2001 hey... not much thankfully! I remember meeting a tall blonde boy and his extra tall mate at family day..new kids on the block.. got their autographs while everybody else seemed to leave them alone..they were a couple of unknowns but easy access so eh, why not say G'day. Who knew they'd be what they are now - particularly the blonde, whos now arguably the face of the AFL and if not then at least the face of the Saints. As if you can get near them for a signature now!
I remember getting acustomed to Colonial Stadium... me and my friend started chanting the stadium's name 'cause there was certainly nothing to chant about following our team! Ah, sad times.
There was also a little bloke running around in long sleeves with the double 4 on his back. He could snag a goal and light up the game when things were a bit dull. At that stage i might have thought he'd just be another Craig Callaghan or Gavin Mitchell..
Then there was Fraser Gehrig and Aaron Hamill who we had snagged from other teams and finally i thought, we might have picked up a player from an opposing club who wasn't just another reject.

Remember going to the game the weekend that Malcolm Blight got sacked. The saints had been made a mockery of in the press all week. It was time for us supporters to show our support for the club in its time of need. I knew before I left the house that we would loose...went by myself - my 14 yr old was 6 at the time and him and I just went...the rest of the people we usually go with didn't go.
All those hard years make years like this past one all the more enjoyable (except for the last game of course..lol). Arriving at every game expecting to win...knowing that we were better than 50/50 chance of winning. Its great.

Yep. Remember watching Kosi -played so well his first year - won the rising star. Remember that Roo only played 6 or so games and mostly at the end of the year. Mum worked at Toohey's - our sponsor at the time. One of the reps who had a lot to do with the club at the time said to her about kosi - He's great, but word is the other one (ROO) is better. At the time he hadn't played yet. Couldn't believe it. And he was right. Little did we know then what a star ROO would be come. He might have been a number one pick, but that is not always a guarantee.milney044 wrote:2001 hey... not much thankfully! Being sick as a dog, and unable to go to rd 22. Lying on the couch unable to move - the extent of my movement being to tell the girlfriend at the time that "I should have gone" as Hall lined up.
It turning out later my cousin had dropped some silly amount of money on us due to a "good feeling" (which I've always suspected may have actually meant he was getting into the beers pregame) at some silly odds and hearing that he'd spent the whole of his winning shouting beers to friends and randoms afterward...

intersting to note that a Duel Coleman medalist and our current Full forward and half forward and leading goal kicker only scored 7 goals between them in 2001
Fraser got 3
Kosi got 2 in 20 games
and Roo got 2 in 6 games.

Nathan Burke and Stewart Loewe both played their 300th games.
Loewe's game was a good one where we kicked 5 goals to 2 in the last quarter to beat Sydney at Colonial.
Burkey's wasn't as good. We lost to North at Manuka but my mate and I drove up there and saw the game and got to catch up with him after the game.

2001:
Blights last game as coach..Adelaide at Colonial. There was much excitement at the return of Jason Cripps after his horrific injuries..and the debut of our blonde No 1 draft pick
Cripper kicked the first goal of the game and the crowd and players went ballistic..the plyers reaction was used on highlight reels for ages afterwards. Unfortunately we went on to lose by 94 points and Blight was gone..
The euphoria of beating Hawthorn after the siren in Rnd 22 (and for 18 hrs until Sun arvo kicking them out of the finals)...GTs first win as coach. I remember thinking "why arent they selling memberships for next year" as we walked on air out of the ground

only three players who played that year for the Saints are still there for 2010 and one will play for another club
Think you'll need to change that to 2/20 and 20/2
Don't think we made the finals with just 2 wins in 2000... Essendon didn't beat THAT many teams
We drew with West Coast in Round 3.

Actually went to the game with a group of Hawthorn supporters and was sitting in their members area. Barry kicked the winning goal in what was his last game with us. Who knew?saint66au wrote: The euphoria of beating Hawthorn after the siren in Rnd 22 (and for 18 hrs until Sun arvo kicking them out of the finals)...GTs first win as coach. Ah 2002, arguably the last year of our real ordinary years. 5 wins and a draw, although two of those wins were against the Blues which I guess you could call a highlight of the year given how few there were.
As for the draw - I remember Milne kicked a ripper that I was sure to be the sealer.. only to have Wulf run in from point blank range and hit the post! How angry at him i was! Then some young kid had a shot after the siren from vertually the square to score but understanably didn't come close. Some kid by the name of Dal Santo?
2002 was a big year for Milne who made a name for himself as he was our leading goal kicker with a tally of 50 playing as our 175cm full forward for parts of the season! For me, he was an excitement machine in a team that didn't offer much in that respect! He kicked goals from no where and bounced back to his feet in a matter of micro seconds. He earnt himself a spot in the Australian team to play Ireland and was also named our Most Improved. From that year he was and remains to this day my favourite player and it's been an action packed journey watching him throughout his career with a mixture of highs and lows.
2002 I believe was also the real beginning of Riewoldt's career, Matt Maguire played ruck and Aaron Hamill and Fraser Gehrig appeared in the red, white and black.
That does it for 2002 I think!

The team we put out on the ground against Collingwood the week after the Swans draw.
At the time I figured we had about 15% of our salary cap playing, the balance was out injured. Other Clubs have had major injury worries but IMO no ohter team has come close to the quantity of core adn senior players missing since then.
Brereton said on the radio just before teh boiunce that he's been ito teh St Kilda rooms and it looked like an U19 team, not an AFL one.
The comment was that the players had to introduce themselves to each other.

2003 was but a warm up for 2004
what excitement and promise
and early cup/ or couldron
10 straight and all seemed possible-- a preview for 2009 ( little did we know it could get so much better and yet we'd be unfullfilled.
12 remain from the 34 who played for the saints in that magical year- when getting to the big dance was cruelled by a stray boot not making contact

My memories of that year were that we had finally turned the corner and were a real chance of at least playing in a GF but just missed out.
Also remember winning the NAB cup and all the carry on in the media about Lenny and GT not smiling enough.
Also remember the family day the next day...was massive. I remember at one stage the organizer was trying to escort Rooey from one event to another and he was surrounded by hundreds of kids and couldn't walk. I remember the mc saying...can we just at least let him walk to the next event.....lol... I was watching for afar and felt so sorry for him. He was being mobbed....literally.
There was a real feeling that day that maybe our time is coming....we are still waiting....
"At the end of the day, a coach and a fitness adviser doesn't make a good football team, they're not the only ones who got us to two Grand Finals." Lenny Hayes. 27/9/2011.
