Re: bontempelli
The thing about this guy for me was that he seemed to feature in so many other draft candidate videos.sainters85 wrote:not sure if i'll ever get over the fact that we passed on an absolute superstar; just 27 disposals and 2 goals last night
Not only that, these videos always showed him doing the team tough stuff, the fast chases, the tackling required and most importantly his size was what the saints needed.
Bontempelli to me was an outsider in experts draft predictions who rose through the list as people got to see his style. He was a ready made AFL player due to his attributes. Yes I couldn't understand how others couldn't see that. Same with Cripps who now plays outside but was always an inside player at Geraldton and East Perth.
No disrespect to our recruited guys as they will develop and may exceed the above in time. But, we were looking for players to make a difference. A Judd type was required in my opinion. That's why I thought Petracca was the pick if we retained the no 1 pick. My preference if a trade was on for picks 4 and 7 was either Weller or Cockatoo plus Peter Wright.
Having said all that, players develop at different rates, others take more time to adjust to match the speed to contests at the top level. I am sure paddy and Jack Billings will get there although there are risks to this.
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

Bontempelli is our new Judd. Billings is Ball. That simple. A rare howler from our recruiters. I just hope that it doesn't cost us flags, as the non selection of Judd did.

Get over it guys, you an only draft them when its your turn. Billings is good, will be very good. The Bont already is and is only one game away from being great.

But Luke Ball was a fantastic player. If it weren't for his soft tissue injuries, he could have made far more of an impact towards our chances in winning a premiership.White Winmar wrote:Bontempelli is our new Judd. Billings is Ball. Could have won us a flag in 2010 if RL could focus on what he could do instead of what he couldn't do. Negative **** he was.Sainternist wrote:But Luke Ball was a fantastic player. Edit: Or 2009 if RL had any control over interchanges. That was someone else's fault...

Re: bontempelli
Still early days, but we probably have to accept that Billings may never be even nearly as good as Bont. The way I see it, his future could have three outcomes:
Best case scenario, Billings will be a super star yet, but take up to five-plus years to hit his straps.
Likely case scenario, Billings will be a good, possibly very good player and be worthy of any team's best 22 (Ball v Judd).
Worse (and highly unlikely) case scenario, Billings turns out to be a complete misfire (Fiora v Pavlich).

The Bont is entering Rioli like status a simple handball receive and a kick to a free team mate is over baked 10 fold by the Channel 7 wankfest.

Re: bontempelli
Bontompelli is mobile and tall, like James Hird used to be. Hird was selected at 63 or something wasn't he? Bont also plays for a side who are very guide - worthy finalists last year and grand finalists/premiers this year.
Let's see how Billings plays in a side who are winning regularly and then make a judgement.
It will also be great to see a fit and firing McCartin in the forward line, and our team will finally have a legitimate centre half back for the first time in years.

Bont butchered the ball in the first half Saturday but yes he had two big moments a good mark and a simple goal. He is a very good play but its besoming a joke how over hyped hes become.

Re: bontempelli
Agreed, Sainternist. Luke Ball was a very good player for us. I think JB is a gun and will have a great career. But Ball was no Judd and from what I've seen, the Bont is way ahead of JB at this stage and is likely to stay there. Imagine Judd in 2004-5, in that last quarter in the GF of 2009 and in the dying moments of the draw in 2010. I'm pretty sure that we wouldn't have allowed Judd to get away to the filth. I know it's ancient history now, but Judd's non-selection cost us at least one, if not two flags. The irony was that JB wanted him and Ball and thought we'd get them with picks 2 and 5. Thommo got his way, got the Xavier boy first, and WCE swooped unexpectedly. Those two were a bit like the difference between Roo and Kosi. Both worth their picks, but one became a true great, while Kosi was a very good player before the sniping dog cut him down.Sainternist wrote:But Luke Ball was a fantastic player. The Bont is a cool looking cat too - he's a marketing dream. He always seems so composed beyond his years on and off the field. If he can help get the dogs over the line Sat its going to cement his stocks for sure. But at the moment he's had a one really good year in a well structured team. One year doesn't a champion make. Sustained excellence is the marker for that, giving your club a chance to stay near the top for a long time and keep your premiership window open.
The dogs finished 7th and have really benefited from that extra week off hitting mentally weak WC - and then got GWS in the prelim who were very green in big finals. They will find it tough against Swans set on redemption for their s*** GF against hawks.
Its going to be interesting to be interesting to see how these tall mids cope over the years with having to get up and down a lot with their height. Same as our blakey acres. Lets see if Bont can string some good seasons together first before we declare him a "champion" or a "gun" or a "suyperstar". There have been way too many flash in the pans for one season in the AFL. And too many teams that shoot up and then shoot back down again just as quick.
Dogs have shot up quick and will lose access to good picks now. Will be interesting to see if they can sustain their success next season and maybe won;t have that extra week to even the top eight up next year. Have they got the necessary depth or will they be another PA?

Oh no Jiggster, what about Jimmy Webb's greatest song 'Didn't We'? I'm sure the lyrics were written for all of us Saint supporter's after the drawn GF in 2010.
Just read Jimmy Webb's lyrics as 'Old Blue Eyes' croons the Saints lament in 'Didn't We?'
Here 'tis Jiggster, don't get too teared up.
Didn't we?
This time we almost made some sense of it
Didn't we?
This time I had the answer, right here in my hand
Then I touched it and it had turned to sand
This time we almost sang our song in tune
Didn't we, love?
This time we almost made it, made it to the moon
Didn't we, love?
This time we almost made our poem rhyme
This time we almost made that long hard climb
Didn't we almost make it?
Didn't we almost make it?
Didn't we almost make it this time?
