I spoke with a relative at the club who was on the bench and who did. It's a story about "personal" sledging, player over-reaction, a careless forearm, the interaction of a player's head with the hard turf (most unusual for Moorabbin at that time of year, July) and tragic consequences. It is not a story about an innocent baby maliciously struck down.

This story seems to get an annual revival, and as often happens, it gets more and more embellished as time goes by.

At the time we were 2nd on the ladder and a win would have sent us to the top. We lost that game and 4 of the next 5, and although we made the finals, we would have to win from 4th position, almost impossible then as there was a real advantage to finishing on top (alas, no more).
I actually have 2 copies of the Footy Record from the game as well as most of that 1972 season including all the Finals.

Why would I make up something like that?

I am a collector, maybe you would like to buy some of memorabilia.

I have definitely got a copy and I can take a pic of it after work and post it if you want.

He almost killed a player, put him into a coma & effectively ruined his life. It's like putting Carl Williams on your board.

O'Dea was lucky he didn't face criminal charges.

The account of the incident on Wiki compares Greening to Robert Harvey - aaaaah the sweet and undeniable irony.
Most judges at Collingwood (including Bob Rose, Harry Collier, people who had been involved in countless premierships) rated Greening as the most gifted player they ever saw. I think Greening was leading/close to the Brownlow at the time he was felled.

4 Dane Swan - your thoughts?
Great Player.

I think you might be hanging a bit much on the guy...3.5 years in the game, with a great start to the '72 season, who could say what he would have continued on to be?

No-one's defending what O'Dea did on the day (dae?), but it's a bit rich for Collingwood fans to point the finger at players another club for thuggery, on or off the field. Have a look at the number of Pies players that feature on Wikipedia's page of ALF PLayer Incidents...let's not speak of criminal charges again, eh?

Hey BB. I am having trouble attaching the pics of the footy record from that game, but if someone can tell how to do it, I will. I have a pic of the cover and a pic of the team list with Greening's name on it. Maybe you can PM me with your email, BB, and I will send it to you.

Don't question the Milan

If you want a modern day comparison, it would be like Steve Baker being instructed by his coach (Jeans had a hand in it) to knock out Joel Selwood behind the play, Selwood goes in a coma, fights for his life & his career is effectively done.

John Greening was probably the most advanced youngster Collingwood had in it's history since Des Fothergill. It was an absolute tragedy.

They'll be calling us a pack of racists next.

Perhaps if they can see past all the weeds, children born of incest and rusted out old cars they could take a look in their own backyards first.

But isn't Swan the dirty dog who set upon some poor bloke with 2 of his mates ?
Sounds a lot worse than what O'Dea did. Do you think that maybe Collingwood supporters are that dumb they can't see the hypocrisy in that?

Hmmmm...or, using that theory, could have been like Luke Sykwalker being assassinated by Princess Leia after Darth Vader chanelled the dark side of the force through Yoda, thus using Jedi mind tricks to persuede her that Luke was Osama Bin Laden.

Yes, it was tragic, I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but you guys have had a good 40 years to think about it, so I guess you'd know better.

Looking forward to the game on Sunday! :D

Just get over it.

It was an ugly incident that no one wishes happened.

It was also 40 years ago.

But as for Dane Swan's civil trial ...

On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Jim O'Dae didn't rush past two people to kick John Greening in the head as he was trying to get up (of course, Greening was unconscious from cracking his head on the pitch, from all accounts), so there's some technical differences.

The Greening-O'Dea incident was horrific and I hope that incidents like that will never occur on a football field EVER AGAIN, ANYWHERE, but let's put some perspective on exactly how long ago it was;

Mick Malthouse was a St Kilda reserves player

Ross Lyon was 3 or 4 years old

Eddie Maguire was 3 or 4 years old

Of the current lists at BOTH St Kilda & Collingwood, NO PLAYER was born at that time

I was 14 years old and my memory of the incident is limited (no, I wasn't at Moorabbin that day).

Time to move on- Re hashing stuff like this, at this time suggests that some might be trying to motivate people who weren't even born at the time !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

Hardly comparable.

O'Dea, no alcohol, a pre mediated instruction from Jeans to fell Greening behind play, whilst unaware of the hit (he didn't have the gumption to strike him with warning) on a sporting field. Greening goes into a coma, is on his death bed for an act commited on a sporting field. Criminal charges were not laid as the St. Kilda FC were told they faced VFL suspension if they didn't act on O'Dea.

Swan. Bouncer leaves his legal control area, tries to instigate physical contact with Swan. No difference to the David Hookes case in that the bouncer leaves his legal control area, instead of getting bashed, he bashes Hookes to death. No criminal charges when the matter goes to court.

Swan not inducted to our HOF.

Today, Mr James, 30, said that as a result of the fight he'd been unable to return to his job, suffers agoraphobia and had a diminished social life.

''It's still my firm belief that if three professional athletes kick a person on the ground beyond the point of losing consciousness, a judge has to see that a lot of lifestyle changes have been (caused),'' Mr James said outside court.

''The assault is something that's stayed with me since and it does not look like something I'll be able to put behind me.''
And this was December 2003... not 1972.

In all honesty, given the details we are hearing about Swan and his cohorts, it beggars belief that a club would keep him on their list in this day and age.

I mean there's stupid mistakes, and kids are kids and all, but from what I'm reading Swan's behaviour was incredibly anti-social and cowardly apart from anything else just plain old blatantly violent.

I would think, given current climate, he'd be doing a short stretch in the clink should it have happened this year.

Didak, Didak/Shaw, Swan...

Welcome to Planet Eddiewood I guess...

You're comparing an off the field incident that was thrown out in the courts of law to a player putting another person in coma, fighting for his life, on a sporting field.

What relevance would me bringing up Milne & Montagna being investigated by the Victoria Police for rape of a female?

None...apart from desperation to try find something that defends the Collingwood Football Club's long list of discressions against the general public. This thread will go for 500 pages if we do.

Do your fellow supporters really need something that happened nearly 40 years ago as motivation to believe your team can get over the line this week, or is there something good about the current team you can highlight?

THE mother of city shooting hero Brendan Keilar said Alan Didak's inaction after a wild ride with the accused killer might have cost her son's life.

And heartbroken Moya Keilar said the Collingwood Football Club yesterday should have punished its star for his night with Hells Angel Christopher Wayne Hudson.

Police have interviewed Didak over being with Hudson on the night when the bikie allegedly fired shots in Campbellfield on June 12.

The Magpie did not report the matter to police.

Six days later, Hudson allegedly shot and killed Mr Keilar and seriously wounded model Kara Douglas and Dutch backpacker Paul De Waard.

Unless you want to get sued Johnny, I suggest you'd better put some solid evidence behind that assertion.
