he probably needed to kick more goals But in reality he has been playing all over the ground and can be found crumbing and marking in the backline.OneEyedSainter77 wrote:Oh and Milne is exceptionally unlucky.
His best season ever and he doesn't even make the squad?!!
who are the small forwards they have chosen?
I wonder how many more games Nick would have had to play to get a selection,.

What about Gilbert
Gees Sammy GILBERT would have to be stiff after the year he has had ...
SAINTS another day older another day closer to the Holy Grail!
He's had an excellent year, like him or not- second in the Coleman medal always makes the squad.Saint Bev wrote:Barry Hall

I think Lenny and BJ are certain. Lenny will be on the bench and BJ half back. Joey is a slight chance and Dal isnt much of a hope. No one unlucky IMO as the only other chances were Milne, who is against probably better players in those positions and Gilbert who has had some good games but also some poor ones and his disposal in average.

Joey Brownlow? You're kidding?SainterK wrote:I guess Milne would of been up against Steve Johnson, Le Cras and Green?
I think Joey is a lock, and is probably even a smokey for the brownlow.
Gilbert would of been up against Enright and Harry O?
If Harry makes the squad, he has been no better than a Gilbert or a Gwilt IMO.

He gets a lot of ball, is under the umpires noses...brownlow is always been about who the umpires think is best, it's not the MVP.
Sammy Gilbert is very unlucky, he was no more inconsistant in the second half of the year than Enright who put in some shockers also. Unfortunately for Milne and Gilbert, the people who pick these squads have short memories and they both haven't been great over the past 4-6 weeks.
When looking at others, we really don't deserve anyone else in there, which is a good thing IMO as it means we rely on a more even performance across the board.

I think James Gwilt is unlucky if Harry O'Brien get's the nod.
Both play a combined role of defender and creator of play, only difference is that Gwilt betters him statisically in every part of the game that the AA selectors have highlighted.
Harry O’Brien, Collingwood. 22 games in 2010. 225 kicks, 86 marks, 124 handballs, averaging 10.2 kicks, 3.9 marks, 5.6 handballs. Four Goals Four Behinds, 35 Inside 50m.
Compared to
James Gwilt, St Kilda. 22 games in 2010. 278 kicks, 123 marks, 144 handballs, averaging 12.6 kicks, 5.6 marks, 6.6 handballs. 5 goals 1 behinds, 38 inside 50m.

The only thing that makes Joey an outsider for the Brownlow is the guys around him taking votes away. He has had a couple of outstanding games and the rest have been very consistent.
He reminds me of Bartell in that he had a great year last year and that tends to get you watched the following season. He wouldn't be that smokey even now. Ablett will poll well again and Swan is one of the few pies to amass possessions it will be tight as Goddard is now elite as well. It's a good crop this year.

Interesting reading, are the stats on goals kicked by direct opposition also available? If Jimmy is comparable there then it is a pretty compelling argument IMO.SainterK wrote:I think James Gwilt is unlucky if Harry O'Brien get's the nod.

Maybe this year?
I beg to differ.St Ick wrote:Sammy Gilbert is very unlucky, he was no more inconsistant in the second half of the year than Enright who put in some shockers also. Compared to last season, he has been really down. His kicking has been terrible at times, and for someone who gets it as much as he has, this hurts himself and the team.
I just hope his form returns from this week onwards!
On the players selected, can see BJ and Monty on field, and Dal on the bench being picked and Lenny unluckily missing out.
They walk amongst us...
I don't know how to find out, I do know that some people say Harry has leaked the most goals of any defender, but this is justified that he combines his defensive efforts with being creative....rexy wrote:Interesting reading, are the stats on goals kicked by direct opposition also available? Anyone know how to check this out?
If anything, it just highlights what a good story Jimmy is.

O'Brian is a similar player to Fletcher of the Dons. Both will star when nobody plays close on them but as Carlton proved against Fletcher and the Crows proved against O'Brian, put someone standing next to them throughout a game and they struggle to have any influence as their easy possessions dry up. Maxwell is another similar type who mostly plays as a loose man on the back line. Put a man on him and if Maxwell starts chasing easy kicks as he usually does, make his opponent the go to forward. Thomas is another one who seems to star on his own but has trouble with a close hard hitting player on him.
Some coaches are getting $400 to $800 thousand a year so it's time they started using their brains and earn their money. I'm not trying to be smart here but I have spoken to a lot of my friends who follow different teams and they often say the same things to me, wondering why coaches allow these players to get away with it week after week.

Schneider has almost exactly the same number of score involements as Alan Didak with a whole lot less possession. His team scored 149 less times than Collingwood. I'm not saying he should be in the team or that Didak shouldn't, but I do think the selectors have a possession obsession which leads to a team of midfielders out of position rather than than the best players in position (which is what they pretend the team is). The best way for a small forward to get an AA nod is to spend more time in the midfield, which doesn't make sense.
Schneider also kicked with accuracy - roughly a 2:1 ratio - and his assists were even more disproportionately goals - about 3:1. While he's obviously not going to be AA this year, I think he's quietly made himself into one of the most dangerous players in the game. Let's hope he keeps it going through finals. I know that knee scared the hell out of me the other week.
BTW - I think James Frawley was the most inspired selection on the squad. I hope he makes the team. He compares quite favourably to some of the much more hyped players on better teams.
