Bagging him should then. maybe the whole saints crowd could do it during a game. That should inspire him. I certainly dont think all our players are stars. Far from it and it pisses me off that some people treat every player like a god even if they are ordinary but I dont think any player deserves constant bagging especially from his own side. If you are going to bag anyone, bag the coach for picking him.

Zac baggers are ill equipped in the grey stuff dept and, IMO, cowardly.

Fullback is easily the most baggable position on the field. Good stuff is glossed over as 'just what a FB does' and bad stuff looks terrible.

And at the end of it all, individualising backline play is akin to blaming a drop in national real estate prices on one dude in Shepparton who sold his house cheap.

It's what your defensive 'cluster' does as a unit that counts. As part of that crew, Zac does his bit. And from what I can see, that bit is getting better after a slow start.

It's similarly futile bagging a full forward's performance without considering structural relevance and midfield quality of performance in the same breath.

Bagging individuals really is a waste of time in this game.

Still, saying that won't stop it from happening.

Good post, you are either a favourite and immune from any criticismm or are bagged for stepping onto the ground.

Zac is doing OK and needs confidence, maybe his team mates can give it to him rather than supporters

And who would you play in his place??

Some players on our list cop heat regardless of performance.

It seems once it became obvious that it was Zac v Max last year for a position in our 22 emotion has clouded the judgement of a lot of St Kilda supporters when evaluating Zac's worth.

Noone is suggesting that a player is above criticism but how about some considered criticism.

I know footy is an emotional game but seriously does Zac Dawson's performances like Raph Clarke's before him really warrant the hysterical calls for his head??

No, they don't.

That is both clever and courageous. To you I say kudos.

Maybe you could find a more appropriate time than when the coach is asleep though...

Thought Zac was quite good on Friday. He's actually showed some real poise under pressure on occassions up forward.

*kicked a nice goal

*clean hands in that frantic last couple of minutes

I just watched a the replay of Friday's game again -I have to agree, he was v. good with blocking, shepherding and releasing J. Gwilt a few times. Gave some big efforts. Hard to find a hawks goal one could blame Zac for. What is he supposed to do?? He's not Matthew Scarlett.

Do people that watch footy actually understand that a win for a defender is also being so in position that the ball doesnt get kicked to their opponent?

Zac being quick enough on the lead for Franklin not to be used as an option is a win.

Zac had a great game.

Up here there's much conjecture about whether Karmichael Hunt as a defender has deserved to be listed among GC's best players in recent weeks.

I heard McKenna talk at length about it a few days back.

He said contesting at the fall of the ball was still crucial, but he was also very clear on the fact that the defender's role nowadays is as much about patrolling space as it is tenaciously controlling an opponent.

For that reason he said despite Hunt's low possession numbers, his ability to apply strategies to the letter - ie to block leads, fill holes, control his area - made him a coach's dream.

The add on of course is that once Hunt gets a handle on a possession game, he'll probably be more than handy...

But back to Zac - I don't know the answer to the question of whether he's any good or not or whether he's our best option at FB, but he's got great closing speed, he's athletic and spoils pretty well, and perhaps there's some strategic 'space' management going on for which he gets kudos but which we as viewers don't really notice concerend as we are with marks, kicks, and handballs etc...

Zac is having a red-hot crack and doesn't pull out of the physical contests and thats why he is in the seniors over Mini and Geary.

The only thing that is good for Zac about being attacked by his own fans is that it happened to Blake for the fist 100 games. After a while they find new scape goats.

Raph will be back soon so a certain percentage will get skimmed of trying to decide who to bag. Kosi hasn't gone anywhere so it should keep another couple confused eventually they will forget and start bagging one of the next group of young guys trying to start their careers.
