled crumbing forwards because he chose Weller and Newnes as players above reproach etc

Richo may not recruit players… but he shaped the list

Delusional to suggest otherwise… one cannot even imagine that you believe otherwise

Genuinely think we have a bit of tradable currency as well.
As in who?

We are also weakened in that we have a 2 FA s and RFA. All of whom if they go could result in us getting not much in return.

There is a lot of hype on Billing gaining an extra first rounder for us if he walks, but I just cannot see any other club stumping up enough cash.

Even Battle is that awkward height that would not see him generate much in return.
Think if Dunstan or Ross wanted to go we'd get a 2nd round as either a trade or compo in Dunstans case. With Bytal ready to take the next step. If Billings left late 1st early second with Clarke Gresham Higgins to come back.
That's what cI'm thinking: Dunstan, Billings, Ross are exactly who we can and should be trying to maximise value out of.
