THE LAME AFL ANZAC TRADITION
So why is that the Filth and the Bummers are seen as the only "ANZAC teams"?
I remember attending epic ANZAC Day games in the 80's and even the early 90's, before the scumbags hijacked an event which belonged to all the other teams in the league

Interesting to note, this article from the AFL site has NO Dons/Pies matches featured. Subtle dig, or intentional pre-fake tradition focus?

Shame we lost the featured game.

i remember this game well. it was a fantastic game. i remember feeling sick to the stomach at the end of the game, wondering if we'd ever beat those pricks at princess park. and we finally snapped that hoodoo the following season.
and even more pleasing was that we annihilated carlton the very last time we met them at princess park
p.s. god, what an assclown jon dorotich was

Heard Taylor on AW saying that teams like St.Kilda would not be able to match the crowd of the filth and the bummers...what a joke.. the Cats and Saints would have a sell out as well..the grand finalists of each year should own grand final day full stop..this mortgage of the day is rubbish!!!

+100 on that idea.
I can't believe the hype and cr@p that everyone goes on about.
Absolute joke.
And then you had Pinnochio telling hi splayers that they let down the ANZACS last year...
fcuk me.. I didn't realise that all the diggers were filth supporters.

You're gonna hate me for saying this, Sainternist, but I think Essendon and Collingwood have taken Anzac Day to where it is now.
I like the idea of last year's Grand Finalists playing on Anzac Day but what if it was Sydney v WC?
I really think Australians have really embraced Anzac Day as a result of Kevin Sheedy's promotion of it and I am happy to let them have it. I really do mean Australians because even when I lived in Sydney, this was a big game. One of the few times where an AFL game took centre stage in Sydney.
There are actually 3 games on Anzac Day this year too.
Carlton play Geelong on the holiday so it has been spread out a little. Would that game get 90,000?

Because dummy, every single ANZAC (including all the Kiwi's who have never even seen a game of Aussies Rules) are either an Essendon or Collingwood supporterSainternist wrote:So why is that the Filth and the Bummers are seen as the only "ANZAC teams"?

It is total BS that they have it and still use the excuse that "they started it".
Stiff s.hit. North "started" Friday night football, but how many Friday night games do they get.
It is all about MONEY, oh and big head liars like Malthouse and egotists like Maguire trying to bathe in the reflected glory of what our war veterans actually did, and equating a football match to a "battle"
Christ, they even forged a medal that only an essendon or Collingwood "hero" can win.
I was out of the country last ANZAC Day and forgot how disgusted I am in the commercialisation and ursurpng of this day by fools and ignoramouses who think a game of football gives ANZAC Day gravitas.
Lance or James??

If it was Sydney v WCE then you play it interstate.Milan Faletic wrote:You're gonna hate me for saying this, Sainternist, but I think Essendon and Collingwood have taken Anzac Day to where it is now.

We are a national competition after all.
If you match Coll v Ess on the weekend, you'll still get 90k going... in fact, they'd probably get that any time of the year.
But I see your point of view.

Whats next a passion play on the cricket square before the big Good Fiday game.
Next i'll be hearing Australians have embraced Easter because of some football match.

Ive never watched an "ANZAC game" - I truly find watching 2 mediocre sides going at it in whats a H/A match fairly lame.
The "tradition" they bang on about (about 10 yrs...... ) makes me laugh...but the AFL will never change it.
I agree the GrandFinalists of the previous season should play - its a reward for excellence and the game is showcased at the highest skill level possible.

I am thinking that this is a good idea too.na exa wrote:add 1 for me as well.i like that idea, patrick. why not have the grand finalists from the previous season play as an anzac tradition?
thats fair.
The funny thing is that there are 3 games on Anzac Day.
Yet there is one game on the holiday and it is Carlton v Geelong!!
Why isn't anyone complaining about that?
Even though my Dad was a digger in the Second World War, and my brother was in the Air Force, and my nephew was in the Army (which he regarded as the best job of his life), it's only since I've been overseas that the degree of their herosim and thebimportance of their taking risks for their country really sunk in. Both my Dad and my brother were injured in the armed forces, my nephew thankfully was not. I have a few mates in Afghanistan and other war zones now, and frankly, I don't have the personal courage to take those risks. Footy is a poor second cousin of that kind of risk... but I do appreciate that their sacrifice and honor and I'm glad someone is recognizing it, even if it's only in the banner and the pre-game stuff. Good on footy for doing it, I say. Lest we forget.

Dont see any issue with the current sides having the day. If we become a big enough club then we can create our own day. A big club gets crowds however they are performing. We are a fair way off that. As for the suggestion of the previous 2 GF teams playing off. How does that work if Freo play PA in Melbourne and yes the game must be at the G because that is what the day is all about.

I don't have a problem with.
Just as long as both clubs donate ENTIRE takings to the RSL...
They are hijacking horrible memories for financial gain. They - or whoever else uses the day - should pay

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
They have helped the day come back to more prominence. Or as true saints supporters we should give no credit where it is due. Isnt that the saying. I can bet 13 years ago when this game started no one gave 2 hoots about it.Thinline wrote:I don't have a problem with.

The Diggers who fought on the western front and Galipoli, were not gifted anything, they earnt every inch of ground they captured. During WW2 none of the Digger's in Africa, New Guinea, or anywhere else were given victories based on reputation or privilege.
This day imo should not be about the amount of supporters you get in the gate, it should be about earning the privilige of playing on this special day.
The 2 highest finishing Victorian teams should play at the G at 2pm. And the 2 highest finishing interstate clubs play on the night, at the highest placed clubs home ground.
We have a chance to enjoy this day because of the sacrifices made during these conflicts, our freedom was earnt through this sacrifice, to just gift this privilege to 2 rich clubs based on money degrades the Anzac legend IMO...
This privilege must be earn.
