Interesting comment by the former on Footy Crappified tonite...

He was wondering how a team who is 5 goals up at 3/4 time, capitulate in such a manner and lose a finals game. And what mindset the coach had instilled in the players.

I'd like to ask him the question re 2005 prelim. :?

Some bloke called Schneider or something did the damage.
I wonder what ever happened to him?

Got beat by 5 goals in 2005 but were not up by 5 at the break.
There is a difference.
One side goes to sleep to allow themselves to be overrun.
In the other case one side can't stay the distance.

It was a 7 goal to 3 point last quarter in 2005, the memory of it still gives me stomach cramps.... that qualifies as a capitulation, and there is little difference really, except obviously slowing the game down and putting numbers behind the ball was not an option for us.

Funnily enough, I reckon they should get rid of Ratten now cos he just aint up to it, but they will probably give him another (wasted) year before sacking him.

With the side we had in back then it still amazes me we were up at three quarter time. Bit harsh on GT or the players in this case.

I think from memory they only had 2 more shots at goal than us in the last quarter.

I think they kicked 7 straight, whilst we kicked 4 points and another 1 or two didn't even register.

Although very, very disappointed that night, I was incredibly proud of how well we did that season, and that night, with the hand we were dealt.

The side doesn't look that bad, does it?

B: Brett Voss, Max Hudghton, Steven Baker
HB: Raphael Clarke, Matt Maguire, Brendon Goddard
C: Leigh Montagna, Luke Ball, Austinn Jones
HF: Stephen Milne, Nick Riewoldt, Nick Dal Santo
F: Andrew Thompson, Fraser Gehrig, Robert Harvey
Foll: Cain Ackland, Stephen Powell, Lenny Hayes
I/C: Brent Guerra, Aaron Fiora, Jason Blake, James Gwilt
Emg: Jason Gram, Nick Stone, Mark McGough
In: Brendon Goddard, Max Hudghton, Matt Maguire, Aaron Fiora
Out: Peckett (hamstring), S. Fisher (foot), Hamill (calf), Ferguson

The weak links were Guerra, with just one touch, a very young Jimmy Gwilt in his third game only had two, Milne blanketed by Crouch with just 4 touches, Powell only had 9 (and 7 tackles). Many others were quiet including Riewoldt, Hayes and Goddard, and having Ackland and Fiora in the side probably didn't help.

13 of those players are still in the squad. (6 of the 7 oldest are retired, with Fiora, Ackland, Guerra moved on.) They were young but it wasn't a side completely lacking in quality.

plugger66 is right.

IF for a prelim final we had Nick Stone as even an emergency, our list fitness wise must have been very, very skinny.

Injury/fitness management.

Say no more!

We very unlucky to be without X, Hamill, Peckett and S. Fisher...

GT certainly had a fair excuse that day.... all the luck just seemed to be with the Swans.

You mean the hand we dealt ourselves with poor list and "training services" management?

The fact that that regime destroyed any chance we had by not getting the team fit enough to run a game out?

The fact that our injury list was appalling with numerous and repeated soft tissue injuries?

Yeah it was a poor hand dealt (by the dealer to himself). Good thing we got rid of the duds running the team and the admin.

A pretty harsh view really.

But, in the end, regardless of what you wrote, it still took a team that had an unchanged lineup for 10 weeks to kick 7 straight in the final quarter to roll us.

Had Geelong not had 4 injuries in the last quarter the week before, we would have come up against a team nearly as depleted as we were instead.

Were you actually at that game?

We were disemboweled... I remember the bay of swines fans in front of me erupting again and again and again till my head began spinning and my knees started to buckle.

The filth only had 3 less scoring shots than us on Sunday... gee they were unlucky.

Worst performance ever by a football side in a final.Embarrassing performance, and that premiership that was on a platter that year needs to be redeemed this year

The Swans were lucky because they managed their players correctly.

We were just plain old "unlucky".

Unlike lucky Ross, the fact that we didn't have all our guns fit and firing on the field, actually exposed unlucky GT's poor decisions. Eh, Rodge?
