AFL Draft 2001 Revisited

Post: # 845223Post Statsman »

That 2001 draft is really coming back to haunt us now. Let's have another crack at it:
  • Pick 2 - Chris Judd (instead of Luke Ball)
  • Pick 5 - Jimmy Bartel (instead of Xavier Clarke)
  • Pick 13 - Nick Dal Santo
  • Pick 21 - Steve Johnson (instead of Matt Maguire)
  • Pick 37 - Leigh Montagna
  • Pick 49 - Dane Swan (instead of Josh Houlihan)
Gee, that's so much easier with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight and 8 years of exposed form.

yes we pick Judd, and he ends up with chronic hamstrings and is no where the player he was for West Coast.
Now thathe plays for the scum, the gloss has come off just like his hair.

If we could travel through time and change the past we would run the risk of changing the present.

Biff Tannen infamously created an alternate 1985 when he travelled back in time and gave his younger self a Sports Almanac. The result was crime and violence and lots of drunk hobos. It was like a whole city full of Collingwood supporters. A scary thought that.

Besides we couldn't fit all those guys into the salary cap.

our pockets were shorter than WCE and Carlton, Judd would have skipped to the blues much sooner when the money bags were help open....

$$$ judd, environmental spokesman for visy, when then they AREN'T price fixing or Pratt lying to a court somewhere or shagging some hooker behind his missus.

Good point. The tear in the space time continuum could have seen Riewoldt grow up to be a binge drinking buffoon and Fevola develop into a model citizen.

Let's get a little perspective. The golden draft of 2001 has hardly turned out what was hoped for. Round 1 is below.

Luke Hodge
Luke Ball ------ traded
Chris Judd
Graham Polak ------ traded
Xavier Clarke ------ traded
Ashley Sampi ------ delisted
David Hale ------- (potentially traded)
Jimmy Bartel
Luke Molan ------- delisted
Sam Power ------- traded
Richard Cole ------- traded & delisted
Brent Reilly
Nick Dal Santo
Ashley Watson ------- delisted
Barry Brooks ------- traded & delisted
Rick Ladson
James Kelly
Shane Harvey ------- traded & delisted
Jason Gram ------- traded

of the 16 players from round 2 only Matt Maguire , Steve Johnson, Lewis Roberts-Thomson and Campbell Brown are at their original clubs and 3 of those have appeared in trade talk this year or previous years. Often when we analyse our drafting we don't put it into context with other clubs.

So what you're saying is that pretty much everybody except Hawthorn, West Coast and Geelong got 2001 completely wrong.

Thanks for the list GeorgeYoung27.

The one I couldn't remember was Luka Molan, so googled him and came up with this...

A good read and shows how short the career of a footballer can be.

You left Judd off the traded list.

How big would our Salary cap need to be.

Lets stop looking at if's and but's and what could have been we can sit here at look at what we could have got but you could do that with just about every trade period every team every year. So think that our team we have now is pretty dam good so who cares about who we could have got.

those players are all excellent individually but who knows if they would be as good if they were all put in the one side?

The Saints got picks 13 (Dal Santo) and Pick 17 (On Traded for Heath Black) from the Swans for Barry Hall.

Picks 2 and and 5 were for finishing 15th and only winning 4 games.

The rest of our picks were just standard order.

useless excercise which could be doen for all clubs.
No use even looking how a team could hav elooked as they my have won more and not picked up others in following years.
