Yep that makes sense. Was he told to ignore us or did he back them.Moccha wrote:It was Vozzo continually paying the frees to Collingwood and ignoring any to the Saints. The free kick count for JUST that qrt was Collingwood 11 - St Kilda 3
Now that's a free kick every what 92 odd seconds (if it was 17 minutes in)
Umpiring was shocking, but we won and that's all that counts, but Collingwood do get away with murder, its the only reason why they got the points last week again Melbourne.
Umpiring?

The Dawson one - he was pushed by one Collingwood player into another and pinging for in the back!
How can they pay holding the ball when 5 blokes are on top of you and 3 making sure it doesn't come out?

Looked like he was playing for Collingwood tonight. Geez I wonder how Milne gave a way that free in the last to O'Brien and obviously he has no neck according to Vozzo. Vozzo was very poor tonight.plugger66 wrote:Yep that makes sense. Was pretty poor form letting play continue as Sam was lying on the ground un concious. They let play continue until the ball ended up in the collingwood forward line, right next to where sam was lying
Really thought this was poor umpiring, no concern for the injured player at all.
Thank god they missed the goal (again!!!!!)

I dunno about you guys - but I found this kinda funny;
Was in the first half - Roo was kicking from outside 50, looked like it just made it - Goal umpire called it a goal - field umpire came over and told him "no mate, that was a point"
Not sure on the technicalities of it all - but I didnt think that was their job?

Looked to me like the field ump was trying to say it hit the post, cause O'Brien had given the thing a damn good shake as the ball went throughBroodruff wrote:I dunno about you guys - but I found this kinda funny;

No replay either, funny about that. But what about the start of the game. Players have a go at CJ and free kick paid against Gardiner. Now I'm not sayng that it wasn't there, but it shouldn't have happened. And why is Malthouse allowed to have a go at our players? And so many more, shocking umpiring that made the win sweeter.Broodruff wrote:I dunno about you guys - but I found this kinda funny;

The umpiring was horrible, I wouldn't mind if it wasn't so close for the 1st 3 quarters. If the pies kicked straight it would have cost us the game.
Didak 180 degree spin dive was so obvious to everyone but the ump.
Gardiner at the start protecting a teammate gets penaslised. I know the rules say it is high, but if its to stop the fight it should be let it go. If Gards didn't stop the attack on Jones, who would have? Not the ump, thats for sure.
I wonder if Milnes head had been collected and ko'd, would the free still of been against him? It was dangerous play, he was already on the ground and attacked the ball not the player. Such an injury to Milne could easily result in a suspension. But because he wasnt there is a free against him.
Dawsons one was a complete joke and almost blatant turning a blind eye to the push on him. The motion Dawsons body took after the bump makes it look like a very strange way to push someone in the back.
Milnes tackle on Obrien, Milnes says he went completly round, umpire says "no"
Head high tackles everywhere, also saw a throw.
These are just the parts I remember in my rage.
That rage coupled with an injury to roo, fisher being stretchered off and Hayes' nose. My mind was not in a good place as that match went on.
And to top it off, next week is Freo and we know the history there.
...............
and now i feel better, I love this place.
Go Saints!!!

Terrible umpiring, the one that stuck out the most to me was in the center of the ground a Saints player layed a tackle spun the Collingwood player 1 and a half times with no attempt to get rid of it, when the ball did spill Lenny Grabbed it and was grabbed by 3 Pies players and it was "holding the ball" Shithouse all night.
Wake me up when September ends.

As the umpire was pointing to Wellingham and saying your free for over the shoulder, there was a Pies player right beside him who still had one of our guys by the neck.lurker#134 wrote:Did anyone notice in that free kick before the first bounce that a Collingwood player had TWO Saints players in a headlock before and after Gardy collared Wellingham?

I reckon that game moreso than others would have been a bitch to officiate. Very hard cluster-style in and under battle with two sides just smashing in.
Don't normally sympathise with the white ants, but in this case I do.
Yes Shneids and JOey were a bit stiff, but the 'grab the throat' of Fish at the start was a bit tiggy touchwood too...What goes around.

Just watched the game having got home from work. The start was ridiculous. They all attack our players.....mainly Clint...our guys try to defend.....they get a free. Go figure.
I thought Harry O was terriffic, but how he wasn't pinged for some quite reckless stuff early....who knows.
Then quarter time. Disgraceful. Loved Ross's reply to the question at quarter time........he'd be 'disappointed' and the authorities should act. Eddie will be on his PR offensive already.
What a win though. Winners are grinners.

Davis' hit on Fisher should have resulted in a free kick too. It doesn't matter how the contact came about, and if it was intentional or not, but head high contact is prohibited...
The fact that play continued, and the ball ended up back in Collingwood's forward line 15m from a downed player was shameful, especially as the play should have been stopped at the time of the incident, and a free kick awarded.
It also seemed to me that there is no longer any requirement to dispose of the ball legally when you are tackled. Time and time again the Pies players dropped, flicked and threw the ball out when tackled, but weren't pinged for it. Meanwhile, there were a couple of woeful holding the ball decisions paid against the man on the bottom of a pack of 5 players.
I think it's fine for the AFL/umpires to target particular offenses, and to make the competition aware of their crackdowns on a weekly basis, but they have to keep policing every other (existing) aspect of the game at the same time!

Everyone was focused on Roo... I couldn't see who it was but a taller Collingwood player literally picked him up and slammed him to the ground, almost like a wrestling move.lefty wrote: Also, did anyone see what happened to Armo, around the same time as Roo went down (just shortly after)? Someone clean him up or something?
I reacted pretty strongly at the time but nobody else seemed to see it. It looked at that moment like we may have lost Armo for the whole match but it turned out alright.

Every year the game gets faster which leaves the umpires behind.
The umpiring standards are always a step below the standard of play and speed of the game...
They were bad both ways last night.
However, they seemed to always miss the first free kick in the contest, and then pay the next one. As we were first to the ball alot more than the Pies early on we got burnt. And this also kept Collingwood in the game early.
That said they made plenty of plain old mistakes too.
Very frustrating.

My favourite is when we take a mark, however they elect to pay it as a free kick, so it looks more even in the stats. Also love the play on advantage rule, is that classified as a free kick also, even though we have the ball.
Of course I am one eyed so asked the Essendon supporter sitting behind me what they thought.
"you guys are being screwed" was the response
Not so one eyed after all.

But isnt that why they have 3 umpires. I do agree with you that it would have been hard to umpire, but always seems that one of the 3 gets more involved than the others.Thinline wrote:I reckon that game moreso than others would have been a bitch to officiate. This is the perfect example of what frustrates me about umpiring standards today. Umps do not seem prepared to make the call often enough to reward genuinely good tackles, preferring to wait for the easy call when some poor bastard gets caught at the bottom of a pile of players with the ball trapped under him.AlpineStars wrote:Terrible umpiring, the one that stuck out the most to me was in the center of the ground a Saints player layed a tackle spun the Collingwood player 1 and a half times with no attempt to get rid of it, when the ball did spill Lenny Grabbed it and was grabbed by 3 Pies players and it was "holding the ball" Shithouse all night.
How do umpires believe the ball spills out of a tackle if it's not kicked or handballed, surely that's incorrect disposal and the tackle should be rewarded.
No not really. It can be knocked out in the tackle and if you dont have prior opportunity it must at least look like you are trying to kick or handball.Ghost Like wrote:This is the perfect example of what frustrates me about umpiring standards today. Which, Plugger, must make it a bitch of a rule to officiate...
I suppose the alternative (in this day and age of hard tackling) is a hell of a lot frees and no flow, so best keep it grey I guess.
(flat as a tack, in case you were wondering.)
