But shouldn't we be picking up the best available player, it's all well and good targeting a certain position, but what if they are not very good?TassieJones wrote:are you joking? we picked up what 7? kids last year plus rookies. smith is still young and if he stays injury free may actually play in a flag in the next couple of years unlike a kid we'd pick in the 60's. was widely regarded as the best player in his draft and i am glad we got him.snippa wrote:Surely you jest.....

Has he got sufficient mobility to play as a key position player rather than as a ruckman.
He was drafted by Richmond at pick 16 in the 2004 National Draft, so someone must have rated him once.

Picks in the 60's are speculative whether you go for kids or recycled players
You pick a kid he could be James Hird or he could never play a game
You pick Pattinson / Smith they could blossom at their new club or they could just fall my the wayside / never get over injuries and play out their days at Sandy
Was sceptical at first but I'm warming to Pattinson. 23 is just mature in ruckmans terms and if he happens to come good Ive got a sneaky feeling RL has something in mind for Rhys Stanley in the forward line. Just a hunch
Was surprised Pattinson got delisted. His heir apparent at Richmond Andrew Browne is the biggest unco spud Ive ever seen

Moves his mouth a lot but says nothing
Look, the guy has never really got the best out of anyone, so let's give the kid a chance to blossom under coaching staff that have a clue.

While not a thrilling draft by any means, it's worth noting that the "mature" players picked are still younger than the outs they'll replace (X, McGuire, Ball, Fisher).
We got younger yesterday, so while focusing on the present more than most, we still addressed the future.
From Lyon's presser, it sounds like Pattison isn't brought in to light the world on fire, he's brought in because Stanley is far from ready for the big time. He's got 2 years to make more of himself than an insurance policy for the cost of a late draft pick. As a 23 year old tall, that's not a bad risk/reward pick at 64 in a shallow draft.

They did plenty of homework on Winmar. He wasn't picked because of his name. Our recruiting team is one of the best going around. A decent pick up IMHO, who will play plenty of senior football. Don't forget the rookie draft. We've got our eye on a few who surprisingly missed out this time around. We could, and probably will, still get a couple of good kids in.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!
