He would have cost too much and he wanted to play for Sydney who had expressed interest him in the past.

Re: Tristan Xerri
Why were Port keen to get rid of him? Something fishy about this.

Re: Tristan Xerri
Yes, we offered a third, which I believed was overs. We should have stuck with our original offer (4th) and not budged. They wanted a second - which was an ambit claim. Deal should have died long before today IMO and we should have turned our attention elsewhere.Gershwin wrote: ↑Wed 13 Oct 2021 6:53pmThey want a future 2nd not 3rd.evertonfc wrote: ↑Wed 13 Oct 2021 6:39pm Honestly would now rather pick up Ceglar for peanuts, have Hawthorn take part of his salary and use those 2-3 years to properly develop Heath (and draft another one next year). Would free up Marshall to go forward with King, which is such an attractive proposition and would probably extend his career. Ceglar is now set to go for Geelong for a swap of late picks - a clever deal by them.
Pick 62 or future fourth should be the offer for Xerri. They literally won't play him next year, at which point we can get him for free.
Anyway, I expect we'll end up doing the deal for a future third, because our modus operandi is all about "get the player in the door", even if it means paying over the odds.
I'd also be perfectly happy axing Hunter and finding the next best WAFL/SANFL/VFL ruckman in the 22-24 age bracket. That said, the coaching staff believe that a good pre-season would see Hunter become much more effective. Not sure I share their optimism, but I see the point.
As we now see, the deal hasn't happened and that is absolutely no concern for me. Time to trawl the State Leagues and see what comes up. I'm convinced there's better options than Paul Hunter, although maybe he's a different player when fully fit (seems unlikely).
Luke Strnadica is a 203cm-type who would probably offer all the same attributes to Xerri at a similar age; Zach Strom is similar to Marshall (shorter but extremely mobile, can ruck or KPP). They're certainly out there.

Re: Tristan Xerri
Ladhams cost pick 12 in the end.
If we had split pick 9 for two late firsts, he would have been worth about an 18.
Will be a very good player

Port had no room for him
Dixon, Georgiadis and Marshall preferred forwards
Lycett preferred ruckman

Re: Tristan Xerri
St Kilda could always pick up Tom Campbell for a year as a back up, for nothing.
I don't think North has re-signed him, yet.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Bottom line the a you don't cough up a second round pick for a third rate ruckman. We already did that with Billy Longer.

Re: Tristan Xerri
Another time the great philosophy of selling off great players for draft picks is a ridiculous notion!!!
NDS for pick 25 (Billy Longer)
Seriously that is laughable

Re: Tristan Xerri
Really hope this doesn't come back to bite us. We 'almost' landed Cox back in the day who probably would have helped us to win a few flags, and we identified Draper as a gun before he had played a game in the AFL. We do need another readymade ruck - Archie Smith would be my preference.
People thinking that Hunter is suddenly a viable option because he didn't look quite so terrible against Freo need to remember that Darcy was injured early in that game so he was up against a hobbled Darcy and Lloyd Meek, a 23 year old who had played 8 games. Hunter still only managed 4 disposals and 16 hitouts.

Archie told Brisbane on the 13 of September that he would explore his options elsewhere and then retired from the game on the 20th.mad saint guy wrote: ↑Wed 13 Oct 2021 11:22pm Really hope this doesn't come back to bite us. Paul Hunter will be feeling please tonight.
He is yet to be contracted for 2022.
But he will soon become a required player.

Re: Tristan Xerri
The Brad Hill deal sent a message that St Kilda is a club willing to overpay for a player they want . North had nothing to lose and clearly aren’t in need of another 3rd round pick. They are focusing on first and second round picks. It’s also probably about them sending a message to their playing group that they are going to demand a high price for any contracted player.

If Mason Cox is delisted by Collingwood, then I'd rather have him as a DFA for a season than Paul Hunter.

Re: Tristan Xerri
If he came cheap, then maybe. Question is, why hasn’t Collingwood played him more in the ruck? Granted, they have Grundy, but does Cox have the endurance?Life Long Saint wrote: ↑Thu 14 Oct 2021 8:03am If Mason Cox is delisted by Collingwood, then I'd rather have him as a DFA for a season than Paul Hunter.
Anyway it seems we are in the same position as last season. Extremely vulnerable to injuries/absences of Ryder and Marshall.
Maybe if Sharman develops and King continues his rapid improvement, we’ll not be so dependent on Marshall playing up forward.
Hunter seems to be depth. I’d like to know how far Heath is off in terms of development. Is he big and strong enough to debut next season? It may come to that.

Re: Tristan Xerri
He's 18 and spent this year doing his VCE.
Don't hold your breath for any meaningful output in the ruck in the next few years. He'll be at least 21 before he's ready for that burden.

Re: Tristan Xerri
Marshall was 22yo before he played
Heath is 18 and probably years away
Could turn out to be Spida Everitt or Lewis Pierce?!

Re: Tristan Xerri
Bottom line didn't over pay so good decision.
Will be other options in 12 months time and the reality is this non trade will not be the difference between a top 4 finish or not in 2022 .

Basically didn't have draft picks to trade. It's obvious they want the two NGA guys.

Re: Tristan Xerri
Could have easily done the same deal as Sydney if we really wanted him
Salary cap tight
We are a middling list
WTF would the cap be tight
Sydney have a better list and with Buddy on 1.4M this season and they afforded him!
