I noticed it at least one other time during the game by a Saints player (can't recall who) and it was not penalised. We were lucky the first time. Correct decision.

Sydney got a number of tiggy high tackle frees in front and we got none, but that's par for the course for home state advantage.

'play it on'

there is a diff
easy to see what dal thought the ump meant
In the umps defence, they use 'Move it on' all time. It's not like it's a once off.

Did the umps hand go on the air to indicate play on? If not, Dal is at fault
correct
and from what i recall the arms didnt go in the air when he called 'move it on'

but ive been thinking about this (can u smell the smoke???)
whats the point of saying 'move it on' anyway??
just call bloody play on if u want the player to get going

Ump should have called play on. Unfortunately he didn't and Dal broke the rule.

Was a stupid situation.

Terrible umpiring both ways all night.

Just for my information - the umpire blew his whistle before calling move it on - should he be blowing his whistle for move it on or only for play on?

There's a lot of tolerance and compassion in some instances, there should've been one here too.
Umpires should call "move it" then "play on".

But then that would require an umpires director with a shred of competency.

Seriously umpires should STFU until they call "PLAY ON"

YTF do umpires have to advise players to move it on in the first place,

THE ONLY CALL THEY SHOULD MAKE IS "PLAY ON"

SERIOUSLY,

Do they make calls advising people to lay a tackle, so and so is free on the fat side kick it to him,

There is no reason for an umpire to give the player a preliminary warning before calling play on, none whatsoever,

just call PLAY ON at the appropriate time,

problem solved

The worst umpiring decision ever was when I out bodied an Old Ivanhoe backman and took a grab ending up in front of him 10m out directly in front and the ump paid in the back against me. That was a disgrace.

I know a Swans fan who's whingeing about the umpiring in the last quarter. I wasn't able to see the game, so don't know either way.

If you can put on your impartial hats for a second, did the umpiring benefit us overall?

100% correct.
Only if you're 100% sure that the umpire didn't say or signal play on. Dal was looking directly at the umpire and if I'm not mistaken he's been playing footy for a few years. If the umpire didn't make a mistake, it was a huge brain fade from Dal.
I just looked at it properly for the first time. I think it was a huge brain fade from Dal

If umpires didn't tell players to move it on, the players would complain they didn't know how long they had. Same with the 5m protected zone around the kicker. Players will try to claim anything 'oh but you didn't tell me I had to get out, umpire'.

I've had instances where I'm umpiring and I'm yelling at a player to get out of the 5m zone and then they claim I didn't yell louder when I pay 15m or 50m (depending on age group). Research says (can't remember tthe source exactly) that players prefer to be coached by the umpires - things like 'knock it out' and 'its out'.

Dal Santo only had to wait another couple of secs. It's harsh, I understand he though the call was to play on. But as an umpire you have to pay them. There are many calls that as umpires you don't want to make. But you have to. Things like swearing and free kicks against runners and trainers (im concerned about the football not about the minor silly things). .

It depends they actually are blowing it to get the players attention. If a player obviously hears move it on they will not blow it but if he cant hear it they do 2-3 sharp blows to get his attention and say move it on and if they dont it is play on pretty much straight away.
