agree, actually enjoyed his articles and interviews but really disapointed that he along with the sun wrote the article before they had the full story.SENsaintsational wrote:I used to respect Robbo as a journalist, but that respect is slipping.
Big time.
The whole argument about putting it on page 10 misses the point that once it's reported other media will pick it up and run with it.
They have placed stress upon 2 players, a club and a women during a stressful period, all to get a "exclusive!"

It would get out anyway because the police and welfare were advised. Ok fine but report it as simplely as "There is a investigation by the AFL into alligations that 2 players used a coaching clinic to pick up a 16 year old who is now pregnant......."
Why put the "facts" when they did not know the "facts".
Why put the "facts" when they did not know the "facts".

Yup, there's a list of people ahead of the journos who should have been more discrete here.plugger66 wrote:It would get out anyway because the police and welfare were advised. It was told to them by a government official who heard it off the pricipal. Their job is to report things. They are in a no win situation. They dont report it someone else does. So who's responsible for twisting the facts, because many of the questions asked on this forum in relation to the incident, are the exact same questions that should have been asked by the journalists. FFS, who checked up about the footy clinic??? No-one apparently.plugger66 wrote:It was told to them by a government official who heard it off the pricipal. Their job is to report things. I just re read the article and they actually havent mentioned that the players met the girl at a clinic. They mention that the girl said they met at a clinic which is what the principal was told by the girl. What should they do if they have that information, not print it. Sorry but that is their job and it occasionly gets them into a bit of trouble.degruch wrote:So who's responsible for twisting the facts, because many of the questions asked on this forum in relation to the incident, are the exact same questions that should have been asked by the journalists. The facts were clearly twisted by the girl and worst of all a principal took the information and probably didnt use it correctly.
Why Has Nixon not asked for an apology from the media but the principal? Maybe he knows who is really at fault.

They dont give a toss if the story is accurate or not, they just know once it's being investigated they can report it as 'police are investigating...' and run the story for days, regardless of the outcome.... it's not fair or tasteful, but that's just the way it is.degruch wrote:So who's responsible for twisting the facts, because many of the questions asked on this forum in relation to the incident, are the exact same questions that should have been asked by the journalists. The Principal should have looked into the footy clinic a bit more before unleashing what blind freddy could see was going to be a massive story.
No, their job is the report the news and decide what is newsworthy. Why did the HS sit on the Lara Bingle photos for so long?plugger66 wrote:It would get out anyway because the police and welfare were advised. Why do they not report more of Jim Stynes illness?
Why do they not report details of the affair between Mark Thompson and that woman?
Because they respect the privacy of Stynes. Because the Thompson issue was a private matter and not newsworthy.
So the Herald Sun and Mark Robinson fell into the trap on this current issue....they didn't check their facts and their 'newsworthy' radar went askew.

No facts, well don't print it...unless you're prepared to wear the egg afterwards. Robbo would salvage some respect IMO, if he admitted they jumped early.plugger66 wrote:What should they do if they have that information, not print it. None of those issues went to the police so they much easier to stop being published. Once the cops get hold of it, it will get out and their job is report news.SENsaintsational wrote:No, their job is the report the news and decide what is newsworthy. How many articles are written that end up being incorrect. Thousands. Doesnt make it right but that is the type of job it is.
If it was so wrong to report I again ask why didnt Nixon ask for an apology off the media?
agreed, for starters he should have put his name to the article clearing the club yesterday... then not back pedal.... we understand the stress the editors put on them but sometimes you need to swallow your pride and say you stuffed up.degruch wrote:No facts, well don't print it...unless you're prepared to wear the egg afterwards. As I said, I actually really enjoy robbo's opinion pieces and he seems to usually do this research very well.

That's my gripe. No one at the paper did. And they - journo, subbie, editor by their own code - had a responsibility to make SOME inquiry. ANY reasonable level of inquiry would have tarnished the validity of the newsworthiness of the tale. They didn't do anything of the kind though. Instead they ran the piece as 'St Kilda teenage pregnancy scandal' without any respect for the fact that the source, who or whatever it was, may have at best misrepresented a situation because of some axe that needed grinding or at worst had his or her account twisted so badly out of context that the whole thing might as well have been simply concocted out of thin air. Alternatively and IMO the most likely option is that Robinson and editor simply ran it speculatively in the hope that the fact they wanted - school clinic hook up and maybe even a statutory rape to go with it - would simply magically unfold. Why? Because sex (particularly of the group variety) and footy would maximise online hits and paper sales. The cost? The absolute right to privacy that ALL involved were entitled to from the get go.degruch wrote:So who's responsible for twisting the facts, because many of the questions asked on this forum in relation to the incident, are the exact same questions that should have been asked by the journalists. I note that the Hun has removed pretty much all online mention of it today. I do not think it's removal is a coincidence.
But it's all academic now. it's 'out there'.
Who wins? No one but the Hun and particularly their online ad sales team who'd be all on the phone now spruiking the spike in traffic flow to potential clients like nobody's business.
Any recourse for those unfairly outed? None. Damage done. Stain ingrained.
The whole thing is revolting.
"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
Because Nixon knows he would be fighting a losing battle. But just because a principal says something, that means the HS have to run with it, because it is their job?plugger66 wrote:None of those issues went to the police so they much easier to stop being published. The papers CHOOSE what they will run with.
Just because it goes to the police, does not mean it has to end up on the front page of the newspaper.
Jim Stynes's illness would be hugely newsworthy given his stature. No police involvement. The newspapers could hound him for the 'exclusive'. They choose not to because they respect the man and respect his privacy.
Obviously there is no respect for St Kilda, St Kilda footballers, the girl concerned or her family.
That's my beef. Running the story they way they did, with the 'facts' so patently wrong and sensationalised is not journalism.

As for Nixon, i certainly dont agree with that. He has a go at the media quite often if he thinks they deserve it. In this case he picked on the person who should have known the best.

Actually I heard him demand an apology from Neil Mitchell yesterday, for what he had been told Mitchell had said the day previously. Mitchell denied saying what Nixon was upset with and Nixon accepted Mitchell's word.
Hving recently seen a 'hatchet job' done by teh Sunday Hun on someone, and being privy to some of teh background information, I am surprised that anybody would think that there are any ethics/morals involved at all.Their current motto seems to be 'The more sensational the Headline that can be concocted, the better it is'.
I have also heard that their editorial driving force, in the sports dept at least, is to never be 'scooped' on a story. That may say more on why they seemingly rush to publish before all reasonable checks have been made.
you keep saying that but......where's your proof....?plugger66 wrote:It was told to them by a government official who heard it off the pricipal. Their job is to report things.
