interesting stuff re; Tommy Walsh
Heard he has been putting smiles on the faces of our coaches lately - apparently in some match simulation during the week, he took a huge hanger over Kosi - hit the ground running - and nailed a goal, straight thru the middle from around the 60 metre mark!!! Jaws dropped in disbelief and then excitement. Wants the physical stuff - crashing into bodies, throwing big tackles, loving it apparently. It seems the club is now keen for him to be on the main list. He is progressing very quickly, and impressing everyone at the club. Excitement is growing at what we have got hold of.
I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

I will wait untill a coach or player is quoted saying this.

On reflection Greg was talking about his trial last year but suffice to say he has shown some exciting qualities.

From the moment Tommy Walsh appeared on the radar last year he has caused wild excitement. For most of us we'll have to wait for open training, practice matches or NAB Cup games to make a firsthand assessment of his potential. Until that time we'll have to make do with YouTube vision of him playing well in a similar, though quite different, form of football. And we will need to be skeptical of second hand stories of him leaping tall buildings and slotting goals from full back! That is simply am unemotional, logical approach to this topic.
But stuff that! I am rapt we have him and I'm extremely excited by the possibility he could be quite speccccccccccccccccccial. And that's a great thing during a long off season at the end of an ultimately disappointing year.

I look like a superstar at cricket training but rarely put it together out on the pitch (hopefully today will be one of those very rare occasions that the stars align!)

There is no doubt that he has plenty of work to do. Fitness levels need to get up to the elite level. He will need to learn how to read the game and learn how to run ala AFL style. i.e. where to run, etc.
But there is no doubt he has gone past initial expectations. His love of the physical stuff is particularly appealing - he is taking to this game of ours very quickly. The other thing is he has apparently got big hands which is really helping him to master the art of marking an AFL football. And he is a very strong man as well as athletic. So, rest assured he is ticking off all the boxes at the club at the moment.

Reading between the lines of Ross Lyon's recent interviews, it seems to me...
* Yes, they're excited with what they've got in Tommy. Have assigned Danny Sexton as a 1-on-1 coach. This in itself is a huge sign of support.
* They say 4-5 months. Which means April next year. So realistically, if we are going to see Tommy in the red white and black next year, it won't be until after the mid-point of the season.
* The type of player he is. Strong, fast and agile. But as Ross said, an either end player. He made reference of other successful Irish recruits, in Stynes, Kennelly and to a lesser extent, Clarke. All running players with big tanks. Me thinks Tommy's biggest challenge will be aerobic.
* Said he can turn on a 2 cent piece. Combined with his other attributes, and assumed aerobic weakness, it may be a case of finding a specific role for the guy.
* Ross actually said he is just 'hanging on' with the day to day training at the moment! So the guy is hurting but the Club is confident he has the right attitude and commitment to make the grade.
So, no doubt exciting, but I feel if we see him in 2010 it will be a bonus!!
Here's hoping.

Play the big guy Walsh at a centre half forward and put "shorty" Riewoldt on a forward flank as a lead up forward.Quixote wrote: * Said he can turn on a 2 cent piece. Combined with his other attributes, and assumed aerobic weakness, it may be a case of finding a specific role for the guy.

Fingers crossed but geez.....he's feeling the pinch already and AFL is massively aerobically demanding so I hope the kid can get a solid tank into him.....does appear to have the attitude and that IMO is the key.Quixote wrote:

Hard to reach the fitness levels of AFL when you have a full time job!
