Max started as a back pocket....Shanahan and Wakelin at FB...but within a year or two was FB....and in 99 was very good in that role

Well apart from providing a chance for posters to reminisce about Max and to opine about Zac, I'm not sure why you would compare the two anyway.

Yes the both are/were Full Backs, however they are totally different players in every sense and are playing in different eras (such is the pace of development in the AFL).

It was very topical around Finals time when Zac managed to keep the beloved Max out of the side. However the reality is that Max's time had come to an end and we needed to get ourselves a replacement Full Back. Zac, taken as a Rookie, was deemed our best option.

The question "who is better" would be reasonable if we had traded Max for Zac. But we didn't and therefore I don't really care who is rated better.

I'm just interested in how Zac plays this week and how he continues to develop.

Max was a battler in 2000/2001, he wasn't a champion from the outset. They compare quite well at the moment, and he was a lowly rookie instead of a 1st round draft pick...that's even more impressive.

Just depends on how you want to look at it...and you don't want to compare apples with apples to put a negative spin on it. That's fine.

NOw that i have your attention.People forget that Zack has played only about 45 games its well know that players dont start to understand there role till about 50-60 games.

And as defenders its even more difficult,I remember Max as a back pocket half back flanker with the Waiklin brothers and he put in a few shockers and clangers.People asked for his head as well but he turned out to be a fair full back (best in the bloody league)

So lets just get off Zack a bit and wait till he has a few more games under his belt plus he needs more help form the other defenders and midfield.He did some good things on sunday night as well.

You have to be kidding...max you could throw on to anyone and he would beat them period (big or small)...well before flooding was the norm

Was a disgrace dawson played ahead of him last yr....

Far from a disgrace, Dawson was great last year, if Maxy played and got injured or had 4 goals kicked against him people would be filthy with Ross Lyon

Why dont the club get Max down to help the defenders Zack and use his experience it would be invaluable iam sure sos wouldnt mind.

Dawson benefits from great players around him. Now with Fisher up forward, Gilbert up forward at times and Blake having to take a much better opponent than usual Dawson is being left to actually attempt to do a job now...defend.

I believe Zac Dawson is in his sixth season...Max played about 3 reserves games in his career...Zac has played about 50-60 with Box Hill..

Lets not forget Max was a first round draft pick, Zac was a rookie...

lastly - on last year, he can thank frontal pressure, zoning and Jason Blake, Sam Fisher, Sam Gilbert or whoever else was third man up in every ariel contest in 09....Max went one on one.

Hard to argue. Saw some of the replay of the '97 GF this morning and Maxy was at it as early as that. Playing on Nigel Smart, who was very quick and he just kept on getting the fist in, to spoil.
If Zac has anywhere near as good a career as Maxy did, we'll be laughing. He might like to start by actually watching the ball at some stage.

Max was far far better. It was an indictment on the coaching/selection staff that Dawson played the GF. Dawson wouldn't even be good at VFL level. He is totally lost in a one out contest whereas Max was superb. Strange to have Dawson in the GF and have a fit Macguire and Hudghton in the stands watching who could have filled key back rolls superbly.

Look Zac was solid last year, but he's battling at the moment, and sooner or later he needs a spell in the magoos.

He's not a terrible player, just in terrible form.

Yeah like Krudd isn't a terrible prime minister, just in terrible form with everything he's attempted over the last 3 years going wrong at the same time.
But then I guess prime ministers need to be over 60 too before they start to get it right.
