A Pyrrhic victory
Essendon may have just trashed themselves and cost the side a finals berth. Ryder gone for the season, Dempsey and Fletcher in doubt. Basket case that they are, I'd back Freo to hand out a thumping at Subiaco. Who's going to ruck against Sandi? And if Hawthorn beat Richmond next week - hardly a daunting task - they will face off with Essendon in a fight for 8th spot.
Almost every team that has run us to the wire has fallen flat the following week.
Sydney being the exception. You'd have to say they're looking pretty good for the future. Jesse White is a great pickup.
Carlton got thumped by the Bombers the following week but seem to have regained their composure.
Geelong haven't been the same since they met us. Seven outs for them the following week. Two more losses, and three wins by less than a goal. Was it worth it?
Essendon, four outs, a shot at the finals possibly torched, for a gain of bragging rights and their club winning streak record held intact... was it worth it?

"... You want to pose a threat to the opposition in as many ways as you can, both defensively and offensively. We've got a responsibility to explore all those possibilities - and we will."
Yes because they won a game they really shouldn't have
This way they can achieve 3 wins going into the finals instead of 1 or 2 considering who they play where
We might be a good team currently however that gives you no reason to say that other teams shouldnt play well against us as it screws up there year
Stop trying to find ways to make yourself feel better and face the facts - we lost big whoop

1 win has made the other two far more unlikely. It will potentially cost them more than the short-term gain... for what?reincarnated wrote:This way they can achieve 3 wins going into the finals instead of 1 or 2 considering who they play where
You're getting ahead of yourself. If this is what other teams choose to do then bring it on - that's one less competitor when it counts.Stop trying to find ways to make yourself feel better and face the facts - we lost big whoop

Looks to me he's simply highlighting a clear trend, Reinc.
As a Bomber mate of mine mentioned yesterday, St K looked like giants next to Essendon. We have big, mature-bodied, physical side. I'm not surprised that teams are (it seems) a little off colour after the week after playing us.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
Perhaps, but I'm not completely sure.Thinline wrote:Looks to me he's simply highlighting a clear trend, Reinc.

Yes, when we hit we hit HARD - especially Baker, Hayes, Kosi and Co.
But some of those Essendon guys are fkn huge - Bellchambers being one.
They were dishing it up as much as us, don't you worry. Plenty of spite in that game.
'Tis such a pity they copped all the injuries Soft pricks!
BTW - Baker is a NUT this year. Saw it first hand close-up on Sunday, what James Hird described in his article, something like "Steven Baker bearing down upon you and crunching you into the ground, taking all your breath". This is Correct.

Disagree Completly. Sydney's future looks very dull for at least the next 5-8 years. 10 of their best players are over the age of 28. and they arn't inline for any high draft picks anytime soon considering the GC17 and WS18 clubs on the way, taking all the picks. If i could choose to coach any club atm Sydney would be the one i would not even look at

Don't Freo need one more win to lose a pick?InkerSaint wrote:

Dons to beat the Tankers.

Teams have been battered by us. Whether by impact or soft tissue, we have damaged teams. Sydney have had the Lyon impact so they recovered. I can't wait for us to throw the kitchen sink. Hopefully that will be on Sept 26th.
Would be interesting (if not quite accurate but close enough) to see how many Next Week Outs we have caused this year from the previous Rounds game, and how many injuries in general.
Thinking back, quite a few opposition players have gone down.
Teams that I can remember off the top of my head, losing players:
Geelong
North Melbourne
Essendon
Western Bulldogs
Richmond
Fremantle
Pretty sure both Adelaide teams
Did we get a Brisbane player?
The Carlton one is hard b/c of the break
... missed the Melbourne game, Hawthorn there was one yeah?

Can't see the point really of the OP.
We won at all costs.
And as for the outs well, the ins are arguably as good as the players to come out.
Cases in point:
Lloyd
Winderlich
are set to return from injury.
Fletcher will play - only needs to pass a fitness test.
Zaharakis, Hooker, Hocking, Skipworth and Jetta are all chances to come in as well.
So, don't be thinking we'll be up for a flogging this week. We are probably looking a lot better than everyone thinks.

Mate NO ONE f@Rgon rates Jetta - a "fast" draft pick who cant kick....next you'll be telling us Bachar Houli is your secret weapon?
Skipworth??? WTF U serious?
I thought we were bad for hero worshipping but after 1 win you turkeys have taken it to another level...
Lloyds finished (I said Lucas was...and yep hes dusted) - Fletcher HAS to be last year surely....so good luck Tate...down back on your lonesome....and Watson is your Judd.....
1 win from their last 4 game Bombers - and lost games to very very ordinary teams.....you are middle of the road at best and played your GF Sunday.....

Re: A Pyrrhic victory
well they got 4 points and they could have had the same casualty and list and got 0 points. so a win is a win. theyll take it. even saints coach said bombers deserved the 4 points. credit where its due. good luck to em. next.InkerSaint wrote:Essendon may have just trashed themselves and cost the side a finals berth. nope, it's strictly less than 5 wins, so they've already lost it.saintsRrising wrote:Don't Freo need one more win to lose a pick?
