I haven't read teh last few pages so I don't know if this has been mentioned yet or not?
It would appear woith our victory on Friday night that the 'excuse' given by the previous Board as one of their reasons for 'sacking' GT has been proved.
RL has managed to 'take the next step' and get us into a Grand Final.

Judging from RB's stumbling, bumbling performance OTC, it wasn't so much the on-field results that got GT sacked. RB claimed that, had we won the 06 GF, GT still would have been sacked. I doubt that very much, but it would seem that the old board wanted to restructure the footy department to reflect more successful organisations. They did not want to have one man running the show.Mr Magic wrote:It would appear woith our victory on Friday night that the 'excuse' given by the previous Board as one of their reasons for 'sacking' GT has been proved.
If GT hadn't had such an enormous ego and a problem with authority, he might not have been restructured out of a job. But I think his poor relationship with the board, the AFL and everyone who wasn't a subordinate to him made him difficult to employ. I think he's proven that since his sacking with his inability to hold down a media job.
RL has turned out to be everything we wanted. A man with a vision, but not someone so committed to his way that he's unwilling to change or listen to others. Whether we win or lose on the weekend, there's no doubting that we're a better team now than when RL got here. I think that in itself vindicates the board's decision.
Yeah nah pleasing positive

I'm still trying to figure out how Eade outcoached Lyon on Friday night?
Did he make moves we couldn't counter?
Did he speak better to the players?
Did he speak better to the media?
Did he have a better 'presser'?
Did he manage to close down all our important players enough to win?
Did he give instructions to Brian Lake and others not to give away stupid free kicks and they listened to his instructions?
What exactly did Eade do to outcoach Lyon?
Not saying he did but maybe he got a side that i would think is 4-6 worse than us to be in front with 5 minutes to go.Mr Magic wrote:Should be worth at least another 5-6 pages?SENsaintsational wrote:Nicely put.vacuous space wrote:Judging from RB's stumbling, bumbling performance OTC, it wasn't so much the on-field results that got GT sacked. Easy. I think Gt sould be able to comment on coaches.Mr Magic wrote:BUTplugger66 wrote:Im not getting into this. ive got a GF to watch this week. Well at least you answered. try this then. If we dont win the flag this year should Gt replace Rl as coach?Mr Magic wrote:You think that's enough to do it?plugger66 wrote:Easy. GT wasn't able to take 'the next step', which is why RL was brought in to replace him.
Do you think if we skipped 'the next step' he could then take the ultimate step?
And if he did repace RL, should he still be able to comment on other coaches?
Should GT be able to comment on coaches who have achieved more than he did as coach in a shorter space of time?
Lance or James??

You whole post was well written and well put.vacuous space wrote:

.
But to be fair to RB he did put at the time that the big reason for GT's departure (and yes I am sure there were others such as the inability of GT to work productively with many)was that the Board wanted the club off-field to move forward to a more modern football department structure.
This was not just what the Board had dreamed up..but what had been developed after the Board hired external consultants to examine what would be "Wold's Best Practive" in this regard.
GT stated on his departure that he still believed that the Board was wrong on this and that his (GT's) way was the best way forward.
Time has proven the Board correct.
The parallel too can be drawn with the Ctas. Bomber too had strayed into non-coaching areas. The Geelong Board like St Kilda did a major review and independently cam to conclusions on football department structures that were very similar to the new St Kilda model.
Bomber was very annoyed and did not want to accept it. In the end he did though...and Balme for example was appointed as Football Manager without any reference to Bomber who was just told that Balme had be hired in that role.
By contrast when the St Kilda Board stated that they wanted to hire Drain...GT dug his heals in and refused.
GT should have been sacked then, but instead the Board procrastinated waiting another 12 months.
Match day coaching ws only ever a small part of GT's under performance....and the BIG issue was that he did not want the club to evolve.
GT the control freak was quite probably a good trait in the short-term...but for the long-term growth of the club it was very limiting.

Why would you want to go backwards????plugger66 wrote:

Lyon has rebuilt the Saints into a very competitive unit that have the ability to challenge for a flag for several years.
Importantly too we have a modern football department that can take on all issues.
For example Drain at present can be already hard at work on possible trades such as Everitt etc...
Under the GT Model...nothing would be done and we would only end up with more dud Gt Trades.

How can you possibly guage that, most of them haven't played yet? Maybe they won't be great like some of our former coach's "success stories". I hope not.cowboy18 wrote:Lyon has been crap at getting us good draft choices. Take off your rose-coloured glasses.

Dal was a downill skier under GT...brilliant...but often missing.
Roo was on dimensional...a bloody nice dimension yes....but was lazy defensively who rarely tackled, smothered or chased.
Mini was almost lost to us...
Hamil stood out with his defensive side.....because he had been coached by other than GT.

Lyon has not had lots of very low draft picks to utilise......
But Jones, Eddy, Geary, Zac, McEvoy, Armo, Steven and Stanley all look set for many games...if depth does not keep them out.
Exactly how many AFL level players per year is Lyon meant to produce before some are happy?
That is a goodly number in three years and in particular when he has also traded for Ray, Gardi, Schneider, Dempster and King.
And then add Mini whose career has been rebuilt under Ross.
