Lets call him Marco Pierre after the brilliant English chef. Fascinating guy!
In Springfield, they're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. They’re eating – they are eating the pets of the people that live there.

For the information of all you ignorant youngsters, "Spencer the Garbageman" was a character on Roy Rene (Mo McKackey)'s radio show in the 40's and 50's.

Re: Spencer White
Just got back from having beers with a mate who has a nephew at the Pies and is a massive tigers fan. He has a coupe of other nephews on lists and watches heaps of tac and vfl. He reiterated how pissed he was at Spencer not getting to the tigers. He claimed on talent from late season Spencer is top 2 in the draft. He is a super harsh critic and not one for light praise so has me pumped. He said last season that that Witts guy at the Pies is overrated despite pies mates telling me he'd win the 2012 browlow so maybe he has a little bit of a clue.

So, outta interest... who did your mate rate as number 1 'on talent' in this draft?
Also, how does he rate Lee and Hickey?
... and Mitchell Johnson?

I sure hope that Gringo's mate meant our Nathan Wright, Kosi.kosifantutti wrote:Nathan WrightDave McNamara wrote: So, outta interest... who did your mate rate as number 1 'on talent' in this draft?
Because I'd be worried about his judgement, and hence by extension..., worried about Tom Lee's creditials...
... if he meant this Nathan Wright.

Re: Spencer White
He didn't actually say what his number one was but was talking up spencer Particularly. Did know much about Tom Lee but the Foxtel cup games he saw but wasn't as keen on him was the feeling. He thinks Mc Bean they got was a steal and will be better than Grundy who he thinks is overrated along with Witts at the Pies. Says after watching quite a bit of the Pies reserves games that Witts is the most over hyped player ever.
He didn't really know much about Wright but liked his highlight reel. i was really chuffed when we got Saad last year after seeing him in a couple of VFL games and he just seemed to be the right pace for AFL. He says he watched Spencer play TAC and was just amazed at the athleticism for his size and said he's got the attributes to be something special. Most of all he said his kicking is exceptional- something not many modern forwards manage to do well.
He not just rated him he said he should develop into an elite player in a few years. This guy doesn't talk anyone up so it's not like he is trying to build him up to me or anything.
I heard from other people that watch TAC that he's really "raw" what ever that means and also the "project" and "potential" words a fair bit but he was much nicer about him, just said he needs to work like any footy player but the talent is there so the rest should take care of its self.

Re: Spencer White
White is 'raw' because he needs more preparation and time. While that's true of most draftees, most draftees played for a state team. White lacks elite level endurance, which is always a real worry. He also wasn't a consistent performer at TAC level. Even the VFL will be a bigger jump for him than our other draftees. Don't be surprised if he has a really slow start or spends some time in the Sandy reserves. If he starts tearing things up straight away, then get really excited.gringo wrote:I heard from other people that watch TAC that he's really "raw" what ever that means...

Dr Spaceman wrote:A little bit off topic perhaps, however I find it annoying the use of the word “steal” in regards to the draft, eg:

Used only because Collingwood fans can relate to the word, it being a common pastime among their number

That sounds like a pretty fair assessment. I don't have any expectations of how long he might take but having him in our system for the future sounds good to me. It would be nice if we found our next Lockett or Hall though.

Re: Spencer White
He improved very rapidly in '12 once they changed his asthma medication and got his lungs operating at better than the previous 60%. His improvement was dramatic enough to have many regard him as the best forward in the TAC in the second half of the year. He kicked about 5 goals prior to the med change and about 30 after. That suggests to me dramatic improvement off a pretty good physical and skill package. As for the endurance bit, if the quacks can keep his lung capacity somewhere near right and allow him to work at the necessary level, past performance at <18y.o. on 60% lung capacity will be no guide to the future level he can attain.vacuous space wrote:White is 'raw' because he needs more preparation and time.
