What I don't understand is the RL love over GT. It is way too early to make the call that he is miles better.

ATM both have made 2 prelims no more no less. In two weeks time we may be saying something different.

If (god forbid) we lose on Friday then we fall off the stage and miss the finals the next three years and RL is sacked how will they compare then.

I think it is a little harsh to say that we now have a real coach and GT wasn't on he still made two prelims with a very youg side.

Who is too say ifhe was in charge atm we would not be in the same position.
Forget the win/loss/PF argument.

My question is...

Is the club in much better shape now in terms of sustainable success than it was uner the previous regime?? The answer has to be YES.

And apart from the support of the board financially, I' say that RL has made the decisions to hire/recruit tec. And he deserves credit.

Never have I seen this club as stable both on and off the field as they are now. Welcome to professionalism, Saints.
Why does the answer have to be yes. Because you said so. How about you say I think so. I too think we are better now than when GT left but is that to do with our list developing on, a new board and some young kids or just because RL is in the office.

It is impossible to say whether we would have been better with or without GT. My argument is that when he was there I was very hapy with what he was doing and I am equally happy with RL.

It is impossible to say wht would have been and every week these threads go on and on and on and the same name calling goes with it and all of this has sweet FA to do with the OP which was about GT talking about losing a final from 5 goals up which he has never done.

GO Saints.
Mate, once again... I have never denied his legacy. I also believe that what he and Butters began broke down.

Let's forget your agnst towards me for a second...

20-2 record this year.

Meanest defence in the AFL this year (new assistant coach has played a major role in this). Who rectuied him?? Who recruited SOS??

Amazingly low level of soft tissue injuries. Misson, who recruited him?

Dawson, Ray, Schneider... who recruited them?

Milne, who kept him?

Joey's year. Under whom did he blossom?

Are we a more fitter, well drilled, disciplined team this year? You'd better believe it.

Are we more professional in our approach off field? You bet.

Not because I say so, but because it's fact.

Due to the feud between GT and RB, the status quo was simply untennable and would have ripped the club apart IMO.

They started with the greates of intentions, but it all went pear-shape due to their massive egos.

Everyone knows that GT was a control freak, and given that anyone who disagreed with him seemed to be shown the door (ask Daniher and Burkie), I honestly doubt the club would be better off with him today.

Why? Because GT is human and prone to make kistakes like everyone else. His failure to step away and let the board appoint a professional footy department is an indictment on an otherwise good win/loss ratio.

Finally...

Blues were 5 goals up and lost by (I think) 10 points = a 40 point turnaorund. Almost 7 goals.

We were what 13 points ahead and were outscored by 7 goals.

That is a capitulation which ever way you look at it.
If you want to play the gae of who recruited who I will start also. I think you are taing me for a GT lover I am just saying that it is impossible to say what would have happened if he had stayed. Same goes for if we had of got another coach you just never know.

My argument is that atm they have both achieved the same and for a coach who took us from the bottom to two prelims and a third finals series he gets a bloody poor wrap.

I think our capitulation in two finals last year was pretty dramatic as well.

GO Saints.
No, I am not taking youfor a GT lover.

My issue is that despite my objectivity, people like yourself want to play on selective quoting.

At least give me some credit for being objective about this.

That's really frustrating.

BTW, feel free to talk about recruiting under GT...

Brooks, Watts, Ackland, McGough Fiora.

He was gifted BJ, Roo and Kosi. Thanks be to Timmy Watson.

Yes, we were shyte in last years finals. But the op wasn't about RL, it was about GT's comments. Different argument. Nowhere did the op mention that RL was a better coach.

And so endeth the thread......until.......
The day that GT starts to admit his failures and takes responsibility for them... and RB as well.

He made some mistakes, as does anyone. But they way people on here try to dismiss those mistakes is breathtaking. Which is why, I honestly believe, that this thread has go so long.

That and 20 pages of total BS instigated by yours truly. :D
I'm pretty sure when after about round 15 said that he would never of been able to get us to this point because he wouldn't of had Micky G or Kingy and that Lyon was doing a better job than he could he admitted his failures.

You just choose to ignore statements like that and attack eveything else he says.

I hope he is there on the 26th and cheering on with the rest of us.

Go saints.
Um, that's not owning your mistakes when you were coach. That's admitting what is obvious.

Tell me, when did he confess to not having the proper fitness team around him? When he stated that fitness staff are over rated?

How contrite was he when he finall admitted that his appointment was a sham? Not very much.

When has he ever admitted that his half-cocked tirade against the umps was a silly thing to do and caused an unnecessary distraction coming in to a finals campaign?

Read the farking posts before you start taking shots at me. You've decided you want to join in and attack me? Go ahead, mate.

You are wrong, and as some one else would say... that's a lie.

I have clearly agreed with some of his opinions. Even Stevie fricken Wonder can see that.

You obviously can't.
Well according to you all his mistakes are obvious so how can he win. I am not having a go at you. I havn't attacked you I have challenged what you have said just like you have challenged what I have said.

Can you point out were I lied as I think I have only expressed an opinion.
You just choose to ignore statements like that and attack eveything else he says.

Well it sure sounds like you are. I don't care who wins to be honest. I just want a flag. I raise these points for the cabbages who simply cannot accept the shortcomings of the previous regime.

And I really don't care to compare the 2. Different times, different opposition, different fixture etc. No one can say.

Coaching aside... my view is that GT has said some silly things in the media. And I sometimes find it annoying at how pompous he is. I think his comments on Ratten were arrogant.

Fair enough - and it is my opinion that I can comment on GT commenting on coaches.

Lance or James??

There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

.even though you're not paid to do so. 8-)

And as long as you don't disagree with him, because then you are a blatant GT hater. :?

See, that's what really annoys me also... He is paid to make statements and create controversy. Yet, if we debate his comments, we are attacked for being GT haters.

If we agree, then that's ok for some.

Just plain ignorance IMHFO.

We can slag of at Mike, Wallsy and Lane etc... but when it comes to disagreeing with a journo that happens to be our ex coach, then it's sacrosanct.

Grow up ffs.

Once again there is rampant over-use of the quote function on here

This thread will be locked, or posts (past and future) deleted at the discretion of the mods if it continues.

Its amazing that a thread on an ex-Coach has this sort of momentum when we are playing in a Preliminary Final in 3 days..but..each to their own lol....it wouldnt be nearly that long however if a few serial lazy posters stopped just blindly hitting "quote" all the time

Only to you and MB.

And you forget that back in 2004 and 2005 there were plenty of men about as GTrain, Hamill, Banger, Powell, Thommo, Frankie and the like were not boys.

And that your line that Lyon is only benefiting from the players growing older is flawed because Gardi, King, Schneider, Eddy, Zac, Ray and CJ were not at the club when he took over. So the age profile in the team is mainly about Lyon's manipulation of the list rather than any natural aging..

The younger Eddy is currently keeping Dempster out...and the younger Zac is keeping Max out.

Though you may try and deny it...Lyon ha built the current team.

Sure he had handy head-start...but he has given the team a major rebuild both with fresh materials and by renovating the existing cattle.
