This is still the only Saints game I have never rewatched on replay including 97. I still have not read a paper or watched any tv footy shows or news since the loss. I can't avoid it at work (as some of you know) but I have actually not listened to the radio in the car or house since the final siren.
Pretty difficult given my profession, but I just can't do it...yet. This is the only place I have truly discussed the game.
Just watched the replay...

I don't think I could ever watch a replay of that.
Have never watched 97 past half time , though I did try a few times.
Unfortunately the images of all those missed goals is ingrained forever.
Seeing constant replays of them in my mind is driving me to despair enough without a high resolution replay.
But I would like to see the interview with The Doc.
Was it before the game or at half time ?
(So I can go straight to it without accidentally tormenting myself further).

saw that with Doc and Cowboy. Very emotional stuff. Poor Doc is pretty crook. You cab barely understand him.

He was very emotional himself. At first I asked myself, "is he crying?" and pretty soon I realised he was, but without tears...

I watched a replay of it yesterday as well. Thought long and hard before I did though and being two days later was easier to do.
Second time helps to pick up small things, clarify things and still shake your head at those misses.
Watching again helped me realize how busy Gram was. I knew that he played well but watching it live I suppose I was focussing on our other midfielders.
Feel better for looking at it again oddly enough. No need to watch it again though.

Just can't bring myself to watch it. Have barely looked at newspapers, haven't watched any vision on news, tv, listened to radio - nothing. can't handle it yet. still get emotional every time I think about it.
tell me this. my boyfriend goes for geelong. I told him all I wanted was to not speak to him after the game...and that I would call him when I was ready. He is a huge fairweather supporter - I rekon the only games he has been to in the last 3 years are finals. He doesn't care, but acts like it when finals come around. So i knew if i talked to him it would only piss me off, and I would only say things I would regret later.
But, I have copped it for the last 3 days for 'not being over it yet' and 'not letting him enjoy the win and congratulating him'.
I'm sorry - but I have not been in the mood to hear about what a great night he had on saturday and how brilliant the game was. no thanks.
oh...and his opinion of the game?
'We shut down all of your best players'
'Our backline was much better than yours that's why you couldn't score'
'it was karma for your game against the bulldogs'
'we were a lot more composed than st.kilda all day'
and my personal favourite...
'I thought the saints never had a chance of winning'
apologies for ranting....but needed to tell people that would actually understand the pain im feeling right now!!!

I read on here once, ..."I'll divorce the wife before I switch clubs." and knowing that the Mrs is out at the moment and I'm safe posting it.....something that I know to be true in my case...lol
I have the game recorded but don't think i'll ever bring myself to watch it. When i read some posts on here specifically describing incidents that happened in the last 5 minutes, I honestly can't remember them happening. Maybe the events that unfolded in those last few minutes were so traumatic that i've subconsciously erased them from my memory bank.
Couldn't bring myself to take down all the saints stuff from the office windows at work yesterday. Although it did little to ease the pain, it was nice to have so many people at work -even people that don't really know me that well- just saying 'i'm sorry' when we crossed paths yesterday. Even a cats fan came up and said 'your boys were fantastic. just a great game.'
Feeling better this morning then i was yesterday so maybe I'm ready to move on.
I know my family and some friends think i invest way too much money, time and emotion in St Kilda Football Club but I wouldn't have it any other way. 2009 was a great ride and I'll be saddling up again in 2010.

I watched some of it again just to see what went wrong..not a lot, but three gimme goals we should have had was a major bummer, and some obvious fixes that RL will no doubt fix for 2010. The umpiring was a bit inconsistant, but don't blame the umpires -if you want to win, you win. I thought Lenny let Bartel dictate the terms a bit too much when Bartel shifted onto him and we lost some drive, no doubt Goddard lost some intensity after coming back on with the busted nose and collar bone -more drive lost, NDS needed a big last half but just runs at one pace and will never put his head on the line when it counts. Baker having dispensed of SJ should have gone to Chapman, who got the easiest three goals of his career..Raph is not up to footy at this level though tries hard but wont improve, McQualter will be better as he is still developing, Milne had every chance to crumb numerous spillages in our forward line later in the game but was too easily kept out of the contest -too small, not strong enough -thats why he fails in finals and should be delisted.
I watched it on Sunday morning believe it or not. Gram stood out for me, I knew he had a great game but the replay highlighted how great. Raph looked better on the replay, Gilbo had his least composed game of the year. The missed goals cost us big time. The awesome run down in the dying minutes from Zac to spoil and then Scarlett toe pokes it straight to Ablett was heart breaking. Talk about a lucky break. I've seen that moment over and over in my head every day and night since. If only Scarlett didn't pull it off, we would have won. But in the long run, it should never have been so close in the last quater, we should have kicked goals when we had the opportunity.
Struggling to overcome this flat feeling.
Oh well, 5 months to go and counting. Bring on 2010!

I watched the first 3 quarters on Sunday night.....still haven't watched that last quarter yet though. Mainly did it because as many have said, it gives you clarity away from the passion of the situation. Plus, my "restricted view" seat meant my view of play towards the city end goals was pretty non-existent.
Raph had a nervous start as we all know but I think he got better as the game wore on. I think he would be a solid player if he didn't feel so under pressure all the time, real or imagined.
Anyway I do want to watch that last quarter sometime this week.....

Just watched it on Foxtel, well up to when Chapman kicked that goal.
We should have been 3-4 goals up at halftime, & 3/4 time, missed opportunities cost us.
I know a lot of people are bagging Milne here, but hey he played played better than Varcoe or Johnson did. What Milne did wrong is miss the goals he would normally swallow.
The two set shots we're particularly bad, if he had got that first one, his confidence would have been up. Also thought the 50 metre penalty was harsh seeing the Geelong player sat on him and wouldn't let him up.
There was a similar incident in the third quarter where a Geelong player was pinged and took just as long to give up the ball and no 50m.
As I said, and even more reinforced by watching the game, I would not be looking at trading anybody who played on Saturday, I'd be looking at improving our depth even more and developing our own.
I'd also look to improving Joey's kicking at goal, believe he kicked something like 8 18 for the year, we need him kicking about 20+ for us.
Of course the third marking forward option is vital, if we can get someone who can kick 30+ goals for us on top of Roo, Kosi, Schneider and Milne, we will be a very happy and hungover bunch of supporters 1 year from now.

Except for the sanity nothing much has been lost.
Thanks for the summary. I just can't bear to watch it at the moment and probably won't for at least 5 years! Can't even bear to watch highlights at this point. I taped all the footy shows last night so that I could FFWD the highlights (or lowlights in our case) packages.3rd generation saint wrote:Just watched it on Foxtel, well up to when Chapman kicked that goal.

I agree re-keeping the squad we have. It just needs some fine tuning and tinkering, not a clean out. We have some quality youth coming through and I think we would be better off adding to that and developing our own with a pick up or 2 of some established players at trade week. Ross is great during trade week. Have full faith in him and the rest of the coaching panel.
