How has any of the last 19 pages got anything to do with the OP. Can this thread be locked due to a waste of bandwith because if ou want to read it just look at any other GT/RL thread.

It might be Groundhog Day but it is still relevant discussion.

You are advocating censorship.

I disagree. If it is inside the rules of the forum, of the law and of common decency, it should stay for further contributions.

joffaboy wrote:Most incredible load of revisionism I have ever read.

ITIS A KNOWN FACT THAT WE HAD HUGE SOFT TISSUE INJURY PROBLEMS DURING THE INCOMPETANT RULE OF THOMAS.

I find it incredible that acolytes of the former coach would even begin to try to defend the huge injury toll we had under Thomas.

And to add to this total pile of steaming excretia, you try to attack Mission (self serving my fat arse - there was no a skerrick of fitness data on any of the players FFS  ).
I had a go at listing the soft tissue injuries under GT. They were significant in relation to particular players - especially Harvey and X - but I'm not sure what constitutes "huge" (or "HUGE" as you have tried to yell at me). Would you mind providing some specifics?

As for your comment that there "was not a skerrick of fitness data on any of the players" when Misson got to the club, well - correct me if I'm wrong - but I thought Misson arrived at the club in 2008.

I also know, from my contacts with people at the club, that under GT there were all the usual sorts of tests on fitness - beep tests, timed middle distance runs, people on exercise bikes strapped up to various machines, etc. - and data from these were collected and kept.

So the only conclusion I can reach from what you said above is that Lyon and his team threw them all in the bin at some point during 2007.

But of course this didn't happen. Misson was complaining that the fitness regime wasn't the sort of one he would have set up and was therefore no good. And if you haven't worked in enough organisations to take with a grain of salt comments like "nobody who was here before me had any idea what they are doing so thank god I've arrived, and what a herculean task I have before me to set things right", then you don't know much.

Misson is clearly the sort of guy who likes to make that sort of comment. Doesn't mean he isn't brilliant at what he does, doesn't mean that he is. But I don't have to take it seriously.

I know someone in sports medicine who tells me that Adam Larcom - whom you and others have frequently and anonymously defamed on this forum - is one of the leading lights in his field. They might be wrong, they might be right.

They were just expressing an opinion, as did Misson, as did I, and so have you.

But I'd much rather you didn't shout.........

BTW, if people keep wanting to have a go at me about suggesting in 2008 that we should sack Lyon

- at a time at which he had coached a team which had made the finals in 3 successive seasons to a win/loss record of 16/18 -

THEN

I'm going to resurrect some of what the same people posted last year about our decision not to recruit Cousins.

If you express opinions, you are going to get some things wrong. I'm not ashamed of that, but I also don't keep dragging up the past mistaken comments of others.

I'm extremely thick-skinned, so I don't care what anybody posts about what I say. But I'd be more interested if they would try to refute my current arguments.

Are you suggesting that not recruiting Cousins was a 'mistake'?

And IMHO it's not that you had an opinion to 'sack Lyon' last year which is the problem.
It appears to me ( and I can't/won't speak for anybody else) that there is an unwillingness on behalf of those who historically have not been enamoured with RL to actually give him anything other than 'begrudging' compliments in the mistaken belief that if they were to enthusiastically endorse the job that Lyon's team have done so far it would be 'disloyal to the memory of GT'. You at least accept that you may have been hasty with the call, but there are others who appear to still think that our team is performing in spite of the Coaching panel.

Maybe my opinion on this doesn't accurately reflect the feelings of those I'm referring to, but that's how it comes across to me.

And on the matter of Misson vs GT's fitness advisors, didn't GT replace the fitness advisors 3 times in 3 years? Surely that would point to a problem at the Club in that area?

No, sorry, you've missed the point. What I'm saying is that there are some on here who keep having a go at me for having once said "sack Lyon" who wanted to sack the board after we decided not to go for Cousins. I could bring up what they said, but I choose not to because I think we all make mistakes.

Well I don't think that's me. I'm frequently accused of doing this, but - if I do sometimes seem to throw a bit of mud on the Lyon "idol" that some on here have set up (eg, when I point out that he hasn't achieved any more than GT yet: a situation I hope will be rectified in a few days time) - it's only in response to what I see as inaccurate portrayals of how much better Lyon is that GT: when, IMO, they are both excellent coaches, with Lyon being clearly, but not overwhelmingly, better.
And on the matter of Misson vs GT's fitness advisors, didn't GT replace the fitness advisors 3 times in 3 years? Surely that would point to a problem at the Club in that area
Quite possibly, but was there really such an enormous amount of damage done? Some of our players (Dal and Riewoldt are two that come to mind, with Lenny and Joey not far behind) seem to be among the fittest in the AFL. I recall seeing both Dal and Joey greatly improve their physical condition during the GT era.

I'm not saying that the Lyon-Misson fitness regime isn't far better than what we had under GT: it ought to be, because I'm sure it costs a fair bit more. But was the fitness regime under GT really as much of a disaster as some on here want to make out.

I believe you are fairly close to the club. Do you believe that there were "no fitness records" in GT's time?

From memory aswell, the club spent squilllions re-doing the surface at Moorabbin because the experts believed it was a factor in our injuries.

Can anyone recall when that happened?

RE: GT and his fitness staff.

I can comment with some limited authority.

Mark Smyth, Chris Jones, Mark Cera, Craig Starcevich and Adam Larcom were all during GT's time. Chris Jones probably the longest. And he had Olympic pedigree. Starcevich had Brisbane pedigree. Smyth and Larcom had good reputations and Cera was a boofhead, to be blunt.

Records were kept, but not to the extent that Misson wanted. Records on runs and beep tests were fine, but he wanted and keeps records of injuries, recovery times, extent of soft tissue tears, etc. More detailed information.

GT used to get involved in every facet of the club. Marketing, Training Services, Recruiting....you name it, he wanted to be involved...rightly or wrongly. Too often he spread himself way too thin.

IMO the football department of the club is run much more professionally now. A combination of extra money meaning extra staff and better equipment. More of a focus on professionalism and getting the right people for the right jobs.

I have maintained that GT was the right person in 2001 to rebuild the club and build respect. He was never the man who I thought would take us the next step.

Love him or hate him, GT changed the culture of our club. Nearly single handedly. You could question his performances on field, but this club was a basketcase and he rebuilt it. Some of it through luck, but most of it from being strong and sticking to his beliefs, rightly or wrongly.

The guy deserves respect for that alone. And I don't even like the man.

Ross Lyon is the finisher. He will be our Leigh Matthews, whilst Thomas will be the equivalent of the Walls/Northey rebuilding.

Lyon will go down as one of the best ever......in my future looking opinion.

But I respect everyone's opinion and the right to have that opinion.

The only retort I can see is that he wanted to sack Lyon.

Simply return fire with 'Sack Westaway' and 'We are a certainty to win the 07 flag now that we have a real coach' (amongst many, many other appalling calls) and we find ourselves back at the original discussion. I really have no knowledge on that particular matter other than what I've read/heard.

But I will say that the 'quote' about 'no records' was made quite publicly and I've never seen/heard either GT or any of the aforementioned fitness advisors refute the allegation.

But aren't we saying that it takes a couple of years to turn this sort of thing around?

What would that mean? That around 2008 we'd expect to see some results?
