The moment we won on Friday the argument was resolved.
However the usual apologists reckoned Rossy was outcoached.
Outcoached the team all the way into a GF

Given that GT looks like one of those baboons with the long nose, can he still comment on coaches who look like monkeys?
Yes it was answered on Friday nite.
All we've heard was that GT coached us to 2 prelims and within one kick of a GF appearance. blah blah blah.
Well, Lyon has coached us to 2 Prelims, won 1 and got us to a GF appearance.
Mind you, if we lose this week, they'll both be deemed failures IMO.

Exchange of the night #1. Flying too high for some....saintsRrising wrote:Why would you want to go backwards????plugger66 wrote:
If we dont win the flag this year should Gt replace Rl as coach?
Lyon has rebuilt the Saints into a very competitive unit that have the ability to challenge for a flag for several years.
Importantly too we have a modern football department that can take on all issues.
For example Drain at present can be already hard at work on possible trades such as Everitt etc...
Under the GT Model...nothing would be done and we would only end up with more dud Gt Trades.

Mini was almost lost to us...
Hamil stood out with his defensive side.....because he had been coached by other than GT.

Fact is Ross Lyon will be considered a failure if he does not (along with the players) win a premiership
Winning isn't everything it's the only thing
I'm not sure reincarnated does know the answer.reincarnated wrote:You and Reincarnated both know the answer so why raise it.SENsaintsational wrote:Was GT outcoached in the last GF he coached St Kilda in?reincarnated wrote:It still will not be resolved until we win the Grand Final. ANybody hear Ross Smith on SEN this afternoon?
Doran interviewed him about the appointment process of Ross Lyon.
It would seem another saintsational 'urban myth' was found to be nothing more than just that - 'urban myth'.
According to Smith, Lyon was always one of the leading candidates, but because the Club didn't want to give the public impression they were 'raiding' the Swans by having 2 of their assistants on the short list they decided to publicise only Longmire.
It had absolutely nothing to do with Walls being his mate.
As far as why he was finally selected, Smith stated the following:-
-He had control of the Swans midfield both during the week and on matchday and as such was much more involved in the actual 'running of the team'. That put him in a premier position to jump from assistant to head coach.
-In the interview process he was cool, calm and logical in his responses, no matter what question they threw at him and no matter how much pressure they put him under.
-In the interview process 'integrity' was a strongpoint in his coaching theory.
-He had a clear vision of the model he wanted to put in place.
Smith also stated that they were left in no doubt that he was the best of a strong list of candidates.
There were other things Smith stated but I'm struggling to remember them all.
ANd BTW, the coaching selection panel consisted of
Ross Smith - Chairman
Ken Sheldon
Robert Walls
Archie Fraser

It depends on who we're believing this week. Walls took credit when it was going better - he stated somewhere that he threw RL's name into the mix. Sheldon when we were flying (see below) and had won nine in a row. Now Ross Smith had RL in his sights from day one - five days before we play in a grand final.

Rod Butterss, president at the time, and Sheldon met for a beer recently, chuckling that it hadn't been a bad idea to throw the Sydney midfield coach into the mix.
If Sheldon hadn't piped up, it might never have happened.
Sheldon, who left the Saints as the board changed over at the end of 2007, did not want to spruik this week.
But it is fact that he was first to prod the others and point them left-field in Lyon's direction.
It is understood several board members had eyes only for the usual suspects on the coaching carousel.
"I was just part of the process. My contribution's minimal,'' Sheldon said.

As for the seemingly varying accounts, I prefer to believe the Chairman Ross Smith, a true Saints legend and clubman.
I also note that the article you are quoting talks of 'the board' and not the Coaching Selection Committee. It may well be that both accounts are actually true?
The Board had their own thoughts on who should be on the short list whereas the Committee (of which Butters was not a member) actually produced the short list.
IIRC Sheldon was not a member of 'the Board'.

All I'm saying is that there are different versions of how it happened and it's up to people to pick the one they like. But just because they like that version won't make it the correct one until the other versions are disproved.
No need to have a sook.
