We do need Ball.
It is like Ross says, football is about what you do when you have Ball, what you do when you don't have Ball and what you do when Ball is in dispute.
You want to have Ball and use Ball wisely.

Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

Rumour is, he has been one of the best paid players in the competition, well over half a million.
He is no longer an elite player at St Kilda simply a run of the mill average player.
GIVEN
The salary cap is $7,693,750 for 2009, $7,950,000 for 2010 and $8,212,500 for 2011.
Additional services is $537,00 for 2009, $555,000 for 2010 and $573,000 for 2011.
And minimum player base payment is $62,700 for 2009, $64,700 for 2010, and $66,900 in 2011.
Match payments of 22 players x 22 matches x $2,700 for 2009, $2,800 for 2010 and $2,900 for 2011 = $1,306,800, $1,355,200 and $1,403,600 respectively.
AND Hayes and Baker will be veterans next year.
That means around $6,600,000 base payments and additional services has to be cut between the top 31 players. (Divide by 30 as veterans only count half).
Star players like Riewoldt get considerably more than average.
Ball's base payment should now be under $200,000 around $150,000.
With match payments bringing that to $200,000.
That is having his salary cut by a factor of 3 or if some reports are correct almost 4.
Player Ball and his management can be expected to be very unhappy with the realiity.
BUT it is reality.
How much of the cake would you let him eat?"
Excellent and very balanced assessment Ace - some months ago I ddi a post on Luke Ball, questioning his status as an elite Saint because as much as he is an extremely courageous "under the pack" midfielder, his lack of pace and inability to penetrate with his kicking meant that he could not be regarded to be in the current Saints best 22 lineup.
I was soundly bagged for my heresy by many Saintsational posters, and no doubt will be again for these comments.
Evidence of this view is that McQualter has developed into a better player than Ball, and even Eddy and Geary are now rated ahead of him in the list of St Kilda midlfielders.
It would not surprise me that Luke ball is carrying a chronic injury - not sufficient to prevent him playing, but of a nature, probably OP related, that prevents him from stretching fully to sprint and kick long distances.
If it is not injury related, then the problem is in his head, because unlike his fellow-draftees Hodge and Judd, Luke Ball has gone backward in his development to the elite level.
Either way, the ball is in Luke's court (pardon the pun) and it will be interesting to see if he can come back. If he does, and he forces his way back into this star-studded team, then that will be great for the club and for his supporters. If he doesn't, then it may well be the case that he will be moved on to a new club in 2010.

Saints offer to Luke
ST Kilda midfielder Luke Ball has been offered a new deal with the Saints - but his contract will depend much more on how he performs.
The Saints put forward a new two-year deal within the past month.
Ball, who remains out of the St Kilda side, has a guaranteed contract worth almost $600,000 a season.
The new deal includes a significant pay cut to his base but an opportunity to earn most of his current deal based on performance.

Hmmm can you see him playing a Milne - Schnider role , I think not

Tax on $600,000 is $247,000, which leaves them with a measly $353,000 or just under seven grand a week! I suppose if he was to spend $1000 a day he would be in trouble.matrixcutter wrote:i wonder what the tax is like on 600 grand?
Salary sacrifice? Yep, a fair bit would (should) be going into their super funds which reduces their taxable income and is taxed at 15 cents in the dollar in the fund. But no doubt they will also be investing so as to derive an income between the time they retire from football and when they turn 60 and can access their super (currently for them). Of course, training for a profession after football (like Luke Ball has done) is the most sensible thing a player could do.

As of the 08/09 Financial Year, maximum super contributions for under 50 year olds was $50,000. This has now halved for 09/10, so most of it is still taxed at a higher bracket. Smart investing in property and businesses is what sets up footballers today.perfectionist wrote:Tax on $600,000 is $247,000, which leaves them with a measly $353,000 or just under seven grand a week! We get fed a rumour by some talking head that one of our champs might want to leave.
Next thing our "fans" are blurting... "Well stuff him, if he wants to go - good riddance".
Not a very loyal attitude.
