Saints wary of struggling Swans
August 01, 2009
Article from: The Australian
UNBEATEN St Kilda is bracing for a typically torrid battle against a Sydney side determined to give the Saints a dose of their own hard medicine at the SCG tonight.
St Kilda started its 17-match winning streak in round one against the Swans at Etihad Stadium, where it prevailed by 15 points despite having five goals to one kicked against it in the first quarter.
The now notorious Saints defence prevented Sydney from scoring a goal in the two middle quarters.
Recent matches between the Saints and Swans have invariably been low-scoring affairs, with the past seven matches between the two clubs only once producing a team score of more than 100 points.
"You know what you're going to get with the Swans, they're a very professional club and every time we've played them it's been a real battle," St Kilda midfielder Lenny Hayes said.
"I think the thing you know with the Sydney Swans is that whenever you play them you are in a hard contest. They are always in every game, they are a really professional outfit and we expect nothing less on Saturday night."
Entering this weekend's round four points off eighth place, the Swans need to cause a boilover to maintain their finals hopes.
Sydney midfielder Jarrad McVeigh declared that the Swans had no intention of deviating from their usual style of contested football.
"I don't think it's mission impossible, I think we match up well with the Saints," McVeigh said yesterday. "We had a good contest in round one. We started really well in that game and they got on top of us."

No team is a push over IMO.
remember melbourne, essendon and carlton pushed us.
you only need to be 5% of your game to let them in.
the good thing about this side is that if we are 5% off, the are disciplined enough (good coaching) to lift themselves out of the funk.
also another big difference is st kilda of 04 would start off in a blaze and be hunted down in the 4th quarter.
in 09, except for a few games, we look like we are fit enough to run another 30 mins.
that must scare other clubs now late in the season where its difficult to build on core fitness.
still it counts for nought without a flag.

seriously how hard was that?
Guys get a grip on it.
If we lose, then we’re really in trouble.
Sydney has only won 7 games, the last one very unconvincingly against Melbourne!
No Barry Hall, and Michael O’Loughlin not as effective as he used to be.
Travel to Sydney – 1 hour flight - give me a break. And … a small ground.
No, they will win. If not, they’ll be serious questions asked. Why - took their foot off, can’t be bothered, didn’t need to win, getting cocky, etc, etc - none of it being a good excuse.

I thought the last 2 games would be hard and look how that went. I think we've gotten over the hurdle of the Geelong game, subi trip and 6 day break. The team has been managed well during those games so I think the guys should be good going into this game. The SCG will suit our style of play so I think it should be a comfortable win over a Swans team which isn't what it used to be.
