Family Day Crowd = LEGENDS !!

Post: # 834546Post Eastern »

I think every one of the 4,000-5,000 who attended should feel very proud of our great club and very proud of themselves. That level of committment from the fans at this time only reinforces my belief that ST KILDA is a fantastic club and our fans are the most passionate in the AFL

The Michael Roberts inspired idea of waving the scarves above your heads as the players came out on stage was a fantastic sight and would have given the players a massive boost. THIS IDEA MUST BE CARRIED INTO THE 2010 SEASON every time the team runs out on to the ground.

All of the players conducted themselves exceptionally well. There were no sunglasses, no alcohol and they all appeared to be very appreciative of the fans who were there supporting them.

Ross, Rooey, Joey, Bally, Lenny, Bally, BJ & Max all spoke exceptionally well and I have no doubts that there is unfinished business amongst this group. All of them thanked the fans for their support today and the season. Max announcing his retirement at this function is testement to how he feels about this club (yes the announcement was a bit sad, but not entirely unexpected).

Today's function has reinforced just how proud I am to BE A SAINT !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

It was good to get there and be amongst other Sainters who are also hurting. The scarf thing worked really well, so I hope that continues next year. Michael Roberts and all the players who spoke were great. Farewell Maxie.

Never been more proud to be a Saints supporter than I was today. No one was accepting or glorifying the loss, we were all there as one to share the pain and be there for our team. Strength and unity during the hard times as well as the good is what makes the St Kilda football club so great.

The players spoke magnificently well today and there was emotion on their faces when they came out and saw the sea of red and white scarves in the crowd. They were truly overwhelmed. I agree that the scarves looked magnificent and is something we do need to carry on next year.

I am one very sad yet proud St Kilda supporter! Bring on 2010!!!

It was really good.
Good to let them know we still support them.
And step 1 to our recovery process.

Just thought we were a touch too generous in our applause.

Just got home from the day...and am so very very glad I went

Terrific turnout and I thought just the right mood was apparent. No-one was congratulating the Club for coming 2nd..we are way past that, but still an enormous amount of respect and thanks shown to the team for the season just gone.

The players spoke superbly..and I agree with Eastern that they looked far from a hungover bunch of sad sacks. No sunglasses (that I saw) and just the odd water bottle swigged on. If they'd had massive night of drowning their sorrows, it sure didnt show.

The scarf display looked great (Ill try and post a pic) but someone needs to tell Michael Roberts that you cant applaud and hold your scarf up at the same time LOL

Loved too being able to say a last "seeya" for the season to many of my Saintsational mates and share a bite of lunch with some of them. To those of you who choose to stay anonymous behind your keyboards on this Forum, that is your right of course, but you really are missing out on meeting some seriously nice people and devoted Sainters. The camerarderie shown by this place over the finals series, especially to our friends visiting from Interstate and overseas, has been just brilliant. No-one ever visit Melbourne alone for a Saints game and feel they'll be lonely..this Forum will see to that

According to the saints facebook there were approximately 9000 people there. A fantastic turnout and Michael Roberts was good as well. Absolutely shattered by Max's decision, but we need to look forward. 2010 can't come quick enough!

Hey would really like to catch up with some of you guys at one stage...do we need to organise a lunch or dinner somewhere? (just a thought!)

No worries Scoop...the last 2 rows of Q51 were great. I was in Seat 16 row MM so anyone here was close to those seats, great to have met you at the game, we gave everything we could!

I went with my niece.....surprised at the crowd.

Only issues were:

1. They should've opened up Level 2, considering the crowd - perhaps hold the function on the other side of the ground so as not to have to use Medallion Club seating.

2. There should've been a pathway down the middle for the players so autograph hunters (cue uncle with a 7 year old!) can line up on two sides a fence not just one.

By the way, the players were excellent in signing autographs - shame the bus had to go at 1.15pm, leaving not quite enough time for signings - another 15 to 20 minutes would've been perfect, but otherwise a top day considering the circumstances.

Loaded up the family wagon and headed down the Newell from the Gold Coast for this weekend. Such a rollercoaster ride, ticketing anxiety, dust storms, rain, 8.30 entry to the G to secure a good position, a fantastic game and day that was ultimately soured by the result.

For my 10 year old son and I today's Family Day was a re-affirmation of all the things we love about this club. Loyalty, passion, a sense of history, real spirit, real people....

Wanted to say thanks to all Saintsationalists for camaraderie, kind help with tickets (Ausfatcat especially), advice and just the general banter associated with being part of the St.Kilda Football Club.

Also wanted to give Michael Roberts a thumbs up. All those that were there early would have seen a very passionate delivery about the virtues of the club and looking forward. Stirring stuff and a real credit to someone that has perhaps sometimes been unfairly maligned (would MR have done Sale of the Century again if he had his time over???).

We'll drive back comforted by the response of the players and coaching staff, inspired by the disappointment, passion and belief evident today and looking forward to next year and keeping in touch with our club through this terrific forum.

it was comforting to be with thousands of others hurting as much as me and to see that the playing group / coaches have gone from greiving to resolution stage already. Also good to see the board members there.

AwayInUSA no longer ... have based myself back in Melbourne for a decade of Saintsational Success (with regular trips back to the USA)

Glad I went too. It gave me confidence for next year. It looks like our leadership group will take that same steely resolve and focus into 2010.
I thought the players and Michael Roberts spoke very well.
It's so true what he said, we should feel proud of our players , but lets not glorify this like we did in the old days.

Sad to see Max go , but congratulations on a great career.

Well said Eastern, and everyone else on this post.
It was exceptional to be there yesterday.

Went along with our whole footy gang, including teenage kids who've been in the gang since birth -- who were beside themselves with excitement at the emotional value they got from autographs, photos and conversations they had with the players.
This is what club spirit is made of.

Thanks to everyone -- especially the players -- for doing it so well.
