Amazing how this topic has generated so much debate pro and con, but I was far more impressed with what Jack Riewoldt and Adam Treloar stated when asked about their views on AFL360 last night. In case you missed it, both emphatically supported Ross and Membrey taking leave of absence to be with their families in their time of need, and that they would not hesitate to put their family ahead of football commitments.
<snip>
Lastly, the absence of Ross and Membrey had nothing to do with the 2nd half capitulation to the Crows in Cairns - it was the failure of the same players that were able to lead the Crows by 6 goals that lost all sense of team play after Hunter Clark was poleaxed out of the game by David MacKay!
then we should also hold their opinions on the clash between MacKay and Clark
.. in case you missed it they both hold the view that it was accidental contact & Clark should have been more aware & protective of himself

It’s not just a game of local footy

It’s a multi million dollar business

Jobs are always on the line, that means livelihoods

You lose games of footy, careers end!!!

People have gone on Ashes tours and missed births, first words, first steps, milestones, family deaths.

It’s the nature of professional sport

You sign a contract
The players aren't coal miners, FIFO workers, in the Defence Force, or professional cricketers. People go in to all those roles with their eyes wide open about the travel and time away from family that is part of the job. Otherwise they don't go into those industries.

Where in the contract AFL footballers sign did it say they'd be away from their families for weeks and months on end in the middle of a pandemic?

And despite that still 99% of them went along with it no problem.

Wage is still irrelevant. They get paid so much because that's how much revenue the sport earns, its not a reflection of the importance of their job in the world. And anyway, the players are paid by the AFL (it's not St Kilda's money) and Seb and Membrey missing a game does not cost the AFL one cent in lost revenue, the game still goes on, the same amount of people still turn up and still watch it on TV.

Potentially losing footy matches and careers would have all been factors when coming to the decision, and in the end this was the best path for them both. I'm sure there are many many more instances when these things are weighed up and the player chooses to play, and we never hear anything about it.
Gee whiz Dud, we're talking a couple of weeks away. Last year was completely different. If this thing drags on into moths then I would be far more understanding.
Wage is NOT irrelevant, doesn't matter how much you say it is. It IS a reflection of the importance of their job. They are the stars in a billion dollar industry. We can try and trivialise what they do but how many of us have 10's of thousands of ppl watching us at work each week, passionately screaming that we do the right thing, idolising us, buying items with our photos on it etc etc? How many of us get interviewed after work each week? Newspapers writing about us. We can moralise about how doctors and scientists contribute far more, but as a society we have set the importance of their work and they (the players) have accepted these terms and benefited massively. I don't begrudge them 1 cent, but I expect a huge commitment and a huge sacrifice in return. I've said this ad nauseum, no -one would expect either player to be away if a loved one was seriously ill. It's simply not the case here though, but ppl keep banging on about 'family comes first.' Does that mean a player leaving the team to attend a christening, a 21st, a parents 60th birthday, a wedding anniversary, a graduation are all on the agenda for players to leave as well? Are you ok with players not playing for these reasons?

He wanted to play but Covid got in the way.

Bottom line is: who'd you rather have pull on the jumper? Someone who puts his family first or someone who puts the club first.

I'll never forget hearing nick on radio in the early days. He was asked if he had one wish, what would it be. We all thought he'd say world peace or some such - that's the way the conversation was headed. But no he was unequivocal. To see st Kilda win a premiership.

Nick might have to wait awhile.

I agree with her Saynta.

Ross wanted to avoid the risk of getting trapped in a COVID bubble with his team mates. Fair enough, I’d do the same, more power to him etc. etc..
Kids were not sick.

Just sayin, based on what I know.

I agree with Caro 100 this time and I think she is one of the few people who can say it in today’s climate.

Most of it is fair enough

Unfortunately we are fair game, because of decisions made and performances

Yep have to agree with most of what Caro writes in that article, player avialiability through non football related matters must be hurting the club and clearly creating division within the playing group.

I think Brad Hill being given time off to visit Perth in the week after a thrashing could have been very destabilising and was an increadibly poor look. I don't think Brad has earnt the respect of his teammates and that wouldn't have helped.

There's been chatter recently about this summers Ashes being in jeopardy if the Government doesn't allow the English players (and other touring party members) families to come out with them.

You ever tried to look after three babies on your own?

I one hundred percent disagree with that nasty piece of work who is now just trying to justify her hatchet job And I don't know how anyone could but each to their own mate. Seb thought he could get back but was thwarted by border issues. Not his fault. I have a daughter who recently gave birth and she needs all the help from her partner that she can get.

The saints lost because they are weak and threw in the towel, not because Seb and Members weren't playing.

The president should sack however talked to that cow. Leaks like that hurt the club more than the two not playing FFS.

Good. I'd ban the cricketers too.

No doubt we have moved to a new paradigm.

This generation still expect the big income, but also expect their employer to accept their individual needs and be flexible around them.

It is a far cry from Keep Calm and Carry On ethic that served the populace through two world wars.

But what does it breed? Entitlement perhaps? A sense that my own needs need to be met before anyone else's?

Each new shift in ethics and values brings upsides and downsides. What will be fascinating about this generation is how they go with parenting, when they have to meet the needs of their kids first and surrender their own needs in order to do so OR, do they just stick the kids in front of a screen for 8 hours a day?

Seb Ross, Tim Membrey, Jake Carlisle family leave.
Where did they go?
Did they go interstate or secretly go overseas ?
