In the aftermath of a shocking Preliminary Final exit, Geelong coach Mark "Bomber" Thompson remarked to the media "I can't believe it. The opposition were committed to the contest from the first bounce of the ball, they won it most times and kept hitting targets. We just kept expecting them to take the foot off the pedal, miss targets by hand and shank their shots at goal. We would have died wondering."
Fullback Matthew Scarlet added, "usually we can just coast through a game and will ourselves back into it at half time. I don't understand what happened - we've never seen this kind of footy before."
Geelong were at a complete loss, but football experts are dubbing the move as a masterstroke on the part of Collingwood coach Mick Malthouse, and have coined the term "Turning Up To Play" to describe the revolutionary new game style. Malthouse denied any existence of such a game plan but was heard to slip the reference "Pies Footy" at the post-match media conference.
Rumours also abound that the game plan is a modified version of a similar plan found on laptops recently procured from Moorabbin Cash Converters, but this is dismissed as hearsay.
