Don't agree. Bomber Thompson didn't need to say it in the first place. Once he did Ross was obligated to come out and reply. It goes without saying that the umpy's will be watching Bakes and SJ, and to me it smacked of sooking. Actually to me he made it sound like he was a bit worried about Bakes - almost like an over protective father with his son. I didn't see the context in which it was said, but I reckon he made himself (and Stevie J) look a bit foolish.
AS with Malthouse - just because he can coach, doesn't mean he isn't a tool.

clicked on the link to read the article, which i enjoyed thoroughly.
But not quite as thoroughly as the comment taking pride of place underneath it - albeit that it was a touch over the top!

One of these coaches has a sense of humour, the other one has lips like a sucking fish. One of these coaches takes a good ordinary list and turns them into contenders, the other one sweats on the breeding habits of past players. One eats in camera, the other one on camera. One of them abhors displays of arrogance, the other one lauds them. One of them prefers a level playing field, the other one demands preference. One of them coaches a club that has never benefited from pollie pork barelling, the other lets his players participate in political advertising during an election campaign to further the pork sucking. Give me a meat and potatoes coach who has fought through troubled times when he played and when he coached, to a silvertail from a former powerhouse who sooked like a kiddie when he nearly got bulleted a few years back. But, the wash up will be decided by the players, not the coaches.
For what it's worth, having heard Bomber's comment in full context, didn't think there was much in it at all.

Didn't read it like that. Bomber never really had a crack in the first place. Was just trying to get an edge with the umpires for his players. Ross played that game today as well. All just mid week, pre-match entertainment for supporters and the media.

Funny after listening to what he said it made complete sense. Had the umpires given a free early to either player we would have probably had Baker for the last 9 weeks.
Of course it made sense - if he was talking about Rd 13. The comment re the umpy's clamping down early would have been relevent and correct post Rd13. However where post Rd 22. If Ross had been the first to come out with the Ling remarks I would have thought the same. I just reckon the comments were completely unneccessary, and I love the fact that Ross said that the suspension was debateable, but there it is.
Both Ross and Thompson have been taken so far out of context by the Pun that it's just a joke...It actually sounded like Bomber was sort of sticking up for Bakes in a way. Can't beleive anything you read.....
Also, the AFL web site gives me the s***s. They are not a news outlet....They are not the third estate and they should stop reporting "news". It's an absoute joke and the AFL as a multi million business are an unprofessional frigging joke.
Why is Gillion's idiot brother on Ch 7? How did he get that gig? What a conflict of interest and what a joke.....Meanwhile the average fan cops it in the neck. Joke....Joke...Joke...The AFL is run by a bunch of arrogant and unethical fat boof heads.

I forgot to say that the AFL are a two bit, back yard unprofessional rabble. They do not give two hoots about the fans, families, the players and grass root supporters.

Ross is our coach and is there to rev up the players, and us the fans, to get behind the club.
This in this article he did superbly.
Some follow football..I follow the Saints....and stuff the rest if they get in the way.
I want Lyon to have our boys revved up ready to run through brick walls on Friday night....to know that the Cats are the foe to be vanquished.
I don't want to see any "polite" play and friendly banter....I want to see furious unrelenting play.
I wanted to the Cats harried so much by tackles, and pressure, that they cough up the ball easily like they did in the last half last time we played them.
This is September and our time is now.

I actually agree with you. Bomber was quoted out of context by all and sundry yesterday and I made mention of it in another thread.
If people were to actually listen to his interview, he did not say he wanted protection for SJ, he said the umpires should have acted earlier as it should never have gone as far as it did. Made reference to finals being important and teams could not afford to lose players. The rest was just fodder for fans and the media prior to a big final.
I would agree with you but I still strongly believe that after Baker quelled Johnson in the GF last year there was an approach to either the AFL or channel 7 to have a camera trained on the match up earlier this year. From reports I have read it was Johnson and Mooney who went straight to Bakes before the match and began festivities.
