if during the pre-season he exceeds the internal expectations, than that is where i would expect him to line up.

Haven't had a chance to read the whole thread so apologies if someone else has said this already.

There is a definite similarity between the recruiting patterns of Sydney when Ross Lyon was there, and our patterns now.

Lots of success with recycled players have kept Sydney in the hunt for many years. Tadgh Kennelly played in 2 GF's and a premiership.

Are these Irish guys the x-factor that we need to give us more scoring potency? I hope we see the Irish jig next September on the podium.

remember -impressive though he looks, you cannot tackle in gaelic footy - so he is not busting through tackles, simply running around players who try to spoil, bump, or block.

also check out his hurling skills - he's got a bit of a dirty streak in him - likes to chop at hands (very big no no!) - could be the bit of mongrel we need.
Eh! sorry to disappoint, but the hurling player of the same name who plays for Kilkenny is a different guy and about 5 years older..
yep - you're right
pity - i prefer the mongrel hurling player!

He sounds good, but before we get too excited, let's just see how he adjusts to our game.

Welcome aboard Tommy.

I guess we have every right to get this excited about a rookie, no huge outlay in terms of money or draft pick and he seems to have the talent which means he could become anything, from Dermot McNichol to surpassing Jim Stynes & Tadgh Kennelly...that's what is to get excited about.

To be sure to be sure

Can someone please explain the difference...

International Rookie

V

Rookie

???

I know that a few years back that an International Rookie was not included in the Clubs salary cap, but this was changed a while ago with Irish rookies.

So is their any difference with us signing up Tommy under the International Rookie category, I was just wondering because the papers have stated that we secured Tommy as an International Rookie.

Players who have not been registered aussie rules players in the last 3 years can be PRE-SELECTED as rookies.
The alternative for them is going into the national draft and followed by the rookie draft like an aussie kid.
They would have to come to Australlia on hope.
They could end up anywhere or nowhere plus they may have a work visa issue if they came into Australia claiming to be a tourist and then sort work by going into the draft.

An international rookie can be retained for 3 years.
Up until last Monday an aussie rookie could only be retained as third year rookie if he faced the national draft after 2 years.
They just changed the rule so he does not have to, but may do so if he wishes.

Salary issues and exceptions are the same as for an aussie rookie, genrally rookies don't count against the salary cap.

Mostly correct but St Kilda had 48 players last year consisting of
38 senior players
1 veteran outside the senior list
1 nominated rookie (in place of a 2nd veteran outside the list, and available for selection)- exception allows an extra rookie over the 6 limit
6 normal rookies
2 FORMER NSW scholarship players - exception up to 3 allowed allowed over the 6 limit.
The club also had 4 underage kids on NSW scholarships not included in the 48.
Tommy Walsh will count against the 6 normal rookies limit.

yeah, i'm not sure we'd lose a lot by trying that.

don't mind dempster as a shutdown defender if there is a match-up for him though.

Has he won the Brownlow yet?

If not, then he should be put up for trade for Daniel Kerr.

We have already got him. Pick 49 in the presidential draft.

Cool, and all we had to do was Trade Beazly, Nelson, Costello and pick 56.

What a deal!

I am a bit concerned about his disposal skills and if he can readily adapt from Grid Iron to AFL.

Only if they throw in Rocca to sweeten the deal.

I still like the idea of playing Obama in the backline. That would free up BJ, Fisher, and Gilbo to play as medium lead 3rd tall fowards which we need.

And if any of them are too tall for the medium lead up fwd position, we can always amputate their legs.

Obama would be a quality acquisition however maybe too old to play.

Given his eye for young talent, I believe a scouting role would be more suitable.
