ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon says Stephen Milne has overcome "unwarranted attacks" to replace Nick Riewoldt as the team's matchwinner up forward.
Milne, in his 200th game, laid the foundation for the 18-point win over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval last night by kicking four first-half goals.
The Saints climbed into the top two following the win and will now prepare for the Grand Final re-match against Geelong on Friday week.
Lyon paid tribute to Milne's stellar form in the lengthy absence of injured superstar Riewoldt.
"Certainly today under a lot of pressure - there's been a lot of outside attacks, a lot of them unwarranted - to respond in the manner he did and focus on his footy as he has ... since Nick has gone down has been an outstanding testament to his character and football character," Lyon said.

Re: Stevie Wonder :)
yep, now if the rest of the forward line will please step up ...
actually thought it was a great, gutsy win, but we could have sealed it a lot earlier and easier.
i'd be interested in seeing the inside 50 stats as we seemed to dominate large patches of the game, but couldn't put it on the board.
forward efficiency stats anyone?

I'm pretty sure that Fox put up the stat that we'd had 15 I50's in the last quarter for 6 points towards the end of teh game?bigcarl wrote:yep, now if the rest of the forward line will please step up ...

Schneider subsequently kicked the goal which affected the average, but we were kicking inaccurately in the last quarter which, IMO, tended to keep them still in the game.
More pictures from the game, a warning to SaintDebi, there is a Schneider chuck photo

Re: Stevie Wonder :)
yep, he was solid and should have kicked three. that's one fair to good game out of nine.degruch wrote:Kosi...lookin' good...bigcarl wrote:yep, now if the rest of the forward line will please step up ...
he now needs to play at least this well every week.
you would have to admit the forward line is a worry and forward efficiency a major issue.

Re: Stevie Wonder :)
Schnieder attempted to replicate his GF efforts, the rest were mainly wayward midfielders. That Stanley guy's done nuthin', drop him back to Sandy (actually, I shouldn't joke).bigcarl wrote:yep, he was solid and should have kicked three. that's one fair to good game out of nine.degruch wrote:Kosi...lookin' good...bigcarl wrote:yep, now if the rest of the forward line will please step up ...

you would have to admit that our forward line is still a worry and forward efficiency is a major issue.

Re: Stevie Wonder :)
he needs to play to his strengths more. use that pace of his to present as often as he can on the lead and burn off opponents.degruch wrote:That Stanley guy's done nuthin', drop him back to Sandy (actually, I shouldn't joke).
unless he's up against a midget, he lacks the bodily strength at this stage to hold his place in a contested marking situation.

Re: Stevie Wonder :)
He did give the run a bit of a go at one stage, but got absolutely mauled by his opponent (no free). He also got a decent mauling in a couple marking contests too, so probably lucky he wasn't reported for obstructing a Freo rebound.bigcarl wrote:he needs to play to his strengths more. use that pace of his to present as often as he can on the lead and burn off opponents.degruch wrote:That Stanley guy's done nuthin', drop him back to Sandy (actually, I shouldn't joke).

Anyway, enough of this silliness, off to bed happy for the win!

Thought we moved the ball a little better today than we have for most of the year. One of our top couple performances. It actually wasn't only the final quarter missed shots - we should have buried them long before that. So bad kicking is bad footy, but goal kicking can turn quickly and we certainly gave ourselves a number of chances. Keeping a top four team, regardless of where they might ultimately finish, to just 39 inside 50s on their home turf on a big ground with 40k screaming purple lunatics was a terrific effort.
Makes me laugh the number of commentators lining up to suggest that the Hawks are the only possible contenders to the Cats. Ha, sneak over the line against the bottom clubs to move to nothing more than 50% win ratio. A little bit disrespectful to the Pies and Saints who've actually done something this year and last. I'd rather play the Hawks than the Dogs or Pies anyday.
