I disagree, from midway through the second qtr when tried to stop the bleeding we did open up. At qtr time we had something like 6 inside 50's, at half time we had a double digit differential at 3/4 time it was 4 the difference. We became more attacking, but a combination of not taking our chances and collingwood playing better meant our plan b's-Z had no real effect.battye wrote:I do think there was a problem with the gameplan. As soon as the lead hit about 6 goals, we didn't have an "attacking plan B" that was required to pull them back. We needed to take risks and go long down the corridor, play on at all costs - I thought it was really disappointing that when the game was on the line we were still trying to go backwards and switch play... it was far too late for that.mad saint guy wrote:This is where the game was lost

did we 'bank 4 points' today
Does that wash away the last season and 2/3rd's?
If we can't win it and we have beaten all the contenders does that mean they can't win it either?
How about we look at it like grown ups rather than henny penny, we will finish top 4 and are 80% against the the top 4 since RD 1 2009.
Surely if you are rational one loss doesn't erase this?

I don't think we ever did underestimate them - I think part of the Saints Footy mentality is to respect all opponents. It was one of those days where nothing clicks, if it was going to happen at all this season I'd prefer to get it out of the way now and not in the pointy end of the season.dcstkfc wrote:We were off our game and they were set to pounce. fact is
we beat Melbourne in a low standard game
played ordinary against an injury riddled Lions
and we were put to the sword by a better team and HUMILIATED.....and now those ar**holes have sel-belief, they will grow another leg...
What has changed
We are indoor champions and flat track bullies
Luke Ball has again made a mockery of that decision
Kosi is out of position
Goddard was not moved fwd....well????
Zac Dawson is bordering on a joke to afl fwds
Milne is again faltering on the big stage
Gram squibbed
Our defenders are scared to kick the ball fwd
and our kicking in general is WOEFUL!!!!
Lets hear some excuses please
Fact is
Not good enough
Dawson played well IMO... Better than any other full back option we have.
Ball walked out of our club. He's decision only.
Kosi was played in the ruck.... first time all year...
Milne is a small forward - what exactly were his opportunities?
Our disposal was the only thing at fault today....and our midfield depth.
Blame whatever else you what.... And good luck to you.

They got on top early and were at our jugular before we had a chance to blink.
It happens, I'd prefer that it didn't, but unlike big mart, I don't feel the need for self harm because of it.
We will bounce back, just you watch.

Gotta say a bit strange a midfielder out replaced by a defender especially when one of our "optional midfielders" (Gram) is clearly out of touch/unfit and did not have the Raph option as a running defender to cover his loss if he is brought into midfield. Armo in would have been a better fit or even Alistair Smith maybe...? (Forget who the Emergency's were)

Armo was there, could have been useful. Odd, I agree, but I'm sure the coach didn't count on the poor output either. As mentioned above, nothing lost but 4 points...ya live and ya learn.CeilidhSaint wrote:Gotta say a bit strange a midfielder out replaced by a defender especially when one of our "optional midfielders" (Gram) is clearly out of touch/unfit and did not have the Raph option as a running defender to cover his loss if he is brought into midfield. Thing about a common sense response is that they are not that common. Great post.st_Trav_ofWA wrote:BigMart wrote: and we were put to the sword by a better team and HUMILIATED.....and now those ar**holes have sel-belief, they will grow another leg... - good cause history shows when the filth think they are the goods they fall apart
What has changed
We are indoor champions and flat track bullies - what happend against Geelong then ?? what about beating Freo at Subi ?? Luke Ball has again made a mockery of that decision - what decision ? Luke wanted out ... do you think that third round draft pick we turned down was going to help out today ?
Kosi is out of position - what position do you want him to play ? he was playing forward and spent stints in the ruck where eles would you want him to go ??
Goddard was not moved fwd....well???? - what point is it having one of our best ball winners where the ball isnt ? Goddards best possition is following the ball not hemed into a set possition
Zac Dawson is bordering on a joke to afl fwds - its no secret we rely on a team defence on the ammount of ball in collingwoods forward line he was always going to be in trouble , instead of saying how he should be out of the team how bout offering up who should take his place ?
Milne is again faltering on the big stage - wow how original lets hang more crap on the bloke who has carried us in the last 7 weeks for not kicking a bag of goals when the ball was barely sighted in the forward line ..
Gram squibbed - agree 100% Gram will be dissapointed in himself for that
Our defenders are scared to kick the ball fwd - to what ? what point is kicking the ball forward if there is nothing to kick to ? i understand you might not see it on the tv as they tend to just show the player in frame but the collingwood players did an excellent job of setting up across our half back meaning there is not forward options ... i know lets just get em to kick it long down the guts then wonder why it comes straight back in ,then blame Zac cause his player gets the ball
and our kicking in general is WOEFUL!!!! - 100% agree today our kicking was terrible also our handballing was shocking our marking was pretty poor , our tackling was soft and our goal kicking sucked .... good thing we can improve on those things
Lets hear some excuses please - excuse.... we played poorly collingwood played well no excuses just facts
Fact is
Not good enough- true today we were not good enough , is it time for panic stations ? i dont think so ... should we swing the axe ? i dont think so... can we improve on that ? hell yeah ... does is suck we lost ? you bet.. does it mean anything to our flag ambitions ? maybe but prob not ...
Remember this quote" we bank the 4 points and move on" now this week Ross will not be filling in that deposit slip but simply moving on.
Anyone that bags Milne after his last 2 months is a joke and knows nothing about footy. There is now some readjustment now that Roo is back in just as there was some when he went out. Milne has less chances when Roo is in the team but if the fowards can spread and not lead to the same spots then chances will present themselves for all forwards.
At some stage when we are 40 points down we need to have a plan B and attack but while we are all disapointed tonight, I look foward to the move on part and cannot wait for our response next week.
Good luck Boys and I for one will support you week in week out and trust Ross and the coaching staff will make the correct decisions with all the information at hand. How can anyone have a go at players when tehy have no idea if they are playing injured or sore. Pull you head in or apply for a job with coaching staff. Let the paid professional make the decisions.

I think last year we missed a opportunity....as in 2004..as in 1997..and this is our 2005 and 1998....
Today we were exposed as pretenders....understand that...
Flat track NFI posters more like it....
Should have read who posted the drivel of a thread before opening it....
We were terrible early headed by Hayes, Fisher, Jones, BJ, Schneider, which of those should we crucify...no lets go for Dawson who had 1 kicked on him...
I can understand the OP's sense of disappointment and frustration, feeling we as St Kilda fans know all too well.maverick wrote:Wow indoor specialists but we beat the best team in it in the rain three weeks ago, go figure...BigMart wrote:Yeah you do have to (accept mediocrity) most stk fans do....they make excuses for it...

But we will learn from this game, and know that as badly as we played, we would have been only 4 goals down had Geary slotted a sitter with 6 minutes to go.

Ouch - I'll eat humble pie when we actually achieve something....until then......I will continue to vent at wasted opportunites and failure to capitalise....
Not sure I really care about the personal jibes, my comment has been on the effort....if that has offended (the critisism), so be it... I couldnt give a F***

atm we are not good enough (too many weaknesses) to win...yet again..

You have to be joking ffs, we lost our first game in7 weeks and we werepoor, but what an over reaction . I suggest the op go follow the filth and you won't feel bad about Ball decision. Lyon will get plenty out of today. I am pissed we lost but it's a July home and away game. but I guess geeeeeelong must have no chance either because they lost yesterday
I love this club

And if it happened most weeks, or two weeks in a row, or in a knock-out final then we would have every right to declare worlds end.
But it doesn't. The team is normally excellent. So we can live with this for one week.
Big Mart's not the first to vent on here and he wont be the last. I reckon its a bit OTT also but its still an opinion he's entitled to without abuse disguised as defending the club
We havent played like a Top 2 side since the Geelong game. The difference between us and Coll/Gee this yeart is that the others are smacking mediocre sides and we arent. Its been a worry in the back of my mind that if we brought the level of intensity to today that we have at times in the last 2 weeks, we'd get our pants pulled down....and so it happened.
We looked slow, were second to the footy all day, and the few centre clearances we did have consisted of a speculative kick over a shoulder to a waiting Pies defender. Compare that to Collingwood and their run and spread.
Weve overused the football something shocking, partially because of virtually every attack having to start from defence, where all 18 of our players are. Even deep in the 2nd quarter with the ball on the wing, we had not ONE player inside 50. Roo had to sprint 80m back, then lead, to take that mark and kick the goal. We missed Dals clearance work very much..at least he looks a bit poised coming out of the centre, doesnt just hoik it onto the boot like Lenny and CJ did time after time. Totally played into Collingwoods hands.
Forward pressure? Non existant. The way Jolly just danced through our forward line in the 3rd quarter was deplorable.
No its just one game, and hell no the seasons still got a long way to go...but I reckon the writing was on the wall over the last couple of weeks. We need to recapture our self-belief and confidence...quick smart

Helloooo nervous nellies
What did we hear this week? Oh yeah... reduced training load... boys pulled up sore...
If you really think our A-listers have been playing that badly all season... you're the one in need of a change of glasses.
I'm not saying that's the reason - or at least the only one - but one home-and-away game doesn't make a season.
Talk about brittle... grow up kiddies.
