The year of the "mungrels". And I still hate Essendon for that. Fancy calling our innocent boys that  They were such a meek and mild lot  Cost us a possible Premiership in the end, great team.

So it wasn't just my pc...

I'd be interested if we could get a list of players for that year. I tried goggling, but no use.

Colling was Capt'n.
Rex Hunt (final year?)
Sidebottom
George Young.
Muir.
Saurau
Barker
Perovic
Joffa Cunningham
Maurice O'Keefe
Duperouzel
Gellie
Doug Booth
G McDonald
Rob Elliott
Gary Lofts
Phil Stevens
Ian Baker
Dale Evans
Russell Tweedale
Russell Greene
Jeff Dunne
Ian Sartori
Breen
Graeme Bond

Interesting that in the following years, we lost:

Young
Perovic
Greene
Ditterich

And during our mid season slump, we seemed to miss Gellie and Duperouzel.

Apparently gorgeous George was a HFF but injuries forced him to play at FF.

Maybe someone can confirm?

I was at that game at Vic park.

Back in those days, you could get in the rooms after the game.

LOL, the filth fans were rioting outside the door and we couldn't leave for ages.

They demanded blood. :D

Nothing wrong with the pace of that game, way back in '78 (probably the year of my profile pic), for all the "game's change" banter you hear. Loved Perovic, Super Doop was like a rocket. Big Carl was a lunatic. Great footage, unfortunately I was too young to remember much earlier than this, but this is the team I used to love being the only kid in town to fly the flag for!

Yeah, Milton 66, George Young was originally a half forward when he came over from Perth. from a fading memory he had his fair share of injuries, but on his day was a magnificent footballer to watch. Extremely well balanced and a lovely straight kick, probably only a smidge over 6', but played taller. Absolutley ripped Essendon to pieces in a Elimination final at waverly in the early 70s (maybe 72 or 73) retired reasonably early from memory and went back to Perth. Also played Sheffield Shield cricket for WA.

U bloody legend! :D

G Elliot was gone to Melb by that stage I think.

Interesting to see who went missing during the mid year slump....

No Muir
No Callery
Bromberg was gone after RD12
No Duper
O'Dea missed a few also.
Greene gone after Rd14.
Sidey missed 4 of the losses.

That was a decent list of mature bodied players.

Did injuries and suspensions rob us again?

Perovic 6'4" too...not many ruckmen that short these days. The game may have become faster, but it has certainly become taller!

Perovic actually started with St Kilda on a wing before holding down CHB. Pretty sure he also played CHB at Carlscum.

You're right though. Height is the big difference in the modern day footballer compared to yester year.

I think it was 73 elim final.

We talk about core player groups and all that.

Gee we lost some serious talent in those days:

Elliott brothers.

Russ Greene went to Hawks and become an elite CHF and won a few flags.

Perovic to Carlton. Champion CHB. Won a flag or 2.

If only we'd kept that list together.

Pero, Greene, add Barker... the 80's may not have been so dark.

I think CArl left to capt coach Melbourne after that also for a few years.

I was at the g the week before when we kicked our record score v melbourne.

The fallout from the essendon game destroyed our season. I have said it here beofre but if you were around then for that, this is why you have to despise essendon.

Their president got on a chair after the game and labelled the saints "dirty dogs" or something like that. And so it went.

We had a sensational team and should have almost won the flag!!

Just quietly the animal enclosure has become one of those places where everybody who now claims to have stood there it would have taken up half the ground.

For the record I used to stand just near the gap in the stands, in front of where the players and wags used to sit.

 Had noticed that. I'm out of contention...I sat in front of a black and white TV in Portland hoping that Peter Landy would show some footage!

Greene was a running midfielder who ended up as a running half back. Very good player
