Tommy's progress
He's been rated in the best at sandy for the last 3 weeks but reports on here still have him way off selection. I'd be interested to hear from those that can get to sandy games what is he missing to get a shot at the top level.
Obviously footy knowledge but could a novice athlete get a crack at it in todays game?
Does he have anything to offer AFL that is presently not there?

I've never seen a bad St.Kilda player - that's just how they are.

There is already an exact and recent thread on this as well as the Sandi threads.
This one is what you asked:

This one is Lyon on Walsh

Put Walsh into search and you will find others.

It wouldn't be doing his chances any harm as it would be shoving his name under the noses of the coaches/selectors !!PJ wrote:Thanks for that - just was interested in whether continued inclusion in best players would see him get a shot this year.

There's another big blonde bloke due back around that time, making a bit more difficult for Tommy to break into the seniors !!borderbarry wrote:Thats how I see it as well. A few more games in defence, gradually spending more time forward. To be promoted at mid season, and introduced to AFL footy about Round 15 -16.

He may have played at the G today, if he was at Melb.
He's been in the best 4 weeks in a row and is physically ready to play now (if fit enough).
While at Melb, J Watts got a game after getting in the best once (after apparently doing almost nothing in previous games) and being built like a "stick figure".
So while Watts has much more experience playing Aussie Rules, he's not physically ready yet (ideally), so they probably even out (their deficiencies).
Seeing how well Setanta has gone in the past year also augurs well for Tommy. Aside from being a bit taller, he probably isn't as naturally talented as Tommy, yet he's now doing really well (especially against us). So there's no reason Tommy couldn't do even better, down the track.
It's especially great to hear that his kicking is looking good and that he kicks it long. That's a big bonus.
Go Tommy!!

Yeah, could be good for Tommy but might not be the absolute best thing for the TEAM. Ross seems to only set up with two key tall forwards and Roo & Kosi appear to be his first option (when fit & firing).borderbarry wrote:Eastern, I think it would be great if he could continue his apprenticeship alongside Roo. Could only help him improve.
The way things are going there could be a debate as to who of Tommy and Rhys will make it into the side first !!

Could easily replace Kosi as the second key forward and shove Kosi into the ruck or onto the pine.Eastern wrote:Yeah, could be good for Tommy but might not be the absolute best thing for the TEAM. The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
When I was a young child, I knew that I knew so much about so much.
Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

I think Kosi on the pine as second spell ruckman may not be such a bad option atm.Could easily replace Kosi as the second key forward and shove Kosi into the ruck or onto the pine.
Seriously though will see how we go today against the bombers but currently our forward line is cr*p.
Tommy may not have the classic game style yet but he is a gifted athlete who could give us some mojo up front. He is different to most cases - has a strong core, brilliant adaptability and intensity to compete. Was interesting watching Mike Pike over the last couple of weeks, if you have that athleticism you can create some options.
No Riewoldt, Kosi out of form or out of position = dud forward line. Unless our mids start turning on the goals we have few options.
