Collingwood supporters really need to get a life as they are fixated on a king hit that occurred in 1972.

http://www.magpies.net/nick/bb/viewtopi ... sc&start=0

I've never seen a Collingwood player take some one out behind play

I wasn't even born back then but most of those idiot pies supporters think the Saints are scum.

The only thing I want is a Premiership. Is that too much to ask?

It is an interesting argument and if you want to not allow a player into a hall of fame because of one incident then the likes of matthews would never have made any honours board.

cant disagree with that matrix. Footy fans are a pretty unforgiving bunch though and I'm sure we have a few grudges being harboured among our group too. I reckon its wasted energy meself, but hell! let 'em waste it as far as I'm concerned if thats how they feel.

Exactly. Whilst there's nothing to love about the 1972 incident, if we were to tally up the amount of dog acts committed by individuals within teams over the years, who would be on top? More to the point, who would really care? Only someone petty. Should we all hate Richmond because Geoff Raines KO'd Super Doop 30 years ago? Pfffft. Does anyone (apart from me) even remember it?

I was not in australia when the Greening incident occurred but from all the anecdotal evidence I've heard it was not something that we should be proud of. Having said that, every club has its share of low dog acts during the course of their history (it wasn't ALL that long ago that I saw Bazza deliver a cheap punch in the guts to one of the Johnson Bros) There is ABSOLUTELY NO strength to the argument that being on OUR side makes a low dog act any less of a disgrace ...at least to decent fair-minded people.
Its time for the Magpies to either forgive and forget, or just get on with life!

I'm sure the Filth supporters posting about Greening are the same ones defending Dane Swan for kicking & punching a defenceless man.

A somewhat valid point.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'

And 'creaming' themselves on a daily basis over a current player who could arguably be held partially responsible for the death of an innocent bystander in Melbourne CBD.

If the best they can come up with is John Greening, I pity the fools!

Just a lot of jibber jabber.

It was the 2nd game I ever went to and the image is embedded on my brain. It was bad, no doubt about it. However, it was alleged that he had taken concussion in to the game from a car accident that week so he was susceptible to head trauma.

Let's talk about the Nicky Winmar game. How does Leon Davis and crew feel about their lovely supporters?

I read that thread last night...

I lol'd.

Meaningless drivel from some rather ordinary characters.

Meh, who gives a toss, they could say some of the same about us.

I still hate Buddah Hocking for his filthy dogs act on Banger a few years back.

O'Dea's was a dog act, no doubt. Not St K's finest moment by any stretch. But for sweet jesus sake it was nearly forty years ago. Clarkson/Aitken; Bruns/Matthews; Hall/Saker; Lloyd/Sewell (?); that little dweeb who clobbered Dermie in the 89 GF. I mean there's so many acts of blatant thuggery each season that quite frankly for a club to be harping on forty years after is really pathetic. Harden the F*** up, I say.

If they want to live in the past what about what happened to Essendon's Somerville in the 1965 Final against the Pies. It was exactly the same thing that happened to Greening against us.
As for football thugs Leigh Matthews was the worst i've even seen. One of the greatest players of all time he continually crashed his elbow into the face of opposing players who never had the ball and were defenceless targets usually knocking them completely out. Saint coach Alan Jeans had to be restrained from going onto the ground once after Matthews did it to a Saint player in a final plus Barassi as coach of North remarked what a cowardly act it was by Matthews after he did the same thing to Keith Greig also in a final. Brilliant footballer certainly but often a mongrel act when it was not necessary.

All clubs have unsavoury incidents from their pasts. That was just another one in an era where they were commonplace, sadly. The consequences were severe and undeserved for a fine young player, but I doubt that level of consequence was intended.

O'Dea has and will carry that stigma (and we as a club will also) but one dog act in many years of service to our club is not the entirety of it. He is honoured for his long service, not that act.

On the whole it was a sad, tawdry incident; thankfully, one unlikely to be repeated in today's more enlightened times.

There were 30,451 people at Moorabbin that day, but about 50,000 now claim to have seen it. I did not see the incident. I spoke with a relative at the club who was on the bench and who did. It's a story about "personal" sledging, player over-reaction, a careless forearm, the interaction of a player's head with the hard turf (most unusual for Moorabbin at that time of year, July) and tragic consequences. It is not a story about an innocent baby maliciously struck down.

This story seems to get an annual revival, and as often happens, it gets more and more embellished as time goes by.

At the time we were 2nd on the ladder and a win would have sent us to the top. We lost that game and 4 of the next 5, and although we made the finals, we would have to win from 4th position, almost impossible then as there was a real advantage to finishing on top (alas, no more).

Of course the Skunks will bring greening up, they are dumb, ground hog day is a major part of their lives, toothless dimwits masquerading as football supporters .
Every game we play them they will bring it up, let them and then stick it right up'em.
The skunks must go down, the whole of Australia is willing us to do it.

The player who committed the Somerville hit was banished from the club, told to pack his bags & never played for the club again. Jim O'Dea was hailed as a hero & was awarded with inclusion to your HOF.

A slight difference.

Is that still club policy over there? Might be a few missing from (a) your hall of fame, and (b) this weekend's game!

Listen, you cretinous dirty bird...

1 O'Dea played more than one game. He played 167 in fact. Or did you not realise?

2 As awful as the strike behind play was you might as well be wagging your finger at the Moorabbin Oval cricket pitch.

3 The account of the incident on Wiki compares Greening to Robert Harvey - aaaaah the sweet and undeniable irony.

4 Dane Swan - your thoughts?

5 Now bugger off.
