Gwilt ?
Serviceable.
Couple of very costly turnovers.
Will he hold his place when Sam and Raph come back?

He easily did enough. Unlucky to slip at one point, but a can't recall any complete howlers. And for the most part he was playing Goodes who was red hot. Thought he was fine. Much more solid and than the Raphmeister.

Made a couple of errors (who doesn't) but overall I was really pleased with his game. Used it better than normal and seems to have more confidence. I reckon Goodes did some great things and obviously is a quality player. Couldn't have seen Sam Fisher doing a better job to be honest. Goodes only had about 15-16 possesions. They were all quality, but he wasn't best on ground imo. Riewoldt was clearly the dominant fwd.
Gwilt looked surer than he normally does and took the game on a bit. He's a beautiful kick as well. For mine will DEFINITELY hold his spot.

Not his best game, in my opinon, but pretty OK
I really think he's gone up a notch from last season though. So his middling game tonight is the equivalent of some of his better ones last year.
I suddenly feel confident in him. And forgiving of the odd lapse -- I really think he's now established himself as better than that.

I like Gwilt, but last night he continued to demonstrate how much of a liability his one-footedness can be in the backline. He tried on one occasion to pass the ball with his right foot and.....oh dear. A couple of other times when he wasn't able to wheel around and use his left foot, he tried look away handpasses and......oh dear again.
If he could just learn to hack the ball a reasonable distance upfield with his wrong foot like other one-footed players do.
I think he's improved in other areas and this is now the main thing holding him back.

It was pretty hard to make a good assessment of any player on that terrible surface. Damn lucky someone wasn't badly injured!

Agree he's a bit one sided but can kick on his right a hell of a lot better than Gilbert.meher baba wrote:I like Gwilt, but last night he continued to demonstrate how much of a liability his one-footedness can be in the backline. As long as he does all the other things well it's not a hanging offence. Many really good players can only go one way

Gwilt will never be a great player. In fact I doubt he'll ever be in our top 16. But he can be a serviceable flanker who can be relied on to hold the opposition's third tall/medium forward and give a bit of drive from defence as well.
If last night was his standard game (and I suspect it was) then he'll probably keep his spot for most of the year. He's not a key player and he's not a hack, just a solid, AFL-ready option.
