That's odd - Jarryd Allen nominates for 2009 national draft

Post: # 859304Post SB10 »

Thought Jarryd retired due to his crippling hip injury? Talks of hip replacements, etc

Could there be a redraft on the cards here........?

Does everyone that was delisted get automatically nominated?

Might explain it.

Players who are delisted go into the national draft for 3 years... I dont know if they have put him down as retired or delisted as it says on our site, delisted due to injury

So, It will be his name being put down, but he wouldnt have done it himself

I don't know whether being delisted automatically gets your name on that ND list - without having all the delistings at hand, there are a few delistings not in that group above

O'Donohue, Playfair, Joel MacDonald (PSD), Robert Shirley, Gilmore, Tom Lee, Cleve Hughes

No Brad Howard, Tunga, etc named on that list either...

Im under the impression that a player would have to nominate for the draft... So very surprising!!

Interesting that Russell Robertson is named after that article this morning in the Age that stated we were looking very closely at Nathan Brown ( http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/rfnews ... 39868.html )

Perhaps we are looking closely at Robbo too due to him being an overage/retired medium forward... :D

From AFL.com:

"Jarryd Allen retired in August because of a chronic hip injury and though he is not looking to play on, it is understood his nomination is related to St Kilda's list management."

This is strange... perhaps we need to re-draft him?? Or as a rookie?? Seems very strange that this would be necessary for him to retire properly off this list...

Anyone know of any potential loop-holes the Saints are trying to find by doing this???

hmmm maybe it has to do with this year salary cap being too close to the limit to pay Allens "injury forced retirement payment" which is half of their final year wages.

Re-draft a player (who will never play) and essentially have one 'dead-spot' on the list?

Would this be a first?

Well if that is close to the mark, there was no way Ball could have signed with us in any case

Unrelated as that "half of the final year wages for retiring due to injury goes into last seasons salary cap not next seasons. I think.....

explanation by manager-
Due to him having a year on his contract and the saints wishing to do the best by him he could NOT retire- had to be delisted- this was mentioned a few weeks ago...

Jarryd Allen (St Kilda), Luke Ball (St Kilda), Eljay Connors (St Kilda), Leigh Fisher (St Kilda), Matt Maguire (St Kilda),

must be almost the biggst group of Saints on the list for a while..

By re-rookieing him, dont we only have to pay a rookie salary?

Like when we rookied Howard?

I wonder who is slightly benefiting from this....

Surely anyone is allowed to retire, whenever they want - especially when there are medical reasons....

Id suggest that paying a rookie is less than half a senior contracts wage due to retirement for medical reasons....

If he is rookied he could be paid his full salary but as a rookie it would not count against the salary cap.

question is, how many rookie spots do we want to use on this type of rookie.... plus the difference is that allen is young enough to be rookied and leigh isn't.

There are 70+ picks in what seems a pretty weak draft. We've got a few open rookie spots. You've got to wonder what kind of quality is going to be around at our last rookie picks.

And if it helps us keep our group of stars together, it's okay by me. If we open up cap space to front-end long-term extensions for our top players, then it could help us in the long run.

If Leigh makes it through the ND and PSD, can't he be taken as a mature rookie?

Yeah he can - we can have up to two of these...

And i have a feeling that Allen is young enough to be counted as a standard rookie - not a mature age one

Clubs can now have 2 mature age rookies who can have any age and played any number of games.

Nominations for the National Draft closed today.

Out of contract players had to nominate by Tuesday last week but players delisted by their clubs at List Lodgement No2 (last Friday) had until today.
