Couldn't have said it better statsStatsman wrote:That's just classic Milney. He can't do anything the easy way. In fact, the harder it is, the more likely he is to kick it. For every time we've thrown out hands in the air in despair, he's given us a moment like that to throw out hands in the air with joy! It makes Milney what he is.saintDal wrote:Oh and I could've killed him for doing that dribble goal. Almost gave me a heart attack when he played on
When Milney out-bodied Hunt in that contest then immediately played on towards the boundary line I was thinking, "no Milney, go back and take your kick", and then he dribbled it through.
It was as if I forgot who had the footy for a split second.
Was never in doubt.
Wonderful performance on a big stage.

And that's neglecting his incredible pick up and pin point pass to a running schneider for our last goal that effectively proved the difference in the end.Unforgiven wrote:Havn't watched a reply but...
Kicked 3, had an assist to Roo, and Won a centre clearance, dance and passed it to a running BJ who hit up Roo. That's an involvement in at least 5 goals tonight. Fantastic.

i can't stop watching that passage of play that led to Milney's third.
Thought it was a great call from Bruce in the build up, and then the goal, well...
To play on from there was just 100% Milne.
He misses you are tearing your hair out, he goals and you are screaming your heart out. After just kicking two in 5mins, you just knew it was going through. The guys in the box seemed to enjoy it almost half as much as i did.

Apart from the win...the best thing about that effort last night is it really sets up Mini for a great finals series.
The cats were worried about Schneider's midfield role and goal assist ability....and Milney just slotted into the role that Schneider had been filling beautifully.

Stephen Milne's efforts this year have put him into my "Best Saints team since 1960", not an easy thing to do. His skill level is at the highest level and the growth in his courage and discipline has sent him to the elite class. He has gone from a player that his own teammates thought was poor a few years ago (to his surprise) to one whom, I am sure, has the utmost respect among the playing group.
I could not understand how Leon Davis was AA last year - I have never seen him play a good game. His defence is woeful. Maybe he only plays well when I'm not there. Last year he kicked 35 goals, his highest tally ever. Stephen Milne kicked 46 and has bettered 35 on six occasions. If Leon Davis is the yardstick for that position, and if there was any justice at all, Stephen Milne should be a certainty for AA this year. Alas, Saints fans know all too well that justice and the Red, White and Black have not been happy partners. Maybe, this year.

No....I meant Schneider in the context of what I wrote. ie note the reference to midfield role.
Yes they will also have been worried about Roo, Hayes, Dal, BJ, Milne etc..
But if the cats could chop out Schneider who has been a major source of goal involvements this year., it would goa long way to keeping us quiet.
Instead Milney slotted into Scheider's role in the midfield...won a goodly amount of ball out of the centre..set up goals with his field kicking....and tackled like a man posses (7).
Milne played a great game asa midfilder-forward, rather than just asa small forward.
......and yes I know he has been rotating up the ground all year...but not in the way he did in the cats game where he filled the role that Schneider had been often playing this year.

It was very pleasing RL had faith in rotating him on the ball and in the forward for such a big game. I think that coaching move gave him the right amount of confidence for him to go into the game with a full head of steam.
Such a promising sign to see the little Yapper be a major contributor in such a big game.

Milney was fantastic last night. Got them going after cats were hurting us in the middle and at stoppages. Absolutely towelled up that squib with the painted on muscles.Sainternist wrote:Such a promising sign to see the little Yapper be a major contributor in such a big game.
But, so he should. He is 30 years old now. A senior player at a top 4 club.
We should expect all of our players in the 25-30 year old range to perform to their abilities in big games most times.
Two more to come.
It's not a lucky bounce that curls the ball across the line. It's quite repeatable.Reverend Bob wrote:Bizarre play on to dribble in a goal. It goes the wrong way and he's a villain with that margin, but when he's on, stand back and watch.
So to have it go the wrong way you'd have to kick it poorly, like shanking a set shot.
I'd back Milne to get the dribble right more often than the set shot.

He also did in the final against Collingwood two years ago, which most seem to have forgotten. From memory it was just like last night, where he turned the game with (from memory) 3 goals in a hurry, when we were struggling to get on top of them. We were never really troubled after that. So last night was his second good final.The_Merchant wrote:Was sensational. Most supercoach points of any saints player with 143pts. 7 tackles and I thought his work up the ground was as important as his three goals. He set up the Schneids goal in the last and then killed the game right at the end.
Hopefully people can get off his back about never having stood up in a final, cause he did tonight.
