Max Hudghton can sleep easy now that he has hung up the boots.
MAX Hudghton's job was to hold the fort, and it made him nervous. The butterflies would begin to stir the day before the game and always were fluttering madly in the changeroom as he contemplated which goalkicking monster would be his to try to tame this week. In 13 years, the feeling never abated.
Thanks. I would have missed that. We get the Age as part of the membership deal but all we read is the sports during footy season, and now that its the off season we usually don't even unwrap it.
We should all take note of these wise words from Max, and remember them before we bag out any of the boys:
''AFL footy looks easy from the sidelines,'' he said. ''In the stands you can see the play unfold 10 seconds before. On the ground you've barely got even a split-second.
Great article. How could you not love Max?
Shattered dreams are just opportunities for improvement. Live and learn, fail and try harder. 2011 beckons.
'Mentally, it drains you, not just playing, but getting yourself up, week after week. I'm looking forward to not having the pressure to perform. Life's got its own pressures, but it's nice not to have to think about football pressures. I'm looking forward to not being spoken about and scrutinised.'' End of story.
lesson No: 1 for new recruits in the new AFL
You Will Be Scrutinised And Talked About When YOu enter this strange new world.....
all the Best Max and glad that Role you have taken on is getting smaller every time I read about it

Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly..!!
Thought it was one of the best articles I ever read about a footballer. gave genuine insight into how it felt to play AFL footy, and how he feels to retire.
Great to read that players have their heads switched on okay and that he has set himself up for a life outside footy.
Good luck to ya Max - ripping player, and seems like a genuinely good bloke.
