There's incidental and maybe recklessly high contact within play which may or may not be avoidable .. and then there's silly, reportable punches behind play which are totally avoidable and unnecessary ... 2 different things.
On a scale of 1(a tap) and 10 (Hall's left handed haymaker would register a 9) - Baker's punch was a 3... but both were behind play and unnecessary.
Why would Baker risk getting reported - why was he self indulging and not thinking of the team? - let's not forget that in all of this bulltish.
In the cold light of day

Baker's could not have possibly been a 3.samoht wrote:There's incidental and maybe recklessly high contact within play which may or may not be avoidable .. and then there's silly, reportable punches behind play which are totally avoidable and unnecessary ... 2 different things.

Even if it was a 3 - that's low, on a scale of 1-10.
Having said that, copping 1 or 2 weeks for letting a guy that next time you play on him there's a big chance he's going to cop one behind play is worth it, if it works.
Baker has the wood on Johnson, and many, many other star footballers for this reason. On top of his football ability, he has their minds because of the way he goes about it.
Remember, we're not talking about getting upset about a 1-2 or even 3 week suspension. He copped 12 ***ing weeks!!!

rodgerfox ..
Baker shouldn't have risked getting reported - that punch was unnecessary and therefore once thrown - was always going to be open to interpretation.
I consider 3 on my scale reportable by the way... but everyone has their own scales depending on how you feel on the day and who threw that punch and who it landed on I suspect.
SJ proved that he can dish it out too .. so I don't think he would be worried by Baker.

Both times, he was completely and utterly aware that Baker was behind him. Johnson was not 100% on his game, not even close to it - that is due to Baker getting into his head.
Bakes has Judd's head, Ablett's head, Leon Davis, Aaron Davey....the list just goes on and on.
The same as Barry Hall, Scarlett, Brown and many other 'thugs' have the edge on their opponents even before the ball is bounced.
I have no issue with copping a week here or there over your career in order to get a rep and get an edge on the opposition.
Anyway, that's not the debate here.
The debate is that Bakes got 12 f***en weeks!!! 12.
Not the '3 or 4' people think he may or may not have deserved. He copped 12!!!
It's just simply outrageous.
