Win or Lose?

Post: # 861641Post BackFromUSA »

Out: Ball, Maguire, X. Clarke

In: Jesse Smith (Nth), Adam Pattison (Rich), N. Winmar II (draft pick 30)

Did we lose ground? Gain anything? Status Quo?

if your going to do that then add lovett

lovett replaces ball in the best 22, smith replaces clarke as the exciting injured talent and pattison is the goose of 2010, unless everyone falls down.....

You'd have to think we lost ground there. Ball is a far better player than any of the additions. Jesse Smith is a quality player but he has had even more injury troubles than Xavier Clarke. I don't know much about Pattison, but if he's not good enough for Richmond's list I don't know what he's doing on ours. Do we really need another youngish ruckman with McEvoy and Stanley coming along well?

Posted this on another thread RE Adam

I thought Pattison was a great prospect about 2 years... never really came on though.

IMO our ruck department was a lot weaker than most realised.
Gardiner could disappear just as quickly as he came (IMO will fall away very quickly at some point at some point) King sufficient at best, McEvoy looks promising but has to prove himself, Stanley is raw.

I think the coaching staff had a similar vein of thought
Safe pick IMO.

May not be a great pick up but is not a dud either. Has a lot of up side.

Lovett was missing from the list. I'd have Lovett over Ball any day. We bring in 2 youngsters, 2 recycled players, 2 rookie promotions in Zak and Miles for Ball,X,Maguire,Leigh Fisher,Howard. Smith has a big upside for pick 60 and is fit as far as I know as he has been training at Hawthorn.

Good to see Matt maguire get a lifeline.

We gained Peake too..

Win or lose? Hard to say. If Lovett plays like he can = win.
Ball was pretty average the last several years and on that form can be replaced.

The last two years our recriuting was very good...so we were used to be spoilt.

Dear oh dear we forget so quickly

Everyone forgotten Tommy Walsh??

Yeah hes a raw Irish kid, but he's also the Buddy Franklin of Gaelic footy and (hes on the record saying it) a big reason why RL was comfy giving up Pick 16 for Lovett

..and....we got him for nothing!!!!

Factor him into all the previous equations and I reckon this draft is AOK by me. Smith replaces X as the potential total gun steal if he gets his body right, Winmar is something we need..a great kick, Pattinson is at worst ruck insurance and at best a late bloomer who will allow McEvoy / Stanley to get some footy playing forward rather than getting their bodies smashed in the ruck (think Carlton and Kruezer) . Johnson a gun VFL kid who can play defence with a physique not unlike Goose at the same age

Yup...Im happy

Gained Lovett. A positive, I think. Not sure yet.
Gained anyone else of interest or usefulness. NO. Not really. Maybe WINMAR.
A injury concern from North Melboune, a de-listed almost Ruckman from Richmond, a backman of sorts from Sandringham. Some one from the dockers.
Not a draft to write home about.
A lot about wishing in one hand and shitting in the other and making bets about what hand get full first.
Guess that's what happens when you finish on top of the home and away ladder.
Might as well selected the G-Train for another tilt.
Doesn't matter really. 2010 premiership is still ours. Go and get it.

If he plays like he did this year for Essendon - a HUGE gain

Smith, if injury free, is a very very good pickup

Who was from the Dockers in this draft? We traded for Peake and he may well suprise.

Very weak draft. #32 our first pick.

16# for Lovett - big tick
44# Peake - well???

Int Draft - Tommy Walsh - for nothing - by all accounts we have a gem.

Draft

#32 Nick Winmar - looks promising
#60 - Jesse Smith - potential R1 draft pick if fit.
#64 - Patison - back up

You dont get top picks when you make the grand Final

What in hell does that mean????

Yup
Longwayfromhome wrote:Might as well selected the G-Train for another tilt.
Why? Only one older player Lovett. Peake 25, Smith 22, Patison 23, Winmar 18 all could play for 5-8 years.

Got that right. 2010 is our year.

Break even at best.

That said, beyond Lovett, the 'trade' players are not who we will be relying on for onfield success.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

I think weve done ok.

Ball as he is now IMHO doesnt address our key weakness IMO and thats line breaking run/carry - Lovett does.

We have the capacity in younger guys to play Balls role AND just maybe contribute a little more on the scoreboard for much less than 500k a year.

Winmar has the skills - can he get the tank? at least we dont have to teach a super athlete how to kick?????........I like that.

Smith at 22 - and I know its an IF - BUT IF he gets the body right we are massive winners out of this.

Our time is now.

I would still love to see an alternative 3rd tall or smart crumber. I think the Hawks did OK with Hooper, sure he's trouble but who hasn't got one of those on a list.

Do the coaches have something else in mind? (Nick Davis)? Do the coaches think this area is a weakness? If we can't solve this problem (especially in finals then we will find it hard again).

Nick Heyne, but he very young.

Don't rule out McQualter for the Ball role, he should be ready now, he has got experience and he should start helping out Lenny, Dal, Monty in the mid field.
