From memory he (Brown) trained with them prior to last year's draft and was then picked up.

I wonder how much notice Club's take of these actions - do you risk drafting a player who doesn't want to play for you. or would Luke Ball be considered a much better player than, say, Brown and you take your chances?

Luke wouldn't take the chance - he could end up anywhere including Port or Freo. It he didn't resign he'd nominate for the PSD and most likely go to Melbourne - which it kinda like ending up in purgatory.

Exactly... in a weak draft an up & coming side will still take him.

Melbourne still have their 2nd round pick as do a number of other clubs before the FILTH.

I'd say that there is a 75% chance at present of Luke being in red, white & black in 2010.

Fair summation.

Saints reneged on another back ender or to Melbourne with their second pick.

It depends on what list lodgement he is delisted on, doesn't it?

Previously, clubs could wait until after the National Draft to try and re-sign a player. Then, when clubs arrived at the list lodgement immediately before the PSD, then they could only have players under contract listed.

It may have changed with all the GC-related changes, but that certainly used to be the way.

I think players out of contract now have the right to enter either draft & 'de-list' themselves to give them two bites at the cherry.

At the end of 2005 he was probably worth that. especially considering the player we all hoped he would become. In retrospect - yes, grossly overpaid, but not sure it was moronic. Hardly under his value though as some have suggested.

So you're saying that Collingwood would tell Luke Ball that they want him, again, and he would believe them

He cant put a price on his head in the National draft can he. So he could end up at another club on an even lower wage.

Don't think you can put a price on yourself in the national draft - so another reason he won't be there as he could find himself playing on minimum $ for Freo

Collingwood traded their first round pick, and the odds of him lasting through to pick 30 vs. being picked up by any club before them are certainly not in his favour.

Can only nominate for the National Draft if he is delisted prior to his contract expiring which is October 31.

If he isn't delisted, he can only nominate for the PSD when his contract expires on October 31.

me thinks, we should hold on to him until October 31....that way he will never end up at the filth!!!

The AFL has set minimum contract amounts for the first few years of drafted players, clubs only have to pay a player more by mutual consent - contract.
If Luke were taken in the national draft, a club could say we only have enough in our salary cap to pay the minimum.
In that circumstance Luke either plays for minimum money or does not play for anyone.
He can only be sure of getting a good salary if he goes into the pre-season draft.

I think Luke has to nominate his salary before entering the PSD.

I believe Ball may have baffled the pies negotiators by using words of more than one syllable.

Luke is a St Kilda listed player.
So long as he is a listed player St Kilda is entitled to continue to negotiate.

If St Kilda delist Luke at or before List Lodgement 2 (13 November) he can nominate for the national draft before 18 November.
After which date Luke can nominate for the pre-season draft.

After 13 November through to 1 December Luke can nominate himself as a listed out of contract player which places him in the pre-season draft.

So it is up to St Kilda if he can go into the national draft.
