If the Cats and Hawks are interested, it augurs well for St Kilda with them hunting our rejects.Teflon wrote:Whisper on BF that Cats/Hawks are keen.
Good luck to him but I doubt he was gonna get back and while his best was very good IMHO he did lack composure kicking wise going fwd (certainly good for the 60m bomb) and IF hes lost that yard of pace many regular VFL watchers say he has...........getting into our backline was gonna be tough. I actually recall the trouble he was having maintaining his spot in our best 22 BEFORE he did his leg.....hed had a lean run for some time.
Its actually in his best interests to leave and I wish him all the best and I also believe the club has done all it can for Matt.
Ofcourse if he is somehow rookied by Saints.........
Welcome back Matt...what were they thinking.....I knew you werent gouing anywhere.......
Please don't raise Zac and Kingy as there is no comparison, unfortunately Goose is not up to it anymore.

Whilst i liked Matty, i didn't think he could cut it more... his form was poor bordering on deplorable well b4 his injury.
RL stooged him IMO in that he pushed him too hard too fast in his initial recovery before he got the 2nd stress injury.
That 2nd injury ended his career... limited him physically moreso. Too much.
I actually like that RL takes the initiative with cleaning deadwood (for us)

Yes I have seen it in "The Age" but I would like to see the announcement with the AFL or AFLPA emblem at the top to be certain we are getting all the facts and to read the text to the player rules.thirty-seven!? wrote:From the Age:ace wrote:There was a rule change on 22 October but as yet I have not found it on the AFL or AFLPA websites.vacuous space wrote:Mature age rookies have to have played zero AFL games, don't they?
It did allow the players to have played an unlimited number of games.
Richmond may do it Graham Polak.
Hawthorn may be attempting it with Mitch Thorp.
I will keep looking for a definitive source.
http://www.theage.com.au/news/rfnews/ba ... 20774.html
also, im sure that i have seen it on the AFL website... will too keep looking, but i know i have seen it on there in print...
Unfortunately AFLPA still only have the March 2009 edition of the player rules on their website.
It does seem that there is nothing preventing Goose being rookied other than his pride and Paul Connors greed.
But I have seen nothing excusing Goose from having to go through the national and pre-season drafts first and still be available in the rookie draft when St kilda picks him.

What I did not like was that they delisted Goose ahead of time.
List Lodgement No1 has to show the rookies being retained and promoted and thus those being discarded.
It also shows the effect of trading in trade week and promotion of rookies.
However it only needed to trim the list down to 38 senior list players and up to 2 veteran players outside the list.
The need to delist players to clear space for national draft picks does not occur until List Lodgement No2 on 13 November.
With the Ball situation unresolved I would have thought the club would hold fire until they knew if he were going to be staying or going.
Pick 80 in this compromised draft is equivalent to pick 120 in a normal draft.
If Ball leaves now pick 80 will probably be the last player taken.
While Steven Baker is eligible to be made a veteran either inside or outside the list I have not seen any announcement of this.
Hopefully it will be made clear after 2PM tomorrow when List Lodgements No1 close.

How many defenders will The Saints pick in the 2024 draft ?
Wow, there is some real emotion in this thread, I guess it just proves how much Goose was/is loved by the supporters.
Last I saw reported, the club had offered Goose a 12 month contract. I hope some of the more emotive posters on here, will be big enough to perhaps retract some of their unfair criticism if it's proven that Matt has lined up something at another club.
It's also very hypocritcal to bring up strength through loyalty, and then proceed to take cheap shots at some currently listed players.

Interesting story in the Sun by Jon Ralph... suggests contrary to what many are thinking (but could still prove to be total BS!): http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/m ... 5792611214
"ST KILDA last night dumped popular defender Matt Maguire, stranding the injury-prone 25-year-old on 99 career games.
Maguire had been led to believe the Saints would offer him a one-year deal especially with veteran full-back Max Hudghton retiring.
But coach Ross Lyon's brutal lack of sentiment at selection has extended to list management, with Maguire now looking for a new home."
Maguire, who has successfully overcome complications from a badly broken leg, is desperate to extend his career.
His manager Paul Connors said yesterday there were sure to be interested suitors in the tall defender.
"Matt Maguire is fit, ready to go, 25 years of age, and is extremely confident that he has a future in AFL football," he said.
"He is a terrific individual. He played a lot of football this year, his recent scans were 100 per cent positive. We would like to think there is a club out there that thinks there is a spot for Matt Maguire."

He does not like St Kilda for some reason.........(apparently our treatment of him at some stage is a part...have heard him pot our media dept )
Always has a bigger dig at us
very evident in Ball (previous articles) and with Goose in this one
Continues a clear trend of bashing St kilda
Treat his articles with that bias noted

Who do we replace him with?
ive said before- Scott Clouston
I believe in RL coaching ability and he can get a lot out of players that others cant, he has a set game plan and is cleaning out those players that are plagued by injury...
Yes Matt was good, but the game has past him.. He's too slow
even if a player isnt the most skilful he makes an honest toiler out of them and makes them try and play their best, i really reckong RL was the mastermind behind the Swans success (although Roos is good too)
So players like, Jones, McQualter, Eddy,Geary, Dawson (all off rookie list) are and will be important to us going forward, he knows the players that are well coached...
Other teams dont realise that each player has a job to do... They know their role
It is sad Maguire is gone, but i am sure there is no role for him
We do have a good backline and if Max couldnt make the GF then Maguire never would... Maguire is a lot slower than Max and hasnt played for practically 2 years, maybe not a good game for 3 and a half

What a poor article that pots 2 players in Raph and Dawson for "moments' in the GF (and I thought Dawson was good overall) purely to link or suggest a level of discontent at St Kilda.
Interesting his only quote = Paul Connors......tells me a bit re his "source".
He even managed to drag out Max Hudgton in amongst that "picture" to somehow add further fuel to the fire that the "saints and Lyon are ruthlessly ripping out the clubs heart"........Hudgton retired FFS.
I guess IF he's quoting Connors and saying Balls walked out...then he probably has. So be it.
Must say I never had much time/respect for Ralph as a journo (usually fairly opinionated with little real credibility......hardly a household football name...) but this muck raking takes him to a new low.
I guess its the "off season" after all.

anyone want to explain why raph and zac were "controversal selections" for the grand final? I have memories of an awesome final quarter against the dogs so very much suprised that raph would have come close to not being selected. The only question was ever going to be, go in short or tall? Two key defenders in raph and zac would have been pencilled in the saturday morning the week before.....
poor poor article. Sounds like the leach is at it....
of course everyone will want goose, the guy is only turning 26 and is coming off a horrific broken leg and complication. Disapointing he got delisted but stop trying to sell s*** as gold mr conners.....
