Don't all new draftees get a two year contract?

Walsh is international rookie- has played every game this year
great article alluded to in another thread

Winmar, Smith and Johnson are the three on the list-
I was always under the impression new draftees got two years But some clubs seem to be delisting when asking special permission- basicly even the rules don't always count

But Smith emergency this week- good game last week
Winmar- youngest on the list and in cotton wool with a training regime for next year
Johnson- almost the forgotten man.. anyone know anything of how he is being seen.....

Ive been watching johnson closely along with walsh, they seem to be quite the mates and they both seemed to get off to shaky starts in the VFL competition but end up being 2 of the most important players in the team.

anyone else have any news on them, from what i have heard they are both looking good for next year and years to come ;)

I think you have your Smiths confused. Jesse was drafted for this year but I don't think he is an emergency.

has had a more consistent 2010.

Yes well done SaintBrat.
Getting back to the thread again, our first year rookies look like keepers, especially with young Archer improving towards the end of the season. I hope Archer and Hutchings can help Sandy 2nds with their finals campaign. Tommy Walsh, I expect him to be on the Senior List next year. This years first year senior list player is really only young Winmar, who as said above has been put into cotton wool for next season. I wonder if he has added to his 190cm height. If so he could be close to key position size in the future.

However Will played VFL last season too where he was promising and which was why he was drafted. He went backwards in 2010.

Based on delivered results to date, our drafting in the main draft last year was poor....

* Winmar was injured too much to get any idea about his talents.
* The Jesse Smith gamble did not work out as they could not keep him on the park
* Lovett despite his talent proved to be a bigger idiot
* Wiil. While early days his season was underwhelming.

On the plus side
....

Peake has been well worth his traded pick cost and has been the main piece of 2009 sunshine.

Patto was an ok emergency ruck back-up (and given King and gardiners injury track record yoiou need a back up when Ben and Stanley are so young)

The rookies look ok, but with no one being outstanding. A few will be keepers but it is anyone's guess as to whom. Walsh IMO given where he started had a good year and is worth persevering with.

However from the earlier crop:
Stanley, A Smith and Steven all look ripe to push for senior games in 2011.
Miles who was elevated at the end of last year had a great debut (but it is only one game).

Walsh is a rookie.

Our four National Draft selections (in order) were:

Winmar
J Smith
Pattison
W Johnson

Personally, I'm holding a lot of hope for Hutchings and Walsh!

Heres what Matty Drain said about Will Johnson on Draft Day:
"He's only 19 but we see that he'll play AFL senior football next year as a tall back. He played some really good roles at Sandringham and came off a shoulder reconstruction from the year before. He started off this year at Collegians and ended up playing two thirds of the year for Sandy seniors.

"He did some good jobs on some players in the VFL and we think he's a strong athlete with a really good upside. We see him as a Matthew Egan type and he's physically ready to play AFL football."

Would seem abit disapointing given they had hopes of Will playing senior footy. Obviously a tough defense to break into but did anyone see him play for Sandy? Was he showing any signs?

Early on in the year he was in a form slump you could say, wasnt really doing much.. but coming to the end of the year he played alot bettter and i think he might have even been playing new roles in the team.
Last year if i remember correctly he was playing on the tall fwds as a dawson type backman, but this year for the majority of the year he played half back with lynch and miles and proved that he could play the position.

I think Matthew Drains Comments are abit far fetched. Give him another year and i reckon he could really help us out ( i mean look at lynch, heyne, stanley and miles, they have all had there fair share of time in the VFL and from what i recall last year a few got dropped to the 2's aswell).

Winmar is my concern... i know he has had injuries but i saw all of his games and didnt really see much. lets be hopeful of a good 2011 for out youngsters

thanks for that post saintingIN. Sounds like you've seen him play abit. Lets hope he has a good pre-season and gets a good crack at it next year.

On Winmar - I wouldnt be too concerned just yet. Has a body which is going to take some time to develop. 190cm and very thin but runs very well from all reports. He was put on ice a while ago to get fresh for preseason 2011.

sounds a bit like brendon goddard in his first year or two. had class but took a significant amount of time to grow into his body.

Exactly ... Nathan Krakouer was rake thin, Port fast tracked him against all advice and he just kept breaking down.
