A mate of mine had a star players dad as his boss in that era and the mail was that it was a player revolt against Stan and that they thought he was becoming unhinged. He had a temper that would leave the players cold and was becoming a liability. Think of most of your favorite players and a few who left and they mostly had blood on their hands if he is t be believed.
Spider was named as one but certainly not alone, I am still a fan of Stan and appreciate where he got us but it was becoming increasingly disfunctional at Moorabbin.
You have to admire our ability to go from a club with real on and off field issues in the 1990s to a strongly backed powerhouse off and on field. We send players to Collingwood because it will instill some professionalism around the place now. Back in the 1980s that was like a fantasy that had no real chance of ever happening. We were a dumping ground for the big Melbourne teams trash, lambasted by the media and disrespected. Shoes on the other foot for the filth now.

He'd get life membership under this board too, you play 10 years for the club you get life membership.
That's true, but I would like to see the club wait until the player has retired from the game before presenting life membership to someone that will compete against us in seasons to come.
Everett has been a tosspot regarding St Kilda since he left the club but he was polite the night he received life membership.
FWIW I think Stan has an affection for PE (Everett played good footy under him) and he once described him as a leader - you just didn't want other players to follow his lead...
on Stan, rumourmill had it that he also wanted to get rid of a few stars that he believed never stood up in big games... Loewe was the name floated though this has been categorically denied.
The theory with McLaren is odd as that happened back in 94

In 2000-01 Collingwood threw bucketloads of money at him and he stayed with us regardless of our dim prospects. I respect him for that loyalty... sure whatever happened since then happened but the guy truly loved the club once
