Interesting rant you posted this morning.

As I have told you in our PM exchanges, I like a good bit of argy bargy in a web forum, and am not the least bit thin-skinned. So carry on the good work.
All I can say is that if you seriously went and watched the replay because you suffer sleepless nights being tormented by internet fools such as myself who dare to speak out against the messiah, then, my friend, you seriously have some issues to deal with IMO.
My only problem is that I have a strong memory of GT being a pretty good coach and of the team playing extremely well under his coaching for most of 2004-06.

When I occasionally watch replays from that era, I see us playing a great brand of football which most opposing teams had enormous trouble combatting: in other words, a bit like the situation now (albeit, a somewhat different brand of football: although the difference in the styles of the two coaches is greatly overrated by many on here. I reckon our 2009 style is far more like our style from 2004-06 than either is like what we played in 2007-08. And I've been watching replays.)

I also remember that the real reason for GT's sacking was not poor performance but because Butterss wasn't professional enough to be able to deal with their personal falling out and, helped by other unprofessional people like Archie "Macbeth" Fraser, Butterss persuaded the Board to sack GT. When the members got a chance to express their view on the matter, they sacked Butterss and many of his fellow board members. (And, in a delightfully ironic touch, Mr Fraser was again a major architect in Butterss's downfall.)

Then I come on here and read endless rants about GT being the worst coach in history, destroyed our club, etc, etc.

When I read this stuff, I decide to jump in and defend the truth as I believe it to be.

Not because I think that GT is or was the "Messiah". I don't. I reckon Lyon, for one, is a better coach as are - among current or recent coaches - Sheedy, Matthews, Malthouse, Williams, Clarkson and - probably - Bomber Thompson (I don't think there's a heap in it between GT and Bomber). I don't rate most of the rest as highly, and I don't really see how anyone seriously can (take Craig, for instance: his performance on Saturday night was woeful IMO. I am sure that GT would have done better in the coach's box, especially after half time).

So there you have it IMO with GT: not the best coach going around, but better than average. Probably won't ever get another coaching gig, because he has made too many enemies around the place. Even his role as a media commentator is in doubt (especially after his comments on tanking today). GT is pompous and feckless, and has brought much of this trouble on himself. But that doesn't mean he was a bad coach.

If I'm obsessed with GT, then I ask why it is that - of the dozens of threads started about GT on here over the past couple of years - I haven't started a single one?

How many have you started, M66? There's this one, for starters.

Gee, I still don't understand which part of my assessment on GT's tenure you don't quite understand?

all fair comments re the above post you made.

I think this is my first, for the record, but I could be wrong.

As far as the threads go... GT is now a journo, and makes comments some realistic, and some silly IMO.

And much like other journos being discussed, we have every right to scrutinise his comments on a forum.

Like I stated, if it's on the wrong forum, then move it. I too am dissapointed that it became a GT v RL thread, but I guess I was naive to think otherwise.

This thread was about his pomposity and not a review about his record as coach.

I simply thought it was a strange call to make given the way we were over run in 05.

I also stated that I agreed with his views on the Buckley/Malthouse deal and asome others.

But sadly, these minor point get lost amongst the hubris.

As stated in my reply, different people look at different things and make their judgement accordingly.

In 2 weeks, either the anti-GT's will be vindicated, or the debate will roll on.

PS: no need for the history lesson on his or RB's sacking... unless you ar privvy to the inner circle. Cheers.

Hey Milton
I simply thought it was a strange call to make given the way we were over run in 05.
Yes, and if we had been 5 - or even perhaps 3 - goals ahead at three-quarter time, I would have been the first to agree with you.

But we weren't: you were trying to compare apples and oranges.

Given that, why you have persisted in going on and on about this issue over a 16 page thread is a mystery greater than that of why anyone ever believed that mutton chop sideburns were a good look!!

Why do you say that? Be objective, go through the thread, check my views on GT (and yes, I am more against than pro), then come back and be objective.

MB has logic and it is acknowledged. The anti-GT mob also argue with logic. That doesn't make either party correct, myself included.

I didn't say anyone was incorrect did I?

I think he has put his case across very well and whilst I am no GT lover myself, I think he is having the edge on you in the argument.

I'm not looking at mobs....only you v MB and he's got your measure at the moment.

Looking forward to seeing if you can produce some John Kennedy fire and brimstone.

Phil?

Um, once again, with respect...

I would have been happy with some short replies and views. And, once again, I respect your right to disagree with me.

I'll give you a prime example as to where I'm coming from...

Let's take the Pies win on the weekend. Undermanned, yet they kept going. Why? I'd say Malthouse had a fair bit to do with it. They stuck it out.

Yes, you can argue that Craig made a few blues, but in the end Collingwood had the right mental attitutde to will themselves over the line.

A capitulation is a capitulation whether you're 5 goals up or 5 goals down.

Does this mean that GT was a bad coach? No it does not. Should accept some accountability for 05? Absolutely.

That's the one thing that probably stops me from reconciling with his tenure... all along, he has hardly ever let his ego admit that he got things wrong. He stands by what he says, and what he does. Which is fine by me, as we all do the same.

But if he does so, then he stands to be judged accordingly. IMO.

I don't know about crying, but this comment of GT's certainly brought tears to my eyes.
Former St Kilda coach Grant Thomas says the current draft system encourages teams to under-perform.

''There is no doubt in anyone's mind bar King Pooh-Bah that there is a problem with sides towards the bottom of the ladder being incentivised with draft choices,'' he said.

''I will go as far to say that the biggest prize outside winning the premiership is coming 16th.''

The focus had to return to it being ''distasteful coming 16th''.

I agree with his comments on the draft system. In fact, I'm on record with agreeing with many of his views.

Now I've tried to respond ina civil tone to your posts. Either you're deaf, blind, or simply too lovestruck to listen.
