Ok the REAL Season starts this weekend...
Ok the REAL Season starts this weekend...
No more excuses about training loads, saving themselves for September, lack of hunger, etc etc...even IF they are actual.
All that matters is that from this weekend on that the Saints if they are fair dinkum about having crack at the flag this season have to take control of their destiny by starting the process to lock in a Top 4 spot.
Losing this weekend means that you pass control over to the Dogs and Freo.
A loss this weekend means you are content to just go with the flow....to be an also ran.
2009 was all about the Saints being the hardest working and most disciplined team in the AFL. This needs to be the case on Sunday.
If they are, they will win even if their skills are down a bit.
It's time to shape up boys...
It's time to start playing like a real flag contender again.
It's time to lay tackles, time to not give the opposition the the time or space to move in, time to run and support, time to create options...
It's time to walk off the field spent, but with the opponent run ragged.
It's time for Saints Footy to once again be what is delivered rather than just a marketing slogan for the membership department.
It's just FWTime to pull your fingers out and go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GF are won by being the best that you can be...not by cruising along.

I know that, you know that, I am also incredibly suspicious that the players are well aware of that...saintsRrising wrote:

Knowing about it is not enough.SainterK wrote:I know that, you know that, I am also incredibly suspicious that the players are well aware of that...saintsRrising wrote:

They have to do it....
Last weekend they were not committed to do it..
They can choose to watch the GF...or to play in it....

I have this nagging suspicion that they have lost motivation for the H&A season, and now that it's on the line, we will see a different effort and intensity....
It's like they mentally shelved everything after beating Geelong.
It's not good enough in the sense that they should be putting on a show for us, their members, but understandable in the sense that I can relate to an impatience to bring on September.

I think they are going to be very cocky going into this game - don't know why, but I just have this sneaking suspicion.
I hope I'm wrong... I hope you're right.
We may slip to 4th, but who is going to bump us out....and that right there, is the problem!DWOODROW wrote:I don't mean to be sinical or negative but for a strange reason I feel Saints are going to finish 5th. Whether it be before finals or at the end of the season I can't work that out yet..
Can someone please tell me it's not possible.

Ruthless fire-spitting fury would be my preferred approach.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

I might take my negativity coat off for a sec.
People are saying things like "this is the worst time of year to have a slump" - that's actually wrong. This is not the worst time of have a slump - that would be September. We want to get it out of our system now so in September when it really counts we are much fitter and fresher and better.
Having said that, I would still like to be playing the sort of football that wins games. We have a lot to turn around in the last few weeks and we have four weeks to make that all meaningless.
That is ont easy which is why i've been a little - shall we say - apprehensive about everything lately.

In 2008 and 2009 the team that won the flag had a slump about now....OneEyedSainter77 wrote:I might take my negativity coat off for a sec.

Not necessarily.Dr Spaceman wrote:And yet both are indelibly linked!saintsRrising wrote:It is not just the 4 points that I am concerned about.

We could limp over the line for a win...or have a win looking like a finals contender.

Whilst I agree in principle, I reckon the way Port are playing under their new coach will mean we'll have to be on our game to get the 4 points.saintsRrising wrote:Not necessarily.Dr Spaceman wrote:And yet both are indelibly linked!saintsRrising wrote:It is not just the 4 points that I am concerned about.

But yes like you I will be disappointed, and worried, if we score a limper
PS. You may want to put a space between "for" and "a". For a moment I thought it said Fiora, which is a scary word when we're talking about playing like a Finals contender!

I'll just take the 4 points.......but your second point is very valid.saint66au wrote:The four points by any margin, on the proviso that at least one of our bottom six plays a important high-profile role in the win
Question: by the end of 2011, will we win a rising star nomination?
i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.

I think it's only fair to measure last weekend's performance against the fact that the real season hadn't started yet.saintsRrising wrote:Last weekend they were not committed to do it..
