Re: St Kilda going home !!
Great for marketing.
Great for image.
Great for the players.
Great for footy fans in general (particularly interstate supporters staying in St Kilda Rd hotels).
Great for the St Kilda restaurant district.
Too many positives -- why hunt frantically for negatives?

'cant discuss things on your own' -? I am putting fwd a viewpoint - one I have had for 20 straight years,
The Junction has always been a dream of mine.
Obviously location is not the MAJOR factor in a players decision - it is a preference. For some weak (they dont care) and for some strong (they care). Cant you understand this nuance?
You have to be the thickets bloke on here. You only see anything in black and white. Your head is like a box of mallets.
And yeah - we are doing terrific at sponsorship at the moment arent we. All those big named brands are just calling us! Might have to take the phone off the hook if this keeps up!
Its not necessarily actual location but branding and perception. At the moment we have several things going against our brand .
But St Kilda would make us 'cool'. You cant deny that.
Real nice Con. Parents must be proud. The reason I said you cant discuss things on your own is because you put my name to something that had nothing to do with me and then lied about it anyway. It was to try and get certain people on side. And I cant understand that nuance because there is no facts to support what you say. Give me some facts that location of training facilities matters when players swap clubs. . And who said we were doing well with sponsorship? You really havent got any clue about discussing things. And where does the big noting come from Con. Is it when I use examples and give a reason for the examples and may use a name of a player. Wow. Now if you could only explain the Sam Gilbert leaving a man short for the rest of the game thing. And are you sure im one of the thickets blokes on here. What is that anyway Con?
And which part about being subbed off in the first quarter due to a pre-existing and well know injury dont you understand?
How did that not leave us short for the rest of the game when the sub was expired in the first quarter?
Box of mallets.
Tell me you arent serios Con. Yes those guys lived where they lived because they played for us but they left to go to a place along way away so why wouldnt a player from another club do the same with us at seaford. Con you do realise you can only get players 3 was. Drafting, trading and FA. A player who is drafted cant say we are to far away so I wont play with them. Did Dal and BJ care about going miles from home? It seems not. A strange answer Con. Very strange.
Now the injury to Gilbert. its to hard to type slowly but I will try to explain. Before Gilbert was injured how many players could be rotated on the ground. In case you dont know it is 21. After Gilbert was injured how many players could be rotated on the ground? Again I will answer because im sure you wont get it. Yes its 21. Now Con explain how we were a man short for the whole game as you said? Think about it Con. It isnt a trick question.
Re: St Kilda going home !!
Do we honestly think we'll be playing AFL games there?
Who are all of these folks who desperately want to go and watch training constantly.... How does that contribute to the club? Financially, nope...
Perhaps taking the kids once in a while is ok, but seriously watching warm ups and open training session (nothing) drills is far from exciting!
I'd prefer they'd suck it up and train where they are told, the get paid FFS

Around Arden st is an industrial, housing commission, boring dump which is why the Roos have no supporter heartland.
It is close to the city... Most people in Melbourne live out of the city
I'd take a bayside suburb anyday... Especially in summer...
See plenty driving to my area for the afternoon... Not many would be driving to Arden St to spend the day?

We arent playing there. we may not even be training at the junction but a ground over the road. What about the negative that CV want to have control of the ground for the whole year. That overodes everything you said. I dont even get the interstate footy fams or the resturant thing.

I agree with the last part, if it would be our facility, and WE ARE IN CHARGE, and it didn't cost anything - then great.Con Gorozidis wrote: Were discussing families and you cant see the relevance of abs stats?

Cool doesnt mean i think its 'cool' - or you think its 'cool' im talking only about corporate branding and getting new fans/sponsors. Different things.
If we cant get the facility then we cant get the facility - Im saying IF it became available - we should be first in line.
FFS
As for the families part, I know a lot of people with young families that live in the Waverley area, some within 100 meters of the Hawks training venue. NONE of them follow the Hawks.
In my experience proximity does not have a causal effect with supporting a team.
In every case the kids support the team that their Dad barracks for.

Typical flogger66.
His 'examples' weren't relevant to the debate but another chance for him to 'alert' everyone that he knows where some ex players live . Yes flogger- we all noticed your none too subtle 'alert'.
Well done working it in to the debate though.
See if you can flag that you 'know' players personal info any time you can.
Nice and subtle- noone noticed.

One is about supporters and fan base etc.
One is about players personal choice of workplace.
Two very separate issues . Don't mix them.
And where have u been the last decade?
Nth Melbourne is now a hipster paradise.
Yes they have some public housing. So what .
Nth Melbourne very groovy these days.
And once again irrelevant. 3km from cbd is 3km from cbd.
That is a convenient workplace in anyone's language.
Re: St Kilda going home !!
Because if your Sub is activated
Your 4th player rotation is taken... Without your control
So Gilbert, whilst feeling fresh .... And not spent physically... He cannot be utilised as an asset and Is out of action. It's a limitation
To get maximum benefit from a sub
I cannot see for the life of me, why the are held for so long? To get maximum benefit one half each would maximise their physical capabilities
Hmm?... I suppose they can't activate due to injury risks... Which can still happen anyway?
What's the point of having a guy, who can only play 30mins... It stupid IMO
A poorly thought out facet of the game...

Again the post to get people on side. Of course my examples were correct. You said the location blows the players away as far as choice. i pointed out that we lost 2 players who didnt seem to worry about the area especially going to tullamarine from brighton. And drafted players dont get a choice so why does it matter if players are blown away. actually how does it even help our club if players all over the land are blown away as to where we train. By the way i know where those guys live because i heard it either on here or read it somewhere. Happy Con. Dont know neither of those guys. Do know your dad though. better manners than you. A true Ormond footballer as opposed to what ever you are trying to be.
You really are strange Con. How did you go with player short thing. A bit hard to understand? And it least I am pointing this squarely at you. Who the hell is your post even talking to? Law. hilarious. you have really good names for me Con. Pity I find it hilarious. Now settle down con and debate like an adult. And stop shaking in anger.

Re: St Kilda going home !!
Con, there is no financial benefit for St.Kilda to train at the oval next to the Junction Oval, which is what we would be doing and at the whim of CV and Cricket Australia.
Can you please explain why all those firms up St.Kilda Road would suddenly come swooning to our door begging us to make them our official sponsor and throwing dollars at us.
Why would they do that, just because we train at a ground near their office. Please they couldn't care less where we train.
However, if we have success like Geelong and Hawthorn have recently, then they will come whether were at Seaford, Moorabbin or any where else in the state of Victoria. Businesses like to be associated with success.
Plus, how does the availability of a nice latte help improve our players performance. Richmond have been at the Punt Road oval, only a kilometre from the CBD, has that bought them any success over the last 30 years? What about Melbourne, have they filled their trophy case over the last couple of decades?
But they can get a nice latte in town or in either Swan St or Bridge Road.
The only way we really benefit from a move back to the JO is if we get a stadium on the par of Skilled Stadium, kick cricket out and play the same sort of games there that Geelong do at Skilled Stadium.
As I stated to someone else here, to build a stadium like that, you are looking at 250 million dollar bill.
Can't see that happening unless the Victoria Government strikes a massive deposit of oil, gold or some other precious metal.

We may have missed out on Josh Caddy.... That is a greater concern in than losing players that are firmly entrenched.plugger66 wrote:Animal Enclosure wrote:Can we just make one thing clear...any move to the JC has nothing to do with supporters watching training!
It would be purely a strategic decision regarding keeping & attracting players & commercial opportunities.
I hope its true that Foxy is involved....I posted a while ago that St Kilda needs people with big ideas & the power to see them implemented.
Do you honestly think we lost players because of where we train. BJ lives around Brighton and trains in Tullamarine. dal live in a similar spot and trains at Arden St. As for commercial i still dont see why a huge company cares where you train. they get their money from the jumper or shorts not around the ground signage.
Keep thinking small Plugger.
Re; commercial benefits, maybe ask Richmond's sponsors if they value having their logo plastered over the Tigers new facility that is passed by thousands of cars every day.

Firstly the Caddy thing is complete guess work and its nothing to do with thinking small. We arent going to play their for a start. Its a training ground that some on here have said will be outside the junction oval or if in the oval CV have said they want full control. I could easily say keep thinking in the past but i wont. Also the Tigers ground is on the corner of Hoddle st and brunton Ave. reckon it get 50 times the cars that go around that park of lakeside drive a day.
Im happy to go there at no cost and better facilties. if it costs then forget it.

Just a reminder, Caddy went to Geelong, not to any of the Melbourne based clubs, he went there, probably because of the 3 premierships they won.Animal Enclosure wrote:We may have missed out on Josh Caddy.... Think Richmond's sponsors would have been more excited seeing their brand being displayed on the MCG in September, if they want to advertise on the road, just put up a billboard, probably a heel of a lot cheaper than the sponsorship deal and would have exactly, or maybe better effect if the Billboard is on the Monash, or Westgate, or Tullamarine etc.
Sponsors are attracted by success, just look at the Green Bay Packers in the U.S. They're based in a small city in a cold and frigid corner of the state of Wisconsin, yet they attract big bucks because they have won titles.
We start winning games, sponsors come and they wont give a rats ass where we train.
Except for the sanity nothing much has been lost.

Don't panic everyone - seems the clubs press release seems to indicate that there s just way too much exciting activity going on around the Frankston area for St Kilda consider a presence in St Kilda . Why leverage arguably Australia's most iconic location to market the club when we can look for fans in Frankston ??

Re: St Kilda going home !!
Tony Dodemaides comments could be seen as negative to say the least. Disappointing, but probably similar to what forced the Saints hand back in the mid 60s.HitTheBoundary wrote:I can't see the relevance of the ABS stats.
And as for moving to St.Kilda because it would make us cool?!
St.Kilda used to be cool, now it's a plastic facade and for the beautiful people. I suppose it depends on your definition of cool. But once again, it's not relevant.
The important thing is that wherever we are, we have control of the facilities.
Tony Dodemaide has made it clear that this will not be the case;
"Cricket Victoria will only consider sharing the Junction Oval with the St Kilda Football Club if the summer sport is the main tenant with year-round, priority access to the historic ground."
"We are the head lease-holder at the Junction Oval and we would certainly insist on remaining so," Dodemaide said. "We want to be able to say we can have priority access... "
http://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/ ... zqt17.html
Not being in charge of our own facility would not be cool.
I'm in my mid 50s so can vaguely remember them at the JO. I'm not too sure what financial benefits there would be in returning, but it is a romantic thought, maybe even cool.

Re: St Kilda going home !!
There has been plenty said about the "Saints to the Junction Oval" story BUT
We need to look at it realistically. Here is how I see it as a step by step process.
Cricket would love to re-develop the Junction Oval
The State Government have said they will commit $Millions to the Junction Oval if cricket can share it with another major sport (AFL)
The opportunistic AFL (and their mates at the BIG Vic clubs) see it as an opportunity to get on to the MCG in March. St Kilda is little more than the pawn they want to use to achieve this.
St Kilda has a $15Mill facility at Seaford, and a long term lease on the place. We also have Moorabbin that the club wishes to re-develop with Government (State & Federal) money.
Before St Kilda gets to the Junction Oval (It needs to ascertained if they want to) decisions need to be made re Seaford & Moorabbin (both will cost plenty).
At this point in time the AFL, cricket, State Government and the BIG clubs need St Kilda more than St Kilda need them. Remember, the Federal Government will be the ones who put in the most $$$$$$$$$$ and they haven't committed ONE RED CENT yet
Romantically, it sounds like a great idea. Realistically, it is very much a LONG SHOT !!

What I do know is that i see plenty of Saints players at the cafe I go to in St Kilda which is 5 minutes to junction. jack, Geary, Dal, Goddard, Joey and plenty of others. Compared to Seaford where they might have to kill a couple of hours it would be much better. It might not be the main reason but it might add to their general satisfaction levels and make the place seem a little more 21st century and glamourous and make some of the bigger clubs look less enticing. It looks big time instead of back water.

If they don't want us at the Junction, fine. Let them find their own money then. Good luck, last time I checked district and state cricket rated big ZZZZZs with almost everybody. We have Seaford, and maybe this will make Kingston council wake up finally and realise that having a AFL club in their muncipality is a big plus.
